Timing belt tensioner! They knock like hell until about 2500 RPM, then quiet down, they are famous for making an awful noise when they die, the noise will start again once the RPM's drop.
OMG mine make the same noise, please can anyone tell me what is the problem and how to fix it or what i'm going to need... u know we all don't have much money nowadays lol...I would apreciate the info...thanks for posting this...my car just sat there for about 1 1/2 year now..
it is mostlikley a lifter ticking on yours use slick 50 when you put oil in it the next tie and after about 2 oil changes it will go away mine did the same
I heard these had problems with using oil, so did Honda's 3.2 and 3.5. I think they're almost the same engine. The piston rings were poorly designed and if it ran out of oil this was the outcome
Latest update: Apparently crankshafts for the V6D1 engine cannot be ground down. No one will do it especially if it need to be welded. Only NEW cranks can be bought for this engine. Isuzu had a crappy 2 or 3 years making these engines from like 99 to 01 and even a new crank can be expected to last as long as the old one did keeping in mind you change ALL questionable, damaged and compromised components. Good news is there was enough valve clearance to not damage the valves.
I appreciate you sharing this video. My engine sounded very similar. When I checked the connecting rods, I did not see anything obvious. Then I had a friend put a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley nut and rock it back and forth. That's when the cracked crankshaft became obvious. I have no idea what could break a crankshaft.
It took me a while to see the loose rod too. Since my crank was worn out of round it only showed looseness around top center and bottom center. This is the last time I fix this Rodeo. I love Rodeos but late 99 thru 01 suck as far as engine failures. Hope to be posting a video of it running perfect by next week. I might post a video collaboration of all the work that needs to be done to fix the problem too. Good Luck on the engine!
Loud tapping noises from the bottom of the engine indicate failed connecting rod bearings, failed crankshaft bearings or a broken connecting rod. To repair these problems your engine will have to be removed and the bottom end of the engine will need to be disassembled and rebuilt. In really sever cases a broken connecting rod can cause so much damage inside the engine block that the entire engine will need to be replaced.
@tiffanycourter9 I have the engine and trans out now. Pulled the crankshaft and measured it up. It's within tolerance to be ground down. So the problem was a failed connecting rod bearing on the #1 journal. Bad part is all that needs to be fixed. To do: Grind 2 damaged & out of round crank journals, replace #1 connecting rod, oil pump, all main and rod bearings, all piston rings, front & rear oil seals, head gaskets and oil pickup tube. Fun. I'll be done next week.
im having this problem right now with my 1995 isuzu rodeo v6 3.2 and 1 mechanic said it might be a rocker arm....and another mechanic said the timing tensioner...so i have no idea i did do n e thing yet but if you all have n e ideas let me know or email me at scottschwendner@hotmail.com thanx
Hey, i've got an isuzu 2.2L4 motor that its VERY simillar to this one the v6 3.2, I went to a hundred machanics and they always said me that it was piston problems, inyection failure due the connections to the motor. And i went to an official chevrolet sotre(here isuzu is chevrolet) and the mechanic said me that he was going to keep my truck only 10 minutes fixing it and it was only a bloody connection of the computer who controled the gas to inyectors which was unpluged. he pluged and all ok.
@nevernicecrew Does it says in the pannel "CHECK ENGINE" ?? The pannel showed me that message. The problem was exactly the same the one youve got!! (at least its sounds like)
I have the exact same problem with my Rodeo. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the timing belt. So I paid him to fix it but that did not fix the problem. If you found the solution to the problem please let me know.
@JGOTSOLE I changed the timing belt, tensioner and pulley but that didn't do it. I did, however, just get the oil pan dropped and found that the #1 cylinder connecting rod bearing failed completely. The entire bearing was sitting in chunks in my oil pan. If you have a 2WD automatic it is a royal pain to get to the crankshaft. I had to remove the entire steering cross-member, starter, flywheel cover, support cross-member... The list goes on and on. Good luck!
the rodeo/passport has a drinking problem... some consume more oil than others, but i found that mine will consume about a quart every 1000 miles... not that big of a deal, just have to check u'r oil every now and then... if the previous owner ran the oil dry and didnt check just kept drivin it, it could very well be a conn-rod.... hope it all works out for ya..
how's u'r oil consumption??? i've got a 97 v6 that drinks oil like a sailor... can always tell when it's getting low when it starts to sound like a diesel idling.. if u'r not low on oil, it's my guess that low oil is what led to the knocking... it does sound like rod knock...
@festerfm Honestly can't tell about the oil consumption because I bought the thing with the tick for cheap with the intent of fixing it, so I haven't really driven it at all. I did change the oil right away when I got it home. From everything I've looked at so far the sound is more than likely a bad rod bearing. It is possible to drop the oil pan and inspect the crank from there and change out the bearing. I haven't had the time to do that yet.

Dollar to donuts that's the problem. IMHO

Let's put it this way, when you hear that. Save yourself some money and buy a new engine or car.

@93carp I wish it was that easy. The bearing spun and got pulverized. Rod and crank journal are out of round now and require replacement.

@93carp I think the 2.2 is the same motor from the 94-97 Accord, not the GM 2.2

You have a bad rod bearing..You need to overhaul the bitch. It'll cost $500 bucks to do it yourself.
