I learned this in Tokyo in 1983 directly from Danzaki Tomoaki - not a great "version" in this video, but basics re there to share with other "gaijin" iaido practioners - EnshiroDojo just needs to do this 500, 600 more times and it'll be more fluid, Danzaki sensei told me once you have to do a kata 1,000 times to get it right and it should start to feel OK around the 400 or 500 mark - he was right
Why all the criticism? The technique looks correct (I do MJER) and is confidently performed. A great deal of hard, patient training has gone into this. There is a LOT worse on YouTube.
By all means give advice, but do not show your ignorance by saying that it should be better. It will be. Iaido is a lifetime of study
"scratching your saya" an astute comment, I agree - this takes a lot of practice, most Gaijin do this cause they hold the iaito too hard and stiff - keep thinking that you cut with it, not chop, and your grip will soften up
I have been praticing this style of iaïdo for 5 months now. It is not as easy at it's seems. Zanshin comes in time. Perfection and precision comes with practice. Iaïdo is a difficult art; it takes a lifetime to master. So, please, be easy on the guy. I find him quite good. :-)
@csteuart well there is not always a right and wrong way per se, but in all budo, there must be a sense of purpose- to perform any technique like a robot is to not really perform it at all, and is certainly not to understand it. I think that is what most ppl are getting at here. And if anything, criticism that helps other budoka walk the path is THE budo teaching.
@csteuart, to further the good points made by @draco7694, or help you understand the critique. Keep in mind this is an old tradition. A "Ko Ryu". If practitioners are not somewhat exacting in their practice, they are essentially diluting the art (think of ballet for example). If the transmission of fundamentals does not seek to perpetuate the historical art, there is no point to a ko ryu. One may just as well make up one's own budo.
No Artist should be bringing any other Artist down,But more like they have here they are providing constructive critism in hope theyre guidence helps someone to progress and maintain the culture.
Sorry but your iaido has no meaning. It is "Flat line" iai.
But keep practising. Koryu iaido has heart and passion, and you must show intention through seme and zanshin. This will improve as you practice. I am asuming that you are from aikido and just 'doing' iai.
zanshin mainly . good work but its mainly the timing you want to make it slightly faster to make your cuts but after you have finished that kariosh cut slow down no need to rush zanshi will make it alot smoother good work oh as well when your changing feet your steping in to have a good look keep that timing there will look slightly better =) gd word
Often in Muso Shinden ryu the palm of the hand touches the forehead just before chiburi to ensure you don't cut your own head (I happen to know people who have cut themselves this way). There are different versions of these kata, though...
The technique is there, and it seems solid...but there is no spirit. No intent in the movements. It seems like he is just going through the motions, like a player piano plinking out Beethoven.
I thought the same thing. To me what sets it off his the fact that his Gi is almost wide open and his noto seems alittle flaky. I know I have no expierence in this art nor I had any training but to me it seemed like that really wasnt noto or the Kneeling wasnt with the right timing.
you need to get a new Gi i think -_- good job though :)

Get a iaidogi not a judogi, you will look more elegant while doing Iai

Junto is missing

@msalazarx Junto is usually omitted in any embu since the bunkai for junto / kaishakuin is non-combat and rather poignant.

why are all martial artist so critical of others? Doesn't that attitude fly in the face of Budo teachings?

Keep up the practice :-)

Looks very robotic to me. Each of the individual movements are there but too broken up. Needs to be much smoother.

That didn't look too good... Almost like different ryu.
