  • I love Annie Lennox. But this original version is better. Most if not all originals are always better.

  • @JONNOG88 The "originals have to be better, because they were recorded first" mentality. Think for yourself.

    Lennox kills this song.

  • Great song. I didn't know there was a version before Annie Lennox!

  • Thank you so much for putting this on. Loved it when it came out. Should have been No.1. Fantastic singer , haunting melody. Bought this as a 12". Haven't heard it in ages. Kids nowadays may have all the gadgets, and unlimited access to evrything. But they miss the emotion, the raw power . TOTP xmas was a great example with what's gone wrong with music. Give me the 80's anyday.

  • Good, but nothing compared to Annie's rendition. I know people have an obsession with the original being the best, but Annie's has to be god knows how many times more beautiful. :)

  • @TheBenedictStone Exactly. I hate the "it was out first" mentality.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE....Haunting & beautiful! I used to listen to this album before I fell asleep at night. His voice is mesmerising [and even better with headphones on.] Thanks so much for downloading all of these... I no longer have equipment to play any of my cassette tapes. :(

This is 100 million times better than the Annie Lennox version. To me there is no comparison.

    xx

  • much better version than annie lennox

  • NICE SONG!! NICE BASS LINE,GUITAR EFFECTS AND DRUM BEAT..... :D

  • This is a good version. I think Annie's is probably better though.

  • I keep coming back to this song. There was a video of it which was so brilliant but i can't find it. This song is so haunting it's agony to listen to. BRILLIANT.

Changes are shifting me outside the world.... excellent

  • Heartbreakingly beautiful. A revelation. Thank you envioustime.

  • This truely is the best "lost" love song ever.

  • drums beat ruins the song

  • If darkness was able to speak, it's voice would sound like this. Simply beautiful.

  • @Mr40mill you're most welcome - thanks :)

  • A fantastic song and one that Annie Lennox should have been kept way from with a rusty pitch fork...!!.

  • @yeovil50 this made me laugh out loud!!!

  • @envioustime Thanks....my time on this mortl coil has been worth it then:)...Does this count as my 15 minutes of fame? :)

  • @yeovil50 Well, I'll never forget this comment each time I listen to the song - could be a long 15 mins.... :)

  • @envioustime Oh no don't please 15 minutes of fame is enough for me, I have work an no time for fame and adulation:)..erase the " rusty pitch fork" remark from your memory forthwith:)

  • @yeovil50 sorry but the image of a crazed, rusty pitch fork wielding maniac is now indelibly etched in my mind's eye thanks to the (now) famous Yeovil50 (I'm not inferring that YOU are that maniac btw.....but then again....) ;-p

  • @envioustime I would be more than happy to deliver my rusty, ever sharpened pitch fork to Ms Lennox as long as she is never allowed near this song or anymore of this ilk ever again.

  • @yeovil50 I think she should be afraid....very afraid.....lol

  • I think that I gonna be burned for everybody rigth here, but I preffer the Annie´s version is darker than this one

  • @marquinhodub you're right - you need to be burned at the stake!!! lol

  • The CD is very rare - the going rate is £50-£70 at the moment, and that's if you can even find a dealer who has it.

  • @paullavan2011 my original copy is sacred and I don't think any price could tempt me to ever part with it!!!

  • this is absolutely incredible in every way!

  • @sleeping2dr3am totally agree - just an amazing song!!

  • I agree, Annie Lennox's version lack's the emotion and conviction of this original version. Its a song I've remembered from my youth and brings back so many memories of my black spiky hair, winkle pickers and upvc trousers. So grateful for the invention of You tube so I can listen to it again.

  • @PaganMam Fantastic - So glad you've enjoyed my post :)

  • This is the original and by far the best version!! Have it on vinyl that i bought right after it came out. Love Annie Lennox but her version makes my ears bleed! Can't believe she changed the lyrics, did she not have the liner notes or was she remembering the song from a drug addled memory?

  • @lunabird444 I like Annie but I have to agree that she murdered this amazing song!!

  • I had NO IDEA that Annie Lennox's version of this song was a remake till about 2 weeks ago thanks to internet radio. With all due respect to Annie, she's a total original with a golden voice. I gotta say that I totally love this version better. I can't believe I'm just hearing it now!! My plan is to track down that CD and get a copy of my own if possible. Thanks so much for the post. This is one I really appreciate a lot.

  • @jsbx5 couldn't have it said it any better myself

  • @jsbx5 You're very welcome - so glad this song has brought so many people so much pleasure :)

  • Makes me think of Jacques Lacan

  • apsilanify is a f uckwit

  • I loved this song from day 1..

