Amazing movie. I am a Civil War reenactor for the Union, but this movie truly gives me a view of what the Rebels were fighting for and I truly admire them for it. I look forward to meeting you on the battlefield, Johnny Reb.
As a Yankee, I sypathize with the Confederacy's governmental philosophy- a limited federal government with great leeway for state rights. But that is all. Slavery was the worst cause that anyone could fight for, so I cannot support that aspect of the Southern cause.
There is a series of historical novels written by Harry Turtledove that stretches from 1862 to 1945, describing what North America would be like if the South won the Civil War in 1862. What happens is both amazing and horrifying.
@Thevas11 If you're curious about the series history, here's the Wikipedia link. It's full of spoilers though. If you want to read the books, here's the chronological list -How Few Remain THE GREAT WAR: -American Front -Walk in Hell -Breakthroughs AMERICAN EMPIRE: -Blood and Iron -The Center Cannot Hold -The Victorious Opposition SETTLING ACCOUNTS -Return Engagement -Drive to the East -The Grapple -In at the Death
@Thevas11 Slavery is alive and well and currently known as "welfare" and "foreign aid". Southerners knew the tyranny of the federal government and sought to curb it before we reached the mess we're in today. Do you really think you're free? You're owned by whore politicians and Wall Street crooks. We wanted states' rights then and we want them now. May Dixie rise again.
Well, I dont not much about the history of your country... but the song is beautifil, I have Mary's Cds from October Project.... what a voice, amazing woman.
The United States was and is a tyranny, governed by a few politicians in DC with their own interests at heart and complete disregard for the will of the people or the states. The federal government did not form the states. We the people formed the federal government. Therefore, the states are sovereign and the union is a VOLUNTARY alliance that should be dissolved if that be the wish of the people. The Southern states got screwed and simply wished to free themselves of this oppresive tyranny.
@higuma75 There here Brother, never worry they are here. The Liberals are dimantling our country under our noses but with Gods blessing and men as you mentioned they will take up the cross again. Pray ofr our country, the liberals sure as hell will not.
im from the north. but i gotta give it to the confederates, they had some of the best will power in an army ever, and one of the best generals in US history.
How this song takes me heart to a place so far away. My God great us yet another Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Morgan and many others who are willing to stand in the gap to protect us from the over bearing gov. that lincoln has placed upon us. God help us to stand and tell the truth over this conflict. So long as I have breath, I'll continue to teach what Really happened. Keep the Colors A'Flyin
@StuPedassle711 I see hope springs eternal yet again... Somone else that knows the Truth thank God.
Slavery was a Black institution served upon other Blacks. Started in 1751 by Anthony Johnson, the first court adjudicated slave owner of John Casor. Both men were sub-Saharan African.
@StuPedassle711 Exactly. But there are many who will never believe that. They only listen to those who don't know history or don't want anyone to delve into it. Thousands of dirt poor farmers didn't kiss their families goodbye to fight for some idiot plantation owner. They did it because they didn't want their individual and state rights trampled on. And true that nobody won that war.
This movie was really historically accurate I'd never realised how happy slaves were & before watching I'd always been under the impression Stonewall Jackson was a fundamentalist white supremacist nutcase.
@digvoldon Jackson was against slavery but he he held great loyalties to virginia and the VMI. also the movie shows that he had lemons he was a hypochondriact and beileved they were good for his health. nobody knew were he got his lemons it has always been a mystery.
@trainman1995 the whole lemon thing just goes to show you that there's nothing so much like god on earth as a general on the battlefield. bitter lemonade was the only indulgance he would allow himself from fear of stirring god's anger. he'd been terrified of that since losing his wife and two children, i believe it was, to sickness.
@chopperpilot5 I reckon Gettysburg was better. this one was all about flash and glamour. Gettysburg (which was its predecessor) was all about historical accuracy and nothing more.
Agreed. I enjoyed Gettysburg more for that reason-- all my friends nodded off after the first hour and pronounced it the dullest movie ever made, but I loved the blow by blow, day by day details of who moved troops where and what went wrong or right with that decision. I loved the Ken Burns' documentary too. I always give to PBS when they run that. as a special.
@Sight19 Actually I spotted him all by myself! I didn't even know he had a cameo until I watched Gettysburg, but because I've watched Ken Burns in interviews for years and on pledge drive (PBS nerd here) so I spied him IMMEDIATELY when he came on screen and said his line. It was a real thrill because I never, ever notice stuff like that in films, and this time I did!
Marse Robert was truly the only man who could keep the Confederate Army(mainly the P.A.C.S. soldiers)going, especially after the colossal defeat at Gettysburg. The war would have been well over had President Davis accepted Lee's resignation after Gettysburg rather than object, which is what he did
Your very welcome Gawaine, and thank you for this video. "Going Home", is a beautiful song that stirs the soul. It reminds us of all those men who fought so long ago. The lyrics are beautiful as well. I'm very proud of my "Southern", heritage.
"Happy Birthday", General Robert E. Lee, born January 19TH 1807 at "Stratford" in Westmorland County, Virginia. One of 5 children of Henry "Light-Horse Harry " Lee & Ann Hill(Carter) Lee. A legendary figure even before his death and a most loved General of the South. Lee died at Lexington, Virginia on October 12,1870,& is buried there.General Lee was confirmed General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States, attaining the highest rank of any officer in the Confederate Military service.
@SoBelleofTN You may also want to mention that the great general Lee is the only man to graduate from West Point Military school with out a demerit. The second place holder had over 100.
Great movie, just wish they didn't get so bogged down with the speeches and philosophy in between Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville.

Where are men like these today? Yanks, Rebs, doesn't matter. Where are they today?
We could use a Lee today. A Longstreet. A Chamberlain. A Jackson. A Grant. A Sheridan. A Sherman. A Stuart.

@crimsondrivemusic i have to say,
i am a yankee altogether, but General Lee was a genius,
he was both a military man and as godly a man as any could have ever known in his day,
i have to commend him and the confederates,
they were all heart,
that's the way to go,
this song makes me smile but i can't help but also want to cry,
god rest your soul General,
i salute you sir! =')

The Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. That's just bullshit written by the victors to demonize the defeated.
The balance between state and federal rights needs to be balanced. Nobody won the Civil War. It just upset the balance and led us on this path.
