  • typical they had to crash a disco gs top spec........hang on the air bag didn't go off

  • Still.... I like the Disco!!

  • Discovery of that age costs about £1500

    Espace cost around £4000.

disco 1- based on Range Rover classic Which was designed in the 60s

Espace- was developed during the start of the new millenium, over 30 years later

Its no real suprise that the espace came off so much better.

  • Why did the Discoverys airbag not deploy ?? Also the Espace may be safer than some other cars but it is not the safest car made right now, its design is part of the problem. Its crumple zone is miniscule and it carries alot of weight behind it, also the split A-pillar compromises the structural integrity of the safety cage, another car with this is the Honda Fit(which does poorly against any cars even slightly bigger than it).

  • @98MAzdaMilleniaS What airbags? lol The discovery don't have any airbags!

  • ...A FACE FULL OF AGGRESIVE CUP HOLDER...LOL

  • the airbag in the renault caught fire, it'll burn your face..

  • @torquemonsterr airbags are triggered with fire. it's compeletely normal. you'd know that if you had an accident ina a car equiped with airbags.

and, a little burn is a good price to pay rather than being killed

  • @torquemonsterr it didn't catch fire, all cars have a small amount of explosive compound to deploy the airbag, it was mealy just a minor explosion which all cars have.

  • I'm getting to like Renault's

  • 2:44 oooouch!!!

  • Years ago in the wighway to Puntarenas, Costa Rica happened a similar accident, a discovery against a Mitsubishi Expo, the people on the Discovery survived, the passengers on the Expo not.

  • should we be concerned that in the Espace, there were flames when the airbag deployed?

  • The "Flames" seen in the Espace airbag aren't unusual. In order for any airbag to deploy, a small charge (aka explosive) is detonated. The flames/light we see are simply the explosion that initially deploys the airbag. You can see it in other Fifth Gear & Top Gear videos when they slow crashes down. An example of this is Fifth Gear's "5 Star Car vs. Tree".

  • ah ok, I've never been an accident where the airbag has deployed

  • That's actually normal, airbags are powered by a tiny bit of jet fuel, hence the high heat, and it's ability to explode out and protect the occupant of the vehicle in nothing short of milliseconds.

  • so by getting the espace sacrafice the fun in driving, your coolness factor for the one incident hmmm

  • Do the same test with a Discovery Series 2 landmark from 2004 or a series 3 from the same year you would get exactly the same result. The Disco 3 only has a 4 star safety rating. But the Esapce, which is 3 years older in design, has a top 5 star rating. Renault know abit about safety, with all their cars having a 5 star rating. So I know which car I'd chose.

  • @stuey300 the 2007 freelander has a 5 star euroncap rating

  • Have to agree, though I'd still choose the Disco. Regardless of safety issues, the Discovery would be a much more capable vehicle.

  • wait were is the airbag on that other car?

  • lol when he gets in the car at 56seconds its like the car takes of lol he would have a heart attack

  • why do you need a 4x4 to get your kids to school? take the bus or buy a van. i really dont see the point in having big 4x4's as people movers.

they are designed for the country and in the country and on a farm, most crashes are single vehicle. a 4x4 with a rollbar and bullbar is the safest car to be in when flipped and rolled. 4x4's and their accessories are designed to protect the passengers.

id like to see what would happen if they fitted that Discovery with a bullbar, as most 4x4's have.

  • buy a van. the kid might not want to leave when the bus arrives

  • that's like a 90s discovery and a new espace !?!? do the same in an 08 discovery

  • Get the point? BUY A RENAULT!

  • I´d love to see de discovery against a ford ka.

  • Awesome off road it may be, but how many take it off road on the school run in London??? That is the point of this report

  • fair enough the espace is better at a crash test and the discovery is not as good as most cars when it comes to comfort etc, however a discovery is absolutely awsome off road and will go where a lot of 4x4's wont, so i forgive the disco for its lack of road manners as it realy is a truely awsome tool for what it is designed to do. you ca'nt have your cake and eat it!

  • no, no, the video 's a lie. I have the same discovery, and I know well. For example, if you look at distances from the angle of the driver, are few centimeters, whereas in reality it is more than 20 cm, when not being hit the angle as shown by the driver. I think it is propaganda against the 4X4 and to sell new cars.

  • sorry but fifth gear is a more credible source than a random youtuber that claims to have a discovery.

  • Not really. The Espace is one of the safest cars on earth. The Discovery is a very poorly built SUV on the other hand.

  • true the espace is a really good safe car to travel in and comfortable but it wasn't really a fair test that discovery is a discovery series I so its pretty primative by todays standard unlike that espace wich is more recent with more safety features because when that discovery was built land rover didn't have the school run in mind. But if you did the same test with either a Discovery Series 2 landmark from 2004 or a series 3 from the same year you would get a very different result.bye espace

  • true, but a stagering 63% of crashes in america are off set. where one person crosses the yellow line. this is much more common crash than a head on

  • Renault's are the safest cars on the market

  • 100 % AGREE with you on that one.

The new Renaults that are coming out now are THE safest cars on the market.

Volvos are not as safe as you would like to think.

  • New, Volvos are very safe. They have lots safe safety electronical features that help driver avoid the crash or provide braking when necessary.

But the thing I like about new Renaults is better reliability, compared to old ones. As we all know Laguna 2 and Megane 2 sucked badly. New Laguna 3 is above average and new Clio is very very reliable.

  • the problem is, they are testing an old 4x4 against a new MPV. if both cars were from a similar period, the results should be a bit different

  • the point of it is to show you arn't safe just because you drive a landrover disco of a certain age i suppose this would be applicable to all pre ncap cars put it against a modern car its stuffed but in all fairness would the disco still of faired better if it was put up against a old people carrier e.g espace mmmmm id like to see that it would settle a few things.

  • @fullpanicman yes bbbut even in the ncap tests most landys have 4 star and the espace (5 star) only lost 2 points even the 5 star ones lose more so maybe, most likely all would live in that case

  • @fullpanicman thers just as much if not more chance of a old car and newer one having a crash. rather than 2 old cars.

  • @fullpanicman : The fact is that they DIDNT WANT TO TEST a new Disco VS a new Espace, how often will I say this ??!! THEY TESTED A BIG HEAVY FULL OF METAL NORMAL AGED SUV ( I mean 10-12 years ) vs a more modern family car , in this case the Espace, WHAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND ?...

  • @fullpanicman the land rover model was from 1998 and the espace from 2003 - not too much in it, both cars are in the same price bracket so I think this is a practical test since you aren't going to choose a £5000 car when you only have £2500.