....Anne also did a great cover but nothing beats the original

  • ...one of my favorite albums of all time.

  • Amazing tune!! It’s a shame these guys got screwed over. They should have gone way farther.

Slightly OT, but am I the only one who finds that photo scary as all hell? I’m aware it was on the album cover.

  • both versions are excellent, more emotion in this version for me, annies video to this distracted from the meaning of the song, just mho :)

  • @johnmcgrath6827a i agree the video for Annie's version really took away attention from the song

  • It can't be Harriet Wheeler in background, can it? I am too lazy to google it.....but it really sounds like it could be her.

  • @Coedroac I believe it was June Miles-Kingston that did the backing vocals

  • Nicki Minaj

  • Who the heck played guitar on this track? So amazing. This song reminds me much of Cocteau Twins/4AD music from this period. Highly overlooked band...

  • I love Annies for its big production and melody, but this is far more haunting and I now can see the true meaning & intent of the song, pure agony....im sure almost everyone has been there....its now my favorite

  • 1 dislike, from Annie Lennox!

  • @Kokoots Why the hell would annie dislike? If it were not for this band she would have never had the song to sing! LOL

  • @Kokoots lol maybe it is!!

  • this song scared all the other 80s pop artis back then...this song is way too powerful! it really hunts you in a way that cannot be explained, but only understood, I guess you really gotta hear it when ur heart just got broken. or not, but it really has a hunting melody and is one in a billion songs of the 20th century

  • @hunterallen48 My thoughts exactly. I bought the Medusa album because of this song, but I got to agree with you 100%.

  • Sorry Annie this is by far the best

  • @monoorchid You are so right! I wish that I could get this on itunes, but no can do. Any suggestions?

  • Love Annie and This one:)

  • what a beautiful song

    amazing lyrics

  • your love, your love (yeah)

  • why did the video for this disappear from my favs? WMG again!!??Fckrs

  • Best by far ,sorry Annie your version is near perfect but this is

  • I always liked the song but I never believed Annie Lennox's passion This writer singer version has it all

  • Both versions are nice, but I prefer this to Annie's.

  • great voice wonderful rendition of his song Annies version what can I say crass comes to mind still we will see David Freeman is on his way back with 3 great new tracks he's currently working on

  • He's done some good song writing, I remember and still like the stuff he did the flies.... molotov cocktail (when he was a lunatic I guess)

  • Phenomenal song. One of my favorites. Love it. The Annie Lennox version is great too but this is better. Unique lyrics and sound. Awesome. Should have been a bigger hit but who really cares? I know it and love it regardless.

  • LOL, funny, I remember looking this up standard finding this version first. I looked it up couple years ago. Back when it had only about 1000 views. Now it has a ton of views because Nikki Minaj did something with this song which made everyone look up the Annie Lennox version which made everyone look this up. The power of the internet, maybe this version would've stood a chance had the internet existed once upon a time in the way it exists today.

  • annie lennox scared me lol..i like this one better

  • Annie Lenox version is much better than original, she caries a lot of emotion

  • xxx fanx xxx - this song is awesome & i've loved it since the very 1st time i heard it back in the mid 80's, way before annie lennox ruined it, but i respect her for giving this brilliant tune another outing into the charts, but this original is way more - WAY MORE fantastic.!.!.!.!

  • At first when I heard this (original) version, It was Off putting compared to the version I heard first (Annie Lennox). But after a couple more times I realized that I really like the passion he puts into the song. So now I really like this original version. I know It was written by one of those guys from the Eurythimics.

  • @RobRobertTheMusicMan it wasn't.....the guy who wrote it is singing this version....they supported Eurythmiscs and he went on to produce the covers album(I think) and thats why the cover of this song is there...Annie should NEVER have touched this song as she cannot give it the heart felt sorrow it deserves...her version is TWEE at best, bouncy and gleefull to a screeming fault to anyone who can relate to the actual lyric she is singing(is she so unaware of the words she is actually singing)

  • @WillCrazie You're right. I went back to see where I messed up. And The notes said that The Lover Speaks sent a demo of this song to Dave Stewart. I was reading the sleeve book wrong. My mistake.

  • @RobRobertTheMusicMan no worries :)

  • Aww so lovely

  • I think the cover in 1995 did the 'duby duby do do do' vocal backing far better.

This is good though, totally different.

  • @oliverscott2007

Hello again. 2 days on I have had a change of heart. This version is just better in every conceivable way. He sings from the heart while the lady who covered it just acts rather silly.

  • @oliverscott2007 so glad you came to this conclusion :) Hope you don't change your mind again though!!

