  • you do not have to use all the jb weld at same time, and it only can take heat to 600 so will burn off if used near flame part of stove, thats the non blue flame you see when burning yours.

  • So are these ok to use in enclosed spaces? Do they create any kind of dangerous fumes?

  • JB Quick has really worked just fine for me... Any particular reason to avoid it?

  • very good video.

  • Where can you get the aluminum bottle? I can't find it at any gas stations.

  • Do you have to use fiberglass stove insulation rope? Great video!

  • ferrous cutoff wheel saw, takes 2 seconds.

  • Thats awesome.

  • awesome...will be taking this on the at!

  • what is supposed to be the brownish thing that comes out from the bar in 5:23?

  • Thanks for the info. I'm gonna do this. Also, my girlfriend rides my ass for wearing jeans without a belt. Nice.

  • kool!

  • I know what I'm doing this weekend...

  • nice video!

  • Gotta love, "It's a lot less craftmanship as opposed to brute force"... =-D

  • Worked great the first one I made. Thanks, great video

  • ever see aluminium beer can

  • Blue Bud Can

  • I used a # 59 Wire Gage Drill . 0.041 " . [ 1 / 16 " is 0.o625 " ] It makes a

better / hotter flame - pattern and uses less fuel . However , it is a vry thin drill , and

    can easily break . So , I used a ' Holder " for small drills called a " Pin Vise " . Mine

came from Lee Valley . Go to that site ; put : 81D40.27 into " SEARCH " . Drill Set

    is : 81D40.28 . For Hole Spacing , 24 holes , ( or 23 spaces . ) Circumferance was about 18.5 cm , space 8 mm .

  • I used a # 59 Wire Gage drill . 0.041 " About 2 / 3 of the 1 / 16 " drill , which is

0.0625 " . Seems to make better / hotter flame - pattern and saves fuel at the same time . However , the drill is thin and could break easily . So I used a hand - held drill - vise . They are available all over , but mine came from Lee Valley . This site won't accept a " Link " . But , if you go to the Lee Valley site

and put 81D40.27 into " SEARCH " you will see it . 81D40.28 is Drill Set .

  • cool video man very informative!

  • I was able to find the metal Bud Cans at our local HOOTERS ! $ 4 each . Bought a " cheap " , 7" , 1/16" Thin , " Throw - Away " Carbide blade at our local Power Tool store . Cuts like a dream . Use the Rip Fence to maintain length , and the Miter Gage to keep the bottle at right angles . [ They say Safety Glasses in case it throws a tooth ; not likely . ] However , just

ROTATE the bottle against the blade , after it has penetrated . DON'T push through ! May catch ; get thrown

  • how long will an ounce of fuel burn?

  • hey russell i finally done the stove thing but there is a slightly problem when i put the alcohol to my stove it fucking explode in my body and my hand now i got bruises got anything else that safe i can do

  • @shiznitcrp Well If you live in America You can sue. That's what's great about America . You can sue anybody and everybody. It's great. Too bad it fucks up your nation in the long term.

  • this was grate.... cant I use a beer can, I am unable to find this bottle in Sri Lnaka

  • very nice stove

  • Priming cord... Genius!

  • I keep thinking Ive seen you around or know you Russell.

  • Hi Russel. Great video. A couple questions regarding Fuel Runner Notches: How many notches do you make? How deep should they be? And I assume they are just one hacksaw blade width? How will altering the notch size and number affect the performance of the stove?

  • Have you or could you use longer burning fuels,ie.. ,oil's,lamp fuel..etc.? (nothing toxic of course)

  • Thank you for being one more Intelligent person who Thinks for them self.Just what the "NWO" or whatever darkness it is that doesn't want......us to be FREE!!!.I highly suggest everyone build one and have on hand!

  • In case you don't have a $40 pipe cutter, and don't want the pain of using a hack-saw, and assuming these heavy duty aluminum bottles are too thick to cut with a utility knife or tin snips, you can use a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel. I marked the cut by wrapping masking tape around the bottle. Then with the bottle laying flat, I gradually turned it against the spinning Dremel wheel. Using a soft touch, and turning the bottle several times, I cut thru. A file cleaned up the edges nicely.

  • @JulianLang what happens if you dont have a $100 dremel?

  • Warning: This stove is over twice as heavy as an inch-high pop-can alcohol stove (I measured about 30g vs 10g). But it will hold more fuel, for large pots, and is much more sturdy.

  • Instead of a hard-to-find beer bottle, I also uses a Venom energy drink (by Mojave Rattler) bottle. I cut off 1/2 inch of the neck, to reduce height/weight. Then I cut the side section to 1-5/8 inch total height. The outside section (bottom of bottle) was cut to 2 inches total height. When the two parts are pounded together, the inside section is recessed about 1/16 inch below the top of the outside section, so there's a nice 1/16 inch lip all the way around for a bead of epoxy.

  • i made one of theses

    it 1.75 inches tall

    and does any one know

what size pot these are good for?

  • this guy looks so jewish it's not even funny. OTOH he seems to be good with manual labor ... hmmm

  • russellweekendadventurer website require username and password. hmmm....

  • Great video - What bottle do you suggest as an alternative if these Budweiser bottles are no longer available?

  • @zendant Venom energy drink makes a nice heavy duty aluminum bottle, just bought one yesterday at stop&shop so i can make one of these. it has a smaller neck than these buds so you actually don't have to cut the top of the bottle off, which is nice.

  • @zendant maybe a tuna can

    and make a supercat stove!

