LOVE IT! admittedly not a natural combo but Gillan does well to keep up (with perhaps the one of the all time greats?) i actually really enjoyed this...nice to taste some real voices after a 5 years of force fed x factor pap......mark my words....we'll miss voices like these
Due grandi artisti ma queste operazioni fini a se stesse non le capisco. Ognuno deve fare ciò che sa fare! Qui non si tratta di contaminazioni ma di puro commercio.
I'm currently editing an Ian Gillan video ripped from vinyl, featuring a few songs from his rare Japanese album simply titled "Gillan"...so I am a fan. Just not of his daring step out-side his forte. Some can cut it...Ian isn't one of them in this case.
With the charities and historical yada yada all put aside, this is a prime example of why some artist should stick to what they do best. Ian should have stayed at home that night. Bad enough his voice is not what it once was (a decent rock singer)...this performance should have never have happened. Luciano was amazing though.
Oh...and I am a huge Deep Purple fan, and still own everything on vinyl. Just so you don't get the idea I'm a hater or something like that, Lol.
...The self-sacrifice that Pavarotii has endured over the years to keep his vocal muscles tuned to Olympic standards of physical performance/endurance is the sole and only reason anyone can sing well (to start with) and into their later years. Ian has lost the muscle and mental conditioning that’s all. It’s possible to get it back but it’s a long hard journey for anyone in their later years. As for "character/style”? Well, if you don’t dig it then don’t listen.
A very silly argument, @Mahetae, if you are indeed a professional vocalist and have accomplished what you have stated then you should really know better than to talk about character of voice in that way. There are many ways to vocally express your personality, your personal tastes are not the only way. Even the supreme technically constricted style of opera leaves room for personality as the Maestro demonstrates
@johnnyboy2k oh how right you are ! ...did you hear those notes near the end !! O U C H ! ...still love ian though ....and whats with the woman at the end "DEPP PURPLE " ....what ? Johnny depp is the new singer of purple ?
@Mahetae Gillan hasn't been able to sing as well as he did on 'In Rock' and 'Jesus Christ Superstar' since the late '70s.
And, as for "talking about it":...well, having played the lead role in the above mentioned musical when I was 18 (1992) and being the lead vocalist in a Deep Purple/Led Zeppelin tribute band for almost ten years, I reckon I'm more than qualified to "talk about it."
Ian Gillan is NOT a great vocalist and hasn't been for a long time.
@johnnyboy2k So according to your qualified opinion, Gillan MUST be able to shriek his head off until he dies? The man used to do what he did when he was younger, it's only natural with the passage of time even for Gillan to "cool it" a bit. Listen to his solo albums and the one's with Roger Glover, and the last two Deep Purple CD's: the MAN CAN STILL SING and very well even though the high pitched shrieks are long gone. Take care and enjoy the music!
@Mahetae That's not te point I was making. What I said was that Gillan was a one trick pony - take away the screaming and he has a very unremarkable, somewhat nasal voice. We can thank Arthur Brown for that approach to singing - he had phenomenal range, better than Gillan. If you want proof that such high notes CAN be hit into one's late 50s, have a listen to Glenn Hughes - any live performance of 'Mistreated' is a good example. Quite frankly, Gillan over-sang for too long and ruined his throat.
@johnnyboy2k You have good points in your argument...but frankly, I still like Gillan even though he definitely lost a great part of his upper range. It's a matter of taste I guess and my sympathy toward his singing is quite subjective. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight...I frankly mean it.
Quite hilarious. Pavarotti's effortless ease while Gillan is straining his nuts off.
Apparently it was Ian's idea and it seems Pavarotti wasn't impressed by the result as he walks off before Ian. That said, I don't think Pavarotti should have been so disrespectful as to walk off early.
Ian Gillan's voice has been the best one in 60's, 70's and maybe 80's too. He could have sung with any Pavarotti then, been proved outstanding. But i feel really sorry for this duet! This is not why Gillan has got so deeply in the heart of million people and became the god of rock music. I am so sad for this...it's a pity for his own fame and personality too. Just disapointed...!!! But i still believe that Gillan is the myth of rock singing...