  • @envioustime

I doubt I will. I can't even listen to that cover anymore after listening top this a couple of times. Its just inferior.

  • @oliverscott2007 I know what you mean, Annie's version makes me cringe actually

  • @envioustime Why?!? she took this mediocre piece of trash and made it into something of her own. This sounds like a half ass cure whileeee annie's sounds like pop gold (pop gold is rare and virtually no existent in the last 10 years)

  • @rwk1983 this isnt mediocre, and as the song writer im sure annie has alot of respect for the artist, u piece of trash. get some respect for the craft and not just for commercial shit.

  • @caseycass Amen!!!

  • @rwk1983 Well, that's just your opinion. If Annie shared your opinion, she wouldn't have gone near this song. I like both versions; it was strange but pleasantly surprising to hear this romantic 80s version years after becoming familiar with Annie's reworking of it.

  • @rwk1983 Pop Gold...rare? LMAO!!!! Any commercial radio trash (pop gold) can be found under any manhole cover...with no shortage of listeners!

  • I've been listening to the Annie Lennox version since she released it fifteen years ago, and although I knew it was a cover song, I'd never heard the original until yesterday. Now that I've heard The Lover Speaks' version, I can't get it out of my head. I have fallen in love with this amazing song all over again.

  • So this is where Nicki Minaj got it from .

  • @memyselfandi2311 Annie Lennox covered this song. Nick Minaj samples Annie Lennox's cover

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for posting this original 1986 classic - play Annie Lennox all the time, but had never heard this overlooked 80s track.. DAVEDJ

  • annies is better end of

  • I love and respect Annie Lennox, but this song belongs to the singer, not the cover. She should never have recorded it her version is less passionate. This original versions makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I agree that Annie's version was no more than a statement, while this is the real thing.

  • Both versions are good--this and Annie Lennox's, that is. I can't imagine that Minaj cow would make this sound good.

  • I can't believe that I had never heard this song before. I am very familiar with Annie Lennox's 1995 version. This is so much better!

  • I love his soulful voice. His voice seems to ache while Annie's voice is more of a declaration. Both are very good but right now, this, the original, is becoming my favorite.

  • @Civatate0 you've summed it up so perfectly and succinctly

  • @envioustime I totally agree!

  • @Civatate0 agreed, perfect summary

  • @Civatate0 great summary

  • Lovely.

It's not really fair to compare this to the cover by Annie Lennox. I love her version for the more sensitive arrangement. Frankly, her vocals are way superior but then again, she's got such an incredible voice and polish isn't the point, is it?

I love this as it's such a good reminder of music in '86 - I was 17 back then, blimey - and it's just got a beautiful charm of its own. A big shame this group didn't have more success imo.

  • This is where Your Love came from?!

    This?!

It's so much more pleasant, I like this AND your love. Dunno bout annie's though.

  • oh yes, it's really great, so much better! X

  • The original and BEST!

  • @Warnersistah my dear this is the original

  • i prefer the annie lennox version, but probably because i heard that version first and this version is fast catching up and maybe overtaking aniie lennox's version.

i had no idea annie's was a cover, so what a great find! love this guy's voice.

  • What movie had this song? I swear Ive heard it in a movie and its killing me not being able to remember.

  • @DorrianX Unless someone knows any different I'm pretty sure it never featured in a movie.

  • @DorrianX holy shit i think i do know the movie ! bit i fot the name if i'm not mistaking is a 80s movie mad it was like almost one of those rmanic comedies or the early teen age movies. if i see it or if you see it let me know

  • @hunterallen48 yup for some reason the movie Legend stuck out in my head w/tom cruise but dont think thats it. 80s teen/romantic movie seems more like it DAM IT i cant remeber.... Its not the whole song either its just the CHORUS thats sticking out in my mind. I know theres another version of the song and if u hear it maybe you will remeber ? its the Annie Lennox version No More I Love Yous

  • good voice, dumb idea, good production, doesn't even come close ...

  • @dybbuk4640 not sure I understand your comment lol

  • Absolute classic....can't help agreeing that Annie Lennox destroyed it

  • sounds like Bowie.

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best albums ever released..........Listen and feel

  • @Bigwheelneil absolutely!

  • I finally found this song....picked up an album on Amazon entitled "Time Life's Another Lost Decade: Hard-To-Find Hits." Had some damn good obscure songs on it like this and Hipsway's "Honeythief." The problem with Lennox's version is that she did too much over with trying to make it sound classical. This version definitely rocks.

