clean the thermal paste (the white stuff) and replace it. Use a hair dryer and dry the damn thing for 1-2 mins and *important* leave it to cool for 20 mins! then apply the thermal paste/grease, with a thin coat.

they didnt need it, they invested in a large fan, and kept the cooling system seperated from the disk-drive and processor, unlike the 360 where the heating problems cause the Disk Read errors and the 3 rings of death.

6SPEs actually, it was reduced to 7 for better yields and then one is reserved for the operating system. Also the 360 has a Tri-Core in-order CPU, if you're going to call the Cell "mild" CPU then do the same for the 360.

The heatsink in the PS3 doesn't have as much to cool as the 360's heatsinks do. Let's see, a single core CPU with SPE's don't put off NEARLY as much heat as a tri-core CPU.

The PS3's cooling works because it has such a mild processor to cool, retard.

It can do complex computations, but that's only good for physics and AI, but not gaming. Gaming has LONG lines of simple code, and the Cell can't do it as efficiently as a regular multicore processor can. It does better with branched code that it can actually break up for the SPEs to process.

Isn't AI and physics part of gaming? Also the graphics cards arent the only magical devices that can produce graphics.

In Killzone 2 they use Cell's cores for: Anti aliasing, geometry, lights and shadows.

In PC games processors are used for physics and AI's. But early before any graphics cards, (they used to be called 3D cards) everything was done by processors. Then 3D cards came and made it easier for processors.

So PS3 goes a step back into the past and makes processor do most of the work.

Yeah, AI and physics are a part of gaming, but they aren't simple code, which is what makes up most of a game's code. If the Cell gets a LONG chunk of code, it is taken by the PPE (the core). If it gets a piece of code with branches, it will send those branches off to the SPE's (not cores). The reason the 360's CPU can handle that code better is because each core can handle 2 of those types of lines at once (2 processing threads per core).

Also, most of the visuals are done by the RSX.

The Cell will only process things like lighting and shadows, but only if it's coded to do so. Rendering, geometry, antialiasing, and damn near everything is done by the RSX with the Cell's support.

Tboninator is right, as far as the clock speed of the processor is concerned, it doesn't matter how many cores you have. Ex. a 3.0GHz CPU runs at 3.0GHz. A 3.0GHz dual core CPU runs at 3.0GHz. It's not two separate processors just two cores, each with their own memory cache (--I think, but that's besides the point--).

Do you know how hot a an 8GHz overclocked Pentium 4 got? Well, it would have gotten well over 100 degrees Celsius, which is the boiling point for water. Yeah, the 360 uses an induction cooling system. It sucks cool air in, and pushes it out the rear. The only problem is, the fans they used are too small and not powerful enough.
