There was proberly a very high crosswind for this, and when the plane gets close to the ground the wind created by the plane blows off the runway and it causes this. Anyway crosswinds are normal.
respect to that pilot! Kai Tak airport was some amazing airport at the time, but now it's chep lap kok. Not the same challenge but in terms of design and architechture, it's off the hook!
I can't believe anyone would try to defend that appalling bit of airmanship. "Normal crosswind landing" my arse. He missed the runway! Completely! Should have been a go around from way back, an unstabilised approach = go around. This pilot is dangerous and irresponsible. End of story.
Wow, long ago I would be terrified seeing this landing, but for several years I've being using flight simulators and immerse myself in airplanes as hobbie, and It seems that aircrafts are designed to this kind of treat, the only thing I am afraid of airplanes is the fire, I dream some day that airplanes use non-inflammable fuel, that if for some reason it crashes during this kind of landing, no fire will trigger.
ok listen Kai Tak Air port was in a bad spot after hong kong sprung up in the 1970's and the 1980's if this video was recorded before 1992 then the reason why is because of the "KOWLOON WALLED CITY" the planes had to fly realy low over this city in HONG KONG to reach the run way very tricky.
And another thing.. "impuslsive burst!? Get out of here! He was badly aligned, since way back! He had plenty of time to get out of there and do a go around! As I said.. In Madeira, that MD-11 would be Dead Meat! Our rwy doesnt have such a large margin beyond the lateral limitation line. That pilot sure was tired enought and tried to avoid a go around or he wanted to save fuel"
I have seen Korean pilots do better at this same airport, with a Korean air jumbo, and aparently, with stronger crosswinds and burst or windshear or shit like that. I just wish Alitalia paid for those broken rwy lights along the right side of the rwy. It sure "washed away" many dollars in rwy lights! I wouldnt want to fly on that MD-11 either without a full and complete check-up to that right and central main gears. Just my 2 cents.
I'm pretty sure my dad was flying on the day this happened. He told me a story where an Italian guy totally botched the landing, and apparently after a few seconds of radio silence, one of the other planes' pilots said "MA MA MIA!!".
Flying their planes like they drive their cars - by the seat of their pants.and i think all on-board that flight will definately need a change of pants.I felt sorry for the poor 747 pilot.if i was sat in his seat i think i would have jumped ship and ran for it!
what crazy?!You should learn something about aeronautics before opening your mouth...that's an example of how a crosswind on final approach can do to a giant like the Md11
No! Thats an example of a crazy pilot not going for aborted landing and go around, when he should have. I live in Madeira Island, have witnessed thousands of crosswind landings while spotting, and a crazyness like this one would have costed many lives here. More than half of the plane was outside the rwy limits. It could only be italian! Crazy fuckers!

No wonder they closed this place down. I used to know a guy who flew cargo to Hong Kong, he said depending on the landing direction, it could be a nightmare. Said he hated the place.
MD-11s are always a b**** to land and control, especially in crosswind, let alone Kai Tak.

if your a pilot that flys big jet-liners you really shouldn't critisise the pilots landings if you havnt done 1 yourself before!

doing a last min correction is dangerous,
this pilot is lucky to be able to land safely...

U can clearly see that is windsheer. Dont punish the pilots. They corrected it well

Landing at Kai Tak airport was complete suicide now we look back at the videos and laugh at the insane landings. Kai Tak will always be remembered.

It was pretty close the plane didn't crash.
