Some ideas...wars of annihilation, defacto as in the Khan's war, attempted as in Hitler, vs one of incorporation as in Napoleon...for Russia/Soviet, eastern vs western approach where they can fall back to productive capacity behind the ural vs the pollock and european buffer in the west; nomadic vs traditional fixed nation state

I am from Georgia and I am 1/4 Russian. Despite our differences I proud of my Russian blood. We need to have a mutual respect for eachother's history and culture. Many noble Russian and Georgian families became one over the centuries. We have the same religion also. Even if this is the only time as Russians reading this will ever hear it..... the thing historians from the west seem to always leave out is the fact that all of russia was never captured(mongols turened back at novgorod lands) and Vladimir monamah and aroslav the wise(person who made the first russian law code(did not contain capital punishement, probably the only one at the time )) and Alexander Nevski, the military leader of Novgorod and eventually all of rus when the time came... the West don't want to admit the russians crushed the sweeds and teutonic Knights Poccia!

@Code5601 Mongolia would have trampled all of Russia but after seeing the carnage the mongols were capable of they surrendered instead since they were given the choice. Those cities and nation-states were left alone because they paid tribute to the golden orde(not horde it is a european misconception, Mongols were always outnumbered in battles so they can't be a horde).Unlike the other khanates, the Golden horde ruled indirectly, not interfering with russia except to collect taxes.

@Code5601 Yes, but Alexander Nevsky paid the Mongols off.... he was wise. The Mongols DID rule nearly all of Russia. He crushed the Swedes and the Teutonic Knights, but was wise enough to know that Novgorod could NOT have beaten the Mongols at that time.

Nevsky, by doing so, probably saved Russia. Not that the Mongols were interested in destroying the culture... they just wanted the money. Most of the "Mongol Yoke" was, in fact, Rusian-imposed.

@lilpiska Ukraine wasn't really a defined dominion those times... just a part of russian territory captured by poles and litovians, which used temporal weakness of Russia due to mongolian invasion. By the way "Ukraine" in russian and polish means just "frontier land, surburb".
