The original author is Cheng'en Wu. There are two english translations that I am aware of:

1 - Monkey: A Folk Tale of China by Arthur Waley (an abridged version)

2 - Journey to the West by W.J.F. Jenner (a complete translation)

I haven't read either yet so I can't comment on the books, but if you check Amazon they have reviews of both versions and you could decide from there.

its a rather mixed up tale of the monkey king from chinese literature, in the original story, monkey needs to get the large fan the woman holds in order to extinguish the volcanos, so him and his friends can cross. He cant beat her in battle so he transforms into a bee, that she swallows and he kills her from inside in order to get the fan. the stories have been made into a performance, and this is a short story made by the same people.

and to understand what the book's trying to say you have to understand the general religious beliefs in Ancient China, how Taoism and Buddhism mingled etc. that formed the plot of the story.
