I would refer ANY child, no matter how small, to St. Louis Children's. Dr. Jeffrey Lowell's team is amazingly skilled and caring. Our daughter had B.A., was diagnosed by her physician late, and received her liver at 3 months old. She weighed just 11 pounds. Parents, you DO have a choice which transplant center serves your child. St. Louis Children's is a choice you will be happy you made.
My daughter had this. The Kasai procedure didn't work, and she received her transplant at 3 months of age. She was in the hospital a long time, but is now nearing her 16th birthday. If you're going through this, don't give up hope! Happy endings are possible!
jcatizzle - We're sorry to hear your baby sister needs a liver transplant. If you'd like to learn more about biliary atresia and/or liver transplant, you can call 800-678-5437 or visit our website.
I think it's great to see this informational video on YouTube. I think it should be noted, however, that there are children that present atypically. Because my daughter did not present in a "textbook" manner, her diagnosis was delayed for over 3 weeks. I am happy to say she did receive a new liver at 6 months old and is now 4 months post-transplant and doing well. Great job on spreading awareness regarding Biliary Atresia.