@conkark No matter if you are a singer of other kind of music. The important thing is to to sing well and to show out the abilities of your voice. Here is an example of a good pop italian singer, called AL Bano, singing the same song, in order that everybody can realize what i'm trying to support. Thanks everybody.
@conkark Here is where you can listen to Al Bano Carrisi-a good italian POP singer singing the same aria: Al Bano Carrisi - Nessun Dorma - on youtube.
What I love about this...well, actually, I love pretty much everything, but my top two are 1, they don't sound like an opera singer and a rock singer. They obviously have different styles, but they work together. 2, I'm not sure when this was, but they were both old men at this point, I'm thinking late 50's for Gillan and late 60's for Pavarotti, but it's not just oh, these guys were great musicians once, they were both still incredible. I'm way younger than them and I'd kill to sing like that.
If Ian has 4 octaves, as it is said, than Luciano has 74.
And after all, it is not about octaves. The clarity, precision and warmth of Luciano's voice is beyond explicable. I adore Deep Purple, don't get me wrong, but only when you put these two together, then you see who is who...
This is truth,,, pavarotti asked gillan before this if the would sing smoke on the water,,, than gillan said i want to something more special, i want to sing nessu dorma with you.
I'm a BIG Gillan fan but he had NOTHING to do singing Nessun Dorma side to side with the GREAT PAVAROTTI, both are the greatest on their OWN musical fields but, come on!!!!... I don't think Pavarotti would ever accepted to do a duet with Gillan and sing Highway Star!!!
Ian ruined it...Luciano was great as always...now Ryan Gillian would have been better. i loved how Luciano just got the hell out of there (i think i know what was going through his mind)
Just remember ain't Pavarotti's voice has had good any more... His gold time was 1965-1990. After that his voice not development anymore. The both are old and respected heroes. So I thank Luciano and Ian many many times their this shows. Remember this show is unique anyway. Rest in peace Luciano I miss you.
the volume men .. the volume hass the difference between them ... becouse it is beeautiful.. but i think that is more marketing.. than a great vocal hability... he hass the hability but no in opera area men XD
no rock singer has much volume when compared to even 'soft' opera singers like pavarotti. opera singers generate so much power and their voices are trained to be 'full' from top to bottom. rock singers usually learn how to 'squeeze' the higher notes, whereas opera singer rely on a very specific technique and make sure they don't go to high or ruin the voice. the hit highs with a lot less effort.
just in case Ian Gillan played Jesus in Jesus christ super star opera in 1969/1970.........the original, so this is not the first time he plays opera for all you knucle heads !!!!!!!
I always find it funny to watch Rock musicians stand on a stage with this man with a straight face. The worst ever was Brian May...the man's not even a singer
Are you kidding me? Brian May, NOT a singer? Have you ever listened to the harmonies in early Queen music? Do you think it was ALL Freddie? Have you heard " '39" off Night at the Opera? Have you heard "Leaving Home Ain't Easy"? Have you heard "Sleeping on the Sidewalk"? Check those three out (they're probably on youtube, you obviously don't HAVE them) and immediately fire off a retraction here or send the man an APOLOGY- PRONTO!!!
how, HOW did this come about? Whose idea was this, and how did Pavarotti even agree to this? Pav's didn't look at all happy at the end and exits early. I'm aware Gillan sang in JesusChristSuperstar b4 joining DP, and he gave on of if not thee gr8tst metal vocal performnces on Blk Sabb's BornAgain album, but he is truly dwarfed out there by Pav! Yes, I undrstnd Ian's age and "wear'n'tear," but.......were they friends? Metal singer Mark Boals has done this piece, and would've been more appropriate
Gillan wasn't even close on this. No attempt at proper enunciation, sounds like he practiced it for 1/2 hour. If you check out Mark Boals on YT doing this song, it was REAL attempt to pull it off, like his voice was trained for it, he practiced and studied the piece. Truly amazing for a metal singer.
okay, now I understand by watching another vid. This is benefit for the people of Afghanistan; DP teaming with Pavs for a tune. All the good intention, give you that. Just a little wary still tho, at the idea. AND Pavs did crack a smile. The emcee is HOTT!
