you forgot to mention that there is a 500GB version of the archos 5 out there vs. the ipad's current 64GB model still cheaper than the ipad here in the us at amazon
i have used both of these devices the archos is fine if your using it as is a media tablet but if your getting it to root and modify it ,its not worth it .the ipad is ok but it doesn't really interest me much so i will say this both are good devices
@diablo9333 and when i had it since i got rid of it about 4 months ago it was still using android 1.6 .so if your getting it to root and install other roms on it forget it theres basically nothing for the archos 5
Chippy, do you have any wisdom to offer on the Archos 5 IT with the updated firmware? I believe it is now running 2.1. The Archos 5 is very reasonably priced now that the 43 is out, but I find the 5 better suits my needs. Have the OS/stability issues been sorted out with the update? Battery life?
I bought an archos 5 160gb what they dont tell you is it an`t a true internet tablet, It wont connect to ad hoc ,so when I bought jouitspot for my vivaz phone to use as a wireless router it did not reconize it as it was adhoc apparently the ipad and ipod does reconize ad hoc ,so now im left with a lemon,
@ripcurl010 Had the same problem with that archos let me tell you my solution. Use Bluetooth from you phone to connect to internet on the archos it works faster then mobile web on my phone and its only laggs a few seconds. enjoy if you aint sell it lol

I recently purchased the Archos 5 Android 500gb model for it's FLAC audio support as I want to have a high quality mobile library with me at all times.
It has not arrived yet but I cannot seem to get a guaranteed answer whether or not I can use the headphone jack to connect it to my receiver at the house, or my head unit receiver in the car. Have you come across the ability to use it for this?

I'm going to bring back my 8GB 4th gen iPod Touch tomorrow so I can get one of these tablets. The iPod is nice, but 8GB is just too small for me (actually storage is 6.5GB, bastards at apple).

archos 5: $200 for 8gb $250 for 16gb and $450 for 500gb. i think it is a good price. i might get one and see if it is better than ipod touch or ipad. the ipod touch and ipad are very good devices and are hard to beat

just curious you didnt say if the archos runs multiple apps.... and are the games any good? and if you dont buy the most expensive docking station does that mean you cant use tv on you archos? can you still get recorded shows from your dvr?
With the DVR Station is it possible to read and write to both the Mini SDHC card and an external hard drive on the 32GB units and the 500GB unit? If so what format does the external drive need to be to both read and write... FAT32, NTFS, OSX?
@sashanx It can be done, but in all honesty, it's not worth the bother. 1.6 on the Archos 5 does a pretty efficient job. The new Archos Android devices which are about to come out, are running 2.2 out of the box.
Ive just ordered mine from amazon and I am so excited to recieve it. Although I still would like an Ipad when they upgrade it, this will do for now and it is great for the price and its portability.
the ipad would be a good choice if it could use some of the soft weare that is available for the archos such as the office that can be purchased, or the media player. I hagiven this some thoughts, but i wat to find out just where you stand on this subject.

The last few weeks I've been looking to video reviews and different magazines and sadly every comparison I found was about why any product (or brand) is inferior to apple's.

Hi Steve, i was thinking of getting the exact same portable docking station you have in the clip for my Archos IT 5 so i can usb host my Western Digital 2.5" Portable Passports HD 320gb and 500 gb, but i was getting mixed signals from Archos online forums about that docking station and it's support for external 2.5" harddrives. What i read is that the dock doesn't pump enough power to the HDD's to make them run without an external power source. Can you comfirm this? Thanks for excellent channel
@DjSafX It depends which external hard drive you try to use. Search the forums there is a maximum amount of power that it may require for it to work. For example a 1TB 2.5" hard drive uses too much power to power its 4 disk platters. Recent 160GB or 250GB 2.5" drives may work fine without external power source needed. You have to check the forum to make sure.
@Charbax // Thanks for the answer. I have looked all over the Archosforums, and all i get is mixed info. In this case i am talking about the Western Digital 2.5" Slim Passport 500 GB. My cousin got the Ramos W7 and that one can run my WD passort through USB (propietary). Well i guess i will have too keep lokking for answers. There are no retailers in my city and area that reails Archos stuff, even then, they wouldn't probaly let me break the packaging just to test it out. Thanks!
@DjSafX I think 500GB 2.5" uses too many platters, thus uses too much power to work without ac power. There is a number of Watts that it supports, I think modern drives up with few platters up to 250GB may work, it's in the forum somewhere. If you use a powered USB hub, they should all work.

