What kind of a nincompoop wades through thick, head-height brush looking for his plane and leaves his FM radio's antenna fully extended?? Oh yeah, the kind that has NO idea what he's doing.
He used too much power on takeoff and torqued the plane over to the left before he had enough airflow around the wings to counter the engine torque. He needed more right rudder too.
from the looks of it, I think that critter was a little bit on the tail heavy side. they like to tip stall and get squirrly when their tail heavy. when i test my stuff i will usually make it a litle nose heavy just to secure the happiness.
That plane was out of control the second it left the ground. Pilot was clearly over his head with this one. He was tentative from the git go. He should have left it on the ground and maybe polished it. Thankfully he didn't hurt anyone!!
Yeah that run up test was a bit lame. I have flown with a lot of electric planes and pilots and never see that done. Leave the testing for the bench. Was he testing to see if the motor was running too rich?????lol
sometimes you want to make sure the motor doesnt cut out when reved up for a few seconds electronic speed contorlers are designed to cut off if amps get to high, and will cut power to motor.
If there is a problem with the speed controler you want to know before the plane is up in the air My Piper j cub crashed because of a ESC problem I wasnt aware off till it was to late.
you still want to see if the motor cuts off at full throttle before takeoff, so a little bit of testing is a must specially for big planes like this, e.g speed control can burn out if not handling the motor, or if motor has short or issues, it can cut off so you must test before flight, whos the monkey now?
I'll bet $249.95 that theailerons were reversed on the transmitter--seen it before, and thesame thing happened to me--Computer radio with 10 model memory.(forgot to change to the model I was flying) Just because the ailerons are moving in your pre-flite doesn't mean they are moving in the right direction!
i'm thinking he actually just took off too soon, the torque of the prop overtook the effectiveness of the wing making the plane roll just before he killed the throttle... You can see it ballooning and bouncing around just after take off... Thats where my money is...
Very unfortunate. It looked like a pretty nice model. Get G4.5 and practice before trying to fly something like that. Be very careful checking the cg before you fly. Your crash was caused by a tip stall. Pilot error I'm sorry to say.
As Delmar Benjamin said and proved, the R1 is all about speed and angle of attack. The pilots in the 30s were used to flying biplanes with huge wings. Taking off and landing at 100mph was unthinkable. Delmar said that after you've done 10,000 snap rolls in high performance monoplanes, you're ready for the R1. It has even snap rolled on the ground! After landing and transitioning to tail low attitude with the elevator, the left wing raised up and it tried to snap while taxiing fast.
The original GeeBee killed so many pilots due to aerodynamic instability that no one wanted to fly it (can you blame them?)
As "tailwheel" correctly commented,Jimmy Doolittle was the only pilot who truly tamed that flying coffin. Remember too, that Jimmy led the carrier borne B-24 bomber raid on the Japanese mainland. A great leader and aviator RIP.
It's pretty obvious that your knowledge of the history of the Gee Bee airplane is quite lacking. You are another media sucker. Now go get the fact for yourself.
All of you need to chill! Gee Bee's are very hard to fly, and electrics have an extreme amount of torque making it difficult to control at low speed/high throttle settings. And to adminfx, get over yourself. It is not a bad idea to run up the model (yes even an electric) before a flight. What if the ESC cutoff is set incorrectly, what if he just changed the prop and he needed to check for vibration... dang.
let me give you a few pointers on how to take a plane off. 1 power up 2 steer 3 build speed up 4 ease back. what you did was no speed, pull full back and tip stalled it. BANG
To much torque from the elec motor he could not stop the roll with aileron, next time don't use full throttle, slow with the throttle, he must be a rookie. FYI.
I think you will find that he had the ailerons hooked up backwards, you can see him apply what should be right aileron and the plane goes left, you hear him go AH and he corrects it a bit but instinct takes over and he applies right again and it does a full roll and goes in. Been there done that learnt from my exact mistake.
Only talking about looks though! haha I've seen these things fly and there awesome, its amazing that they fly with the design of them.. Sorry about your plane though man doesn't look to bad!
I've got a glow powered version, flies perfect.. The one that crashed here was way too tail heavy, very pitch sensitive resulting in rolling on its back. Very sad.
Hehe... good thing you had a big patch of vegetation to crash into. Doesn't look like it hurt it too bad. I have the same plane, but with a glow engine. Fun plane, but a handful for sure.
Looked like to me as if there is not enough right thrust in the motor. A Gee Bee has a real short fuselage and is prone to left turn prop torque problems. More right thrust needed.

Instead of building a Gee Bee, why not buy a cheap ready to fly RTF, and take off, roll it inverted, and yank the elevator and stuff it into the deck.
Then you can tell all of your friends that you have had experience with a Gee Bee.
This one was overloaded with pot on its way across the border when it tip stalled due to the high wing loading and premature rotation.

All true but what Delmar rarely reminds people is his is the lower powered R2 not the R1. Can I assume he doesn't have the balls for an R1?