Sad to read such comments. I think it was a great performance. I honestly didn't expect it to be that from the start. It's just a very pleasant blend, like high grade alcohol. A bit of this, a bit of that. Bravo to Ian Gillan, he can sing if he wants to =)
And to me this is more impressing than Domingo's singing on Santana albums and such stuff. Pavarotti was very open person and a friend of mr. Gillan.
Yeah, I get what you mean. And once you realize WHY they're doing this, it makes more sense. Im a Gillan fan and like most of his stuff. At the time, I was checking out fav metal singers, and viewed Mark Boals attempt at this piece, actually in one of his bands' shows i believe, and people there still commented:"...he's no opera singer...," but if you watch it, he's PRETTY DAMN CLOSE, about as close as a metal singer could get to being one! And then i saw this1, was a litle confusd or miffed....
...Like your alcohol reference! yeah, a bit o' Jack, then some SoCo, maybe some Old Granddad, all a well-rounded night of good drink ;) Can remember a couple weeks ago or so, i had Ian's performance in the DP concerto, in my head for DAYS, lol!
what did you expect, he's singing an aria!, Cut him some slack, he's not an opera singer. He's an awesome rock star trying his best, even though he's past his best.
I am agreeing with the comments. I also am a fan of both of them. Gillian excellent as the first Jesus in Superstar, but has lost quite a bit. It would have been better had they done "Gethsemane" from Superstar. I'd be interested in having heard Luciano sing a bit of that opera.
Big P was just the very best, especially for this aria! Pavarotti ignores Ian in this duett, he even leaves the stage too early, which I find embarassing.
He doesn`t find it nescessary to compare himself and he is right. Nut he knew before, kind of unfair, but that`s music buisiness....
Totally wrong choice of music for Mr. Gillian.
I just really loved him as Jesus. There, he was the best. Greetings ;-)
One of the things I loved about Pavarotti is he was willing to sing with just about anyone. One of the oddest combinations I ever saw was him singing with Joe Cocker!
ROFL!! you should learn how to spell before commenting in English. Your stupidity is quite evident so your innane ramblings and insults mean nothing to me because you are a no body whose opinions are meaningless.
Ian Gillan is just amazing, the father of the heavy metal scream nd one of the most recognized singers of rock of all times. and how about Pavarotti, God kissed his vocal chords.
Having just listened to Deep Purple, Gillan singing 'when a blind man cries' sheer class and awesome. What a shock when i then find this.Wished i hadn't now. Gillan should let us all think of him as the voice of DP, this was just criminal. PAV looked totally disconnected with the song, guess he didn't want to be there really, Gillan cheapened the whole magic of this song that Pav truly owns. Gillan's early stuff is memorable, this was forgettable.
And you go and fuck yourself moron. I clearly said everything in a positive way and noted that Ian does not fit in Pavarotti's category. I said I would like to know whose idea it was, I never said it was a "bad" performance douche, just different categories. Read and understand first, before you attack someone.
P.S. Sorry gfgfm for the vulgar comment, I just hate douchebags.
Not a perfect performance from Gillan, but just the fact that he was the one CHOSEN to sing "Nessun Dorma" says something about this vocal abilities...
And a duet of Pavarotti and early-70s Gillan would have been one of the greatest things that had happened in musical history of the last century
i really hope technology will go so far, we can one day hear the 70's gillan with pavarotti, dunno like havin the data of his voice in a computer...and then hearing him sing it...man this would only be to awesome...
sorry but have to agree with steve, pavarotti wipes the floor with him as it is an opera piece, i'm sure pavarotti couldn't do half the stuff Gillan does but the fact they have him even singing nessun dorma with one of the greatest singers of the piece ever, i think is an insult to pavarotti and an insult to opera
Gillan Is just incredible in this performance. Show's you how verstile he is. He may not be as good as he was in his younger days. But still kicked Ass.
Perfetta o no onore al merito di questi due cantanti che solamente rivedendo in questo video mi hanno commosso...avrei voluto essere in sala...tutto il resto è noia!!!
I'd have liked to hear Pavarotti take a crack at Child In Time