So i sold my iPad 16Gb to my girlfriends collegue who is basically an iApple, poor guy got suckered by me. Got the Archos IT 5 instead, coulsn't be happier, it's like getting let out of jail after using the iPad and iTunes, i'm literally not kidding. I think 3G is not necesarry on Archos 5 as it is always paired to my HTC through bluetooth which means that i always have internet on my Archos anyway through the phones 3G, super fast and cheap as i have unlimited dataplan on my HTC.
I had the iPad 16Gb, it's a total piece of crap. I knew it was gonna be limited but i didn't realize how ridiculous limited it was. It "basically" doesn't do any video formats, and it didn't play flashpages, which is about 90% af internet and disn't really wanna hack it to avoid the warranty. Audio quality is seriously below par (using 200-400 dollar earphones), i have know idea and couldn't find any info about the iPads audio chip, i suspect it has Cirrus Logic chip and not Wolfson.
This sure helped! I'm going to buy the Archos. Simply for in the bus to school, on the sofa or in bed if i'm lazy, and for in the car. Just to take it with me, put it in my pocket. :) It's an handy (''cheap'')thing, with great capabilities. Thanks! :)

I greatly like capacitive more personally, but the major difference is what you use to navigate it with. Capacitive makes use of your finger, great for gestures. Resistive means you will be using the edge of your nails... while its not good for that, it does allow for a standard stylus which you can't use on the iPad. The iPad can use a special stylus, but they are more expensive and more inaccurate.
outstanding review and comparison , very professional , very serious , no bullshit , although it seems you know less on the archos then you do on the ipad , for instance , the usb port on the archos 5 IT can be used as a USB guest BUT.. it can also be used as a USB host , which means you can connect almost any usb device to it as well .. like card readers , usb dongles , usb hard drivers , usb keyboards (yes) , usb webcams .. etc...
i have a question, can you download on it adobe flash player onto it. because when i went to best buy i tryed the internet out on one of the ipads and when i went to one of my most visited websites that i go to everyday a thing poped up and that adobe flash player need to be doenloaded onto it. So what im trying to say can adobe flash player be downloaded onto the ipad???
now that i have my Archos 5 and have had time to play with it, i'll tell you that the A5's screen goes nicely with a stylus, which is a option i never had with my old iPod Touch because it doesn't seem to like styluses.
regardless, styluses are the better option for me because i have huge fingers.
@shen570 If I'm not mistaken the Archos 9 doesn't come with Android. From what I hear (correct me if I'm wrong) your stuck with Windows 7. Not a good option for me when you have to make sure you have an anti-virus prog on it so its not taken over by the bugs. I NOT a MS hater, but I have been using Linux since '01 and prefer it over any OS.
you know that appslib have Google map for archos firmware 1.7.99? I have Google maps; and i don't was need hack my device!. They have Google map in the new appslib updated.
Note that the Archos has two processors (lemme grab. the specs... The Archos Site says, Main processor: ARM CortexTM-A8, 32 bit, In-order, dual-issue, superscalar core @ 800 MHz plus 32 bit DSP @ 430 MHz), bringing it up to speed with the iPad and giving it a good multiprocessor advantage.
Also, just ordered me a Archos 5 500GB last night -- Can't wait for it to arrive!
@poopskinTheLiar - I've had the Archos 500GB since it came out and although it's much thicker than the SDD versions, you can't argue with the 500GB of storage (miles ahead of any other tablet device). I basically put the bulk of my movies from my PC onto it and it plays pretty much everything. Archos have just added accelerated 3D openGL support and proper fullscreen support and the results really show off the actual power of the processors. It's actually quite amazing how good this is. :)
Steve-more later, BUT, you CAN'T put the iPad in your shirt pocket!! For the money, the Archos 5, with full Google Market, is tough to beat. I paid $269.00US (16GB) + I installed a 16GB micro SD, so for 230.00 less, + some added benefits, i'm good for bathroom, eBooks, and whatever comes my way. UI not as elegant as the iPad, but i'll wait for the 2nd or third version!

damn, i got an archos 5 it 160 gb android 3 days ago and it sucks.
no case,can't tranfer files from bluetooth via phone, it's buggy even with latest FW, a dock is £50-£90, to play certain common vids required buying codecs.
takes HOURS (like 10) to fully charge. The cable supplied is usb cable (not even a standard mini-usb connection), Tethering to phones is very touch and go, bundled software demo purchase crap. Even the built in GPS can't be activated unless you pay firstly
@sweetypie000 - I completely agree with everything you've said. It's a flawed device in some respects. Archos have actually let up on a lot of the "nickle and diming" crap they used to pull. The phone connectivity is probably an issue with your phone rather than the Archos and it uses Android 1.6 for all Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity. In relation to the buggy FW and as it's a proper multitasking device, you really have to manage the amount of programs you're running. Use a task killer.

