For those who commented on the frailty of the story line:
This story is from THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. (Those who haven't read it really should.) It is his second book published. He was probably younger than you when he wrote it... But that is not the point. Think about when this was written and what it established. This man is a revolutionary and a wonderful writer who makes me laugh, cry, and get goosebumps when I read his stories.
@ThoughtTraveler Mars was subsequently invaded 100 years later. Following orbital, kinetic bombardment every surviving Martian was killed. Some in a quite horrible and gruesome manner. General Xavier Larson, great grandson of Bob Larson (the last surviving member of the initial Mars landing) commanded the ground assault.
Hard to believe that NASA would send such a simple minded leader of a Mars Mission like Black. If I were to go to another planet and see a MacDonald's and my High School Sweetheart - I would be suspicious.
@NolanRogers2 well if you understand how nostalgia can compell someone, they would forget about their worries and be with what they lost. They have a feeling that someone or something has come back in their life and all they want to do is spend time with that loss.
Didn't the Earth folks hear the creepy music? Sheesh.

I wonder what happened to Larson? He went back to the ship and did not stay with the Martians.

It isn't that Black is simple-minded--he's just blinded by wishful thinking. And he does eventually figure out the truth--too late.
