He's by far the best teacher I've came accross, I've bought litterally hundreds of tuition DVD's/videos over the last 15 years, from Petrucci to Yngwie and out of all them Pauls have been by far the best in my opinion, he breaks things down and makes them easy to understand, whereas with Yngwies vids he just wants to show off all his ancient strats, his many watches, jewelry and show you licks that are pretty much impossible to understand!!!

I think that (it's my opinion) Paul Gilbert is the best teacher and guitar player. And you're alright, when Paul teach, he do it really good. When he explain, he makes sure that this is the most comprehensible even for the beginner.

The audio effect Paul uses for the sweeping sound is a flanger with a pedal that controls the rate of the effect. Paul got the idea from Pat Travers. Listen to the albun "Go For What You Know" to hear Pat tear it up with this effect as well. Yes, Pat is one of Paul's big influences.

I don't know if it's necessarily quick thinking. Improv is my favorite thing to do and it's mostly just going off feeling and trying to make the melody in your head. What makes him so amazing is that he pulls out very well thought out melodies on one go which means he is a master of his guitar to be able to know exactly where he is always going.