The only good thing about the Archos 5 which I own is it can play video formats without having to convert them. That is the main reason I got it and that is what I use it for. Typing on the Archos is a Joke. I love the Ipad. I take it everywhere.

just curious you didnt say if the archos runs multiple apps.... and are the games any good? and if you dont buy the most expensive docking station does that mean you cant use tv on you archos? can you still get recorded shows from your dvr?

With the DVR Station is it possible to read and write to both the Mini SDHC card and an external hard drive on the 32GB units and the 500GB unit? If so what format does the external drive need to be to both read and write... FAT32, NTFS, OSX?

@sashanx It can be done, but in all honesty, it's not worth the bother. 1.6 on the Archos 5 does a pretty efficient job. The new Archos Android devices which are about to come out, are running 2.2 out of the box.

Nvidia Tegra II is much faster then a A4.
A4 is nothing more then a old arm 8 at 1 GHZ.
Nvidia Tegra two is a arm9 dual core.

the ipad would be a good choice if it could use some of the soft weare that is available for the archos such as the office that can be purchased, or the media player. I hagiven this some thoughts, but i wat to find out just where you stand on this subject.

It's really hard to find a review of an archos device (or any brand) that is not biased.
The last few weeks I've been looking to video reviews and different magazines and sadly every comparison I found was about why any product (or brand) is inferior to apple's.
It's really hard for trend/tech magazines to understand that different devices are for different markets.

Hi Steve, i was thinking of getting the exact same portable docking station you have in the clip for my Archos IT 5 so i can usb host my Western Digital 2.5" Portable Passports HD 320gb and 500 gb, but i was getting mixed signals from Archos online forums about that docking station and it's support for external 2.5" harddrives. What i read is that the dock doesn't pump enough power to the HDD's to make them run without an external power source. Can you comfirm this? Thanks for excellent channel

@DjSafX It depends which external hard drive you try to use. Search the forums there is a maximum amount of power that it may require for it to work. For example a 1TB 2.5" hard drive uses too much power to power its 4 disk platters. Recent 160GB or 250GB 2.5" drives may work fine without external power source needed. You have to check the forum to make sure.

@Charbax // Thanks for the answer. I have looked all over the Archosforums, and all i get is mixed info. In this case i am talking about the Western Digital 2.5" Slim Passport 500 GB. My cousin got the Ramos W7 and that one can run my WD passort through USB (propietary). Well i guess i will have too keep lokking for answers. There are no retailers in my city and area that reails Archos stuff, even then, they wouldn't probaly let me break the packaging just to test it out. Thanks!

@DjSafX I think 500GB 2.5" uses too many platters, thus uses too much power to work without ac power. There is a number of Watts that it supports, I think modern drives up with few platters up to 250GB may work, it's in the forum somewhere. If you use a powered USB hub, they should all work.

So i sold my iPad 16Gb to my girlfriends collegue who is basically an iApple, poor guy got suckered by me. Got the Archos IT 5 instead, coulsn't be happier, it's like getting let out of jail after using the iPad and iTunes, i'm literally not kidding. I think 3G is not necesarry on Archos 5 as it is always paired to my HTC through bluetooth which means that i always have internet on my Archos anyway through the phones 3G, super fast and cheap as i have unlimited dataplan on my HTC.

I had the iPad 16Gb, it's a total piece of crap. I knew it was gonna be limited but i didn't realize how ridiculous limited it was. It "basically" doesn't do any video formats, and it didn't play flashpages, which is about 90% af internet and disn't really wanna hack it to avoid the warranty. Audio quality is seriously below par (using 200-400 dollar earphones), i have know idea and couldn't find any info about the iPads audio chip, i suspect it has Cirrus Logic chip and not Wolfson.

i did find it difficult to understand , whether the archos is able to play or use regular android apps or games on it (i believe there is a fairly amount of those around , and probably it will only get bigger)
also i've heard the archos hase a resisitive touch screen,
i did read about capacitive , and resisitive , but find it difficult to sum what's good and bad in each,
can you please elaborate on it ?
is the capacitive touch screen really better , and in what way exactly ?

