BADASS Pete Candoli trumpet on this clip! If you're not familiar with him, he's the guy who does the blistering trumpet solo at the end of Woody Herman's "Apple Honey". Quite an entertaining player...
YOWZERS! Love it! This band puts the boogie back in woogie! If Will and his boys had been any more cool, they'd have been frozen! Strictly from wowsville, daddy-o! Ii could listen to this kinda jive all day long! And those dancers sure know how to "cut a rug"...watching this clip even gave me those happy feet! THANK YOU for posting this awesome clip....you've MADE my day! :-)
Not as good as the 07/23/41 version on Columbia 36340 with Lee Castle doing the Louis Armstrong 'Mohogany Hall Stomp' solo, and the superb clarinet solo by Maholn Clark.
Sad fact that Will Bradley and Ray Mckinley didn't get along. Will wanted to play more ballads. Ray wanted to BOOGIE! which caused the band to split 3 ways. Ray and Freddie formed their own bands and recorded for Capitol. The War and the recording ban did alot to destroy music.
Good stuff. McKinley sang blues in this style with Glenn Miller's best band, the one Miller led the last year of his life. Candoli was in Woody Herman's "Caldonia" band.
Will Bradley trombone,Ray McKinley drums,Billy Maxted piano,Pete Candoli trumpet,Ray Beller sax and Felix Giobbe bass.A lively performance with fine solos.Really enjoyed this small group from one of the best bands of the swing era.
Thanks a lot for the personnel . I knew it was not Freddie Slack but Billie Maxted . They do not look the same and they do not play Boogie Woogie the same either . Regards
This could be Billy Maxted who replaced Slack in Bradley s band in 1941 . Freddie Slack, however was most definitely on another Soundie " Boardwalk Boogie " with Will Bradley s band ( 1942 ? ) .

One of the most naturally gifted drummers in Jazz history.Great to see film of Mac in action.A unique talent greatly missed.

Jim275-It was Moe Purtill and not McKinley who played the killer solo on Glenn Miller's Bugle Call Rag. Ed