At first I thought how could you guys be so narrowminded about the video. Mixing different aspects of music is great!
But Gillan sounded really weird in that performance o.0 You're all excused xD
He should have sung it in a classical kinda voice and not in a pop-singing style, it doesn't mix that well I must admit.

kevycanavan 2 years ago
Are you kidding me? Brian May, NOT a singer? Have you ever listened to the harmonies in early Queen music? Do you think it was ALL Freddie? Have you heard " '39" off Night at the Opera? Have you heard "Leaving Home Ain't Easy"? Have you heard "Sleeping on the Sidewalk"? Check those three out (they're probably on youtube, you obviously don't HAVE them) and immediately fire off a retraction here or send the man an APOLOGY- PRONTO!!!

Hellyeah Brian can sing his ass off! If you think those were layered overdubs on
Queen albums you'd be sadly mistaken! I ain't talking all big, I just found out for myself! (: P

...layered overdubbs of Freddy, that is.

how, HOW did this come about? Whose idea was this, and how did Pavarotti even agree to this? Pav's didn't look at all happy at the end and exits early. I'm aware Gillan sang in JesusChristSuperstar b4 joining DP, and he gave on of if not thee gr8tst metal vocal performnces on Blk Sabb's BornAgain album, but he is truly dwarfed out there by Pav! Yes, I undrstnd Ian's age and "wear'n'tear," but.......were they friends? Metal singer Mark Boals has done this piece, and would've been more appropriate
screaminone 2 years ago
Gillan wasn't even close on this. No attempt at proper enunciation, sounds like he practiced it for 1/2 hour. If you check out Mark Boals on YT doing this song, it was REAL attempt to pull it off, like his voice was trained for it, he practiced and studied the piece. Truly amazing for a metal singer.
screaminone 2 years ago
okay, now I understand by watching another vid. This is benefit for the people of Afghanistan; DP teaming with Pavs for a tune. All the good intention, give you that. Just a little wary still tho, at the idea. AND Pavs did crack a smile. The emcee is HOTT!

pav and ian gillian were friends, pav's loved smoke on the water.

yea, now it all makes sense. Never knew they were friends. would be interesting to see an interview talking how they got to be friends.

Gillan.
assa123assa123 2 years ago
Yeah, I get what you mean. And once you realize WHY they're doing this, it makes more sense. Im a Gillan fan and like most of his stuff. At the time, I was checking out fav metal singers, and viewed Mark Boals attempt at this piece, actually in one of his bands' shows i believe, and people there still commented:"...he's no opera singer...," but if you watch it, he's PRETTY DAMN CLOSE, about as close as a metal singer could get to being one! And then i saw this1, was a litle confusd or miffed....
screaminone 2 years ago
...Like your alcohol reference! yeah, a bit o' Jack, then some SoCo, maybe some Old Granddad, all a well-rounded night of good drink ;) Can remember a couple weeks ago or so, i had Ian's performance in the DP concerto, in my head for DAYS, lol!

Gillan is 10 times better than David Coverversion! But, you have to admit that Pavarotti sings better than him. RIP

As long as y'all are speculating on what might have been... what part in Superstar would you have given to Pavarotti?
merloon 2 years ago
what did you expect, he's singing an aria!, Cut him some slack, he's not an opera singer. He's an awesome rock star trying his best, even though he's past his best.

One would expect Gillan to be able to pronounce those Rs in Italian a little better. He's saying them as if he's speaking English.

This would have been something else in the 70's, Ian Gillan at his best, all the same a great duet!

have to agree, Gillan just got old and probably abused his vocals with alcohol and cigarettes. This wasnt 70's Gillan for sure.

I am agreeing with the comments. I also am a fan of both of them. Gillian excellent as the first Jesus in Superstar, but has lost quite a bit. It would have been better had they done "Gethsemane" from Superstar. I'd be interested in having heard Luciano sing a bit of that opera.
sparklingmichele 2 years ago
I can only imagine how he could sing it in 70's. I miss his strong voice. It shows why vocalists shouldn't smoke

I am a big fan of Ian Gillan but he should stick to rock and roll. He is clearly out of his league here.

Big P, too bad you`re gone, you were a legend!
Ian Gillian is also one of my heroes, but they didn`t do him a favour, letting him sing this really big aria against Pavarotti.
MsStarmusic 2 years ago 9
@MsStarmusic There isn't a rock singer alive or dead who could carry this off on the same stage as Pavarotti.
Ian Gillan is one of the best rock singers ever, but if God could sing, he'd sound like Pavarotti.
jackHNv 1 year ago
@jackHNvHello Jack, I totally agree with you!!!

Oh heck, i just had to say my bit.

I must say I like the rock singing Ian, but he does not fit in the category with Pavarotti.
You can clearly see the opera king here and I would also like to know whose idea it really was for this duet.
Thank you for sharing the video.

actually it was Pavarotti's idea jackass, educate yourself