It runs android apps.
I greatly like capacitive more personally, but the major difference is what you use to navigate it with. Capacitive makes use of your finger, great for gestures. Resistive means you will be using the edge of your nails... while its not good for that, it does allow for a standard stylus which you can't use on the iPad. The iPad can use a special stylus, but they are more expensive and more inaccurate.

outstanding review and comparison , very professional , very serious , no bullshit , although it seems you know less on the archos then you do on the ipad , for instance , the usb port on the archos 5 IT can be used as a USB guest BUT.. it can also be used as a USB host , which means you can connect almost any usb device to it as well .. like card readers , usb dongles , usb hard drivers , usb keyboards (yes) , usb webcams .. etc...

In the uk you can get a archos 7 for £10 cheaper than a archos 5!
The archos 5 is £160 whereas the archos 7 is £150!

i have a question, can you download on it adobe flash player onto it. because when i went to best buy i tryed the internet out on one of the ipads and when i went to one of my most visited websites that i go to everyday a thing poped up and that adobe flash player need to be doenloaded onto it. So what im trying to say can adobe flash player be downloaded onto the ipad???

now that i have my Archos 5 and have had time to play with it, i'll tell you that the A5's screen goes nicely with a stylus, which is a option i never had with my old iPod Touch because it doesn't seem to like styluses.
regardless, styluses are the better option for me because i have huge fingers.

@shen570 If I'm not mistaken the Archos 9 doesn't come with Android. From what I hear (correct me if I'm wrong) your stuck with Windows 7. Not a good option for me when you have to make sure you have an anti-virus prog on it so its not taken over by the bugs. I NOT a MS hater, but I have been using Linux since '01 and prefer it over any OS.

Note that the Archos has two processors (lemme grab. the specs... The Archos Site says, Main processor: ARM CortexTM-A8, 32 bit, In-order, dual-issue, superscalar core @ 800 MHz plus 32 bit DSP @ 430 MHz), bringing it up to speed with the iPad and giving it a good multiprocessor advantage.
Also, just ordered me a Archos 5 500GB last night -- Can't wait for it to arrive!

@poopskinTheLiar - I've had the Archos 500GB since it came out and although it's much thicker than the SDD versions, you can't argue with the 500GB of storage (miles ahead of any other tablet device). I basically put the bulk of my movies from my PC onto it and it plays pretty much everything. Archos have just added accelerated 3D openGL support and proper fullscreen support and the results really show off the actual power of the processors. It's actually quite amazing how good this is. :)

Steve-more later, BUT, you CAN'T put the iPad in your shirt pocket!! For the money, the Archos 5, with full Google Market, is tough to beat. I paid $269.00US (16GB) + I installed a 16GB micro SD, so for 230.00 less, + some added benefits, i'm good for bathroom, eBooks, and whatever comes my way. UI not as elegant as the iPad, but i'll wait for the 2nd or third version!

damn, i got an archos 5 it 160 gb android 3 days ago and it sucks.
no case,can't tranfer files from bluetooth via phone, it's buggy even with latest FW, a dock is £50-£90, to play certain common vids required buying codecs.
takes HOURS (like 10) to fully charge. The cable supplied is usb cable (not even a standard mini-usb connection), Tethering to phones is very touch and go, bundled software demo purchase crap. Even the built in GPS can't be activated unless you pay firstly

@sweetypie000 - I completely agree with everything you've said. It's a flawed device in some respects. Archos have actually let up on a lot of the "nickle and diming" crap they used to pull. The phone connectivity is probably an issue with your phone rather than the Archos and it uses Android 1.6 for all Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity. In relation to the buggy FW and as it's a proper multitasking device, you really have to manage the amount of programs you're running. Use a task killer.

The only good thing about the Archos 5 which I own is it can play video formats without having to convert them. That is the main reason I got it and that is what I use it for. Typing on the Archos is a Joke. I love the Ipad. I take it everywhere.

I wish Archos release the same device with capacitive touch screen, Android 2.1 and multiple size (5", 7" and 10") even if I have to pay an "iPad" price for it.