  • @Vampiro712 wow thanks, I'm going to check that out

  • Wow! First time I've heard this. Didn't know Annie's version was a cover or remake.

  • I was young when this song was out and if it was not for annie lennoxs medusa album i would not have found such great originals.

No more I love yous - Lover Speaks

Downtown lights - The Blue Nile

Waiting in vain - Bob Marley (even though i knew of bob marley i was never as big of fan of his until annies version of this song)

  • I lost this CD in my first divorce.... and I loved every single song on it..... damn....

  • @xavorra HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!! SO DID I!!! Actually it was on cassette in my case. Along wtih all of my Cure imports!!! DAMMIT!!!!!

  • @FXMAN66 that's a big loss! I should upload more from the album just for you and xavorra

  • @xavorra that's tragic....losing the CD I mean!

  • Sounds like the Thomson Twins

    hold me now

  • @WaterOffaDucksBack I don't really hear the similarity myself (I've tried but I just can't hear it)!

  • @envioustime You are totally correct envioustime, it does not sound anything like The Thompson Twins "Hold me Now" but i have an excuse..........I was pissed at the time of posting.I do apologise.

  • @WaterOffaDucksBack lol......in the cold light of day.....:-D

  • I also have the original well before annie Lennox............personally she made it commercial and fucked it up..........but, hey, maybe the guy made some cash because of Annie.................

  • Comment removed

  • @WaterOffaDucksBack it's like listening to two totally different songs in my opinion. The original is way better but I suppose Annie got the song out there. It's nice to get such positive feedback from people who've never heard the original. The Lover Speaks need the credit for this wonderful song; it is theirs after all :-)

  • this song reminds me of the best times of my life. great music, great decade and great times.

  • @clubshaun I agree whole heartedly

  • ...had the tape cassette....put this on the stereo and girls were putty in my horney 20 yr old boy hands...."absent one" is simply beauty also....thx....

  • @zetasong lol....it's such a great album - glad you like the uploads

  • could somebody translate ir into spanish!!please!!

  • why do people always have to criticise other versions of songs on here please dont cram your naive beliefs on me both versions are equally good in there own way so just enjoy

  • Lol

  • I love both Annie's version and this version. This was the original so it will always hold that title. I don't really think there is room to compare simply because both versions are great.

  • the lyrics are beautiful and he sings wonderfully

  • i love this version.

  • @leayape the original and best

  • Comment removed

  • @skinnyJEANking2 Ecept that Nicki's "version" is not a cover, idiot. Annie's song is.

  • Comment removed

  • @skinnyJEANking2 Wow. You really are an idiot. Like I said before, Nicki's song is not a version of this song because it's not a cover. It's her own song with a sample, idiot. You contradicted (if you even know what that means) yourself in your comment.

  • @donthedon8675 lmao. arguing with me on the internet. nice! Face the fact we all have opinions. We can go back in forth and insult each others intelligence every so often, or we can move on. You don't know me and I don't know you. Lmao.

  • Comment removed

  • @donthedon8675 It's just my way? You finally responded to me after a month? Lol. Conversation over.

  • Comment removed

  • @donthedon8675 hahahahahaha I agree!!!! Nicki Minaj sampled ANNIE'S VERSION. Not this one because Annie's version was the one that became a commercial hit.

  • I thought this was originally Annie Lennox's =P

But this original version is still a very good one... wonderfully nostalgic... ^_^

  • I like Annie's version for her voice, she sings it beautifully. This one has the better playing of instruments, so to speak xD

  • @TheZapzupNZ ..actually yes i was a little over dramatic sorry:)

  • The Lover Speaks, like the main song version of this the most.

The background singers, I prefer in the Annie Lennox version(not when they sing but when they do the "do be do be di di di, AH".

Nicki Minaj, can't stand at all.

Overall, I like both versions. I say both because I don't even begin to count that last one. This one though has the most important quality, the lead singer and melody.

  • How gorgeous is this?

Love the big eighties sound and production. Shame it wasn't the hit it deserved to be, but I hope they copped a shitload of royalties from that insipid, elevator-muzak version Lennox flung at the public.

  • A fantastic song..I even remember buying it...Then Annie lennox came along and totally destroyed it!!....She should have never have been allowed to make a song ever again for destroying such an amazing song...

  • i can't find the song on itunes! so annoying

  • the original. the best. thanks for posting.

  • Everyone thought Nicki Minaj stole this from Annie LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i don't remember which version i heard first but that back ground chorus always got stock in my head ! lol thanks for bringing memories. BTW 2 artiest already took this song and its funny how unique this song isn being now around for 30 years ! so instead of criticizing lets all say thanks to the original
