I love Joss Whdens work. He kinda twists the story a bit. Makes the good guy have a bad heart, while the bad gey have a good heart. So strange, this song clearly doesnt demonstrate that, but the movie did in a way.

I find it interesting that both Penny and Dr.Horrible had bad childhoods (it talks about them in the tie-in comic books) but Penny became very optimistic and believes there's good in everybody, whereas Dr.Horrible became extremely cynical. Though i suppose Dr.Horrible's cynicism is justified given the setting, in which people care more about Heroes and Villains than people like Penny who actually care and try to solve problems in society.

She could have chosen Billy, but really, would Billy have become Dr. Horrible (as we know him) had she chosen him over Cpt. Hammer? I have my doubts regarding that matter.

Not at all. Dr. Horrible's problem with Captn. Hammer is that he always gets beaten by him. And that Hammer sort of 'stole' Penny from Horrible. If Horrible was female, there would still be the same kind of feelings. At least, that's how I see it.

There's this whole 'cockblocked by a bigger guy' thing that you see in the series that doesn't exist (or at least is quite different) between females. What I'm trying to say is that there are aspects of the relationship between Hammer and Horrible that I think are distinctly masculine and that I'm not sure can be translated well into femininity, if you see what mean.

Both songs are true. No one is either Dr Horrible or Penny, we're all both people, because each of us doesn't have just 1 personality, we have thousands. We're never just negative or upset. Maybe I can't speak for everyone, but I feel like a different person nearly every day, sometimes progressive and positive, and sometimes downright pessimistic.

I've been in the pits of cynicism like Dr. Horrible, and I've been on cloud 9 like Penny. So I understand how both of them feels, and I guess that's what makes this song even more special to me.