  • You don't need a primmer. Its an open well side burner stove, meaning you burn the alcohol in the center of the stove to prime it.

  • This is a useful trick, It would work great for my hiking bag.

  • how many uses do you get out of this stove,

and what kind of fuel do you put in it ????

  • @moonlitesprite the fuel that works best is HEET antifreeze stuff. or denatured alcohol.

  • very nice instructional and good looking flame.

I could see the metal stand for those potpourri bowls working good as a stand for this, could prime it with a lighter or match underneath to start the fuel evaporating.

@bmcgraws comment: I think this bottle is too thick for a sewing needle Not a bad thing, this guy looks a lot tougher and only sligtly heavier than penny stoves.

  • aluminium has an i in it you know

  • Pretty neat but I think I'll stick with my trusty Coleman.

  • how fast can that boil water

  • hey russel

i know for an alcohol stove with i have several working ones that HEET is the

best fuel but will 91% rubbing alcohol work too cause my tests is that both HEET and 91 % rubbing alcohol work

  • "We got the bottom off, we got the top off, time to go for the middle section."

    I like your style.

  • those fancy beer cans where can u get one

  • The wick is not necessary and is wasteful of fuel. When pouring grain alcohol into the stove, light it immediately on the inside and all excess burning will heat the stove hot enough to get it started running. One ounce will heat 2-3 cups of water to boiling. The holes don't need to be drilled at 1/16," only punched with a sewing needle from the inside or best from outside (sharp hole side will be inside). 4-6 holes will work well, 10-12 will give more heat.

  • how many holes do you drill

  • Very interesting Kuddos !

  • hey gay!!! im russle the weekend adventurer

  • Nice! I was wondering what the heck the wick was for. Now I know. I was fooling around making these stoves years ago out of soda cans. I just happen to have 3 or 4 of those bottles around. Instead of making stoves we should invent a workbench that hangs on hood springs. That way when we overload them everything falls on the floor. Yours looks as bad as mine, lol.

  • Russell - Not seen much of you on here buddy. You must be busy...Look forward to your new vids.

  • Alternate to tape - hold a sharpie down on something and spin the bottle, same as you did with the knife.

  • 4:50 While it is true that JB Weld is the baddest shit on Earth...I didn't know that it was fireproof.

  • @Masowai it can withstand constant tempature of 500 degrees F ive used it on engine blocks its my favorite epoxy

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • I looked everywhere for anything in one of those bottles today, no luck. I found one of those wrenches though, but for the price I could buy a snowpeak. I'll go with hacksaw or my dremel. Great stove though, nicely done.

  • nice to see somebody move up to the heavier duty aluminum bottle. my homemade stove from regular soda cans is nice but I'm going to make one of yours for variety. You have a nice website too. Thanks!

  • nice stoves . . though the holes do seem a bit big; maybe the reason why you will be using 'a couple of ounces' of alcohol each time - as opposed to a half ounce or an ounce . . .

    thanks.

  • 6:08-6:14 sound perverted

  • i swaer i aploded your vid dint give a standing ovation but its late and im tierd . but any way verey nice stove.

  • Great work! Thanks for the vid, definitely going to try this!

  • I was making an alcohol stove the other day and was using a 1/64 bit and broke it! Grrr!

  • can u use white spirit

  • That is the best alcohol stove idea I have seen yet

  • cool stove

  • THAT was fun to watch. Great stove!

  • Does denatured alcohol leave any soot on the pans?

  • my friend showed me his stove and yes, it does. im not sure if he was using exactly denatured alcohol, but i do know that it was not normal alcohol or red rubbing alcohol.

  • Gracias, it was cool, I have a coleman stove, now I am considering to change it by one like yours.

  • I made the stove and it weighs just a little over an ounce

  • Thanks! That was great!

  • too much work. But thanx for the time and effort.

  • i used this design to make my stove very similar didnt really need the fiberglass wick but i used venom energy drink bottles since those beer bottles are only available during race season by using tin snips to cut can helps but u have to start them back a bit nad i also used yellow heet works great

  • do you have any idea how much the stove weighs finished please get back to me, thanks

  • just over 18 pounds.

  • did you mean to but ounces or are you just being a dick?

  • i'm just being a dick.

  • Awsome stove 5*

  • will it work with HEET ?

  • yep!!

  • @PhillieBRidin any stove will work with HEET I've actually heard HEET burns better and lets of less fumes

  • it actually works a mazing with purple meths, it burns very hot

  • @PhillieBRidin

that takes a little work but seems worth it if you make 5 or 6 at a time. for simple backpacking meals check this out. (search) almalfish channel

  • @PhillieBRidin Any alcohol stove will burn HEET , no matter of the design , how its made or if it is home made or store bought .

  • good idea

  • Already made a few stoves and they're getting better! Did you somehow sharpen your pipe cutter? I purchased one and it only crushes the bottle. I can't seem to get that tight snug fit either. Any suggestions? Thanks for the great ideas!

  • @MooseZ71 if you crank down the pipe cutter to much the bottle will crush, you have to start of gently and eventualy the bottle wil fall in two.

  • this is an awesome stove idea. thank you for this outstanding idea

  • Hey great stove idea, im just about go right now actually make one... Just wonderin, can you use multiple fuels or is alcohol the fuel that would work. I dont think it would matter, but hey what do I know...

  • thank u very much man! awesome!

  • Great work! Thanks russ! This really helped me a lot!

  • awesome job!!

  • that was a good stove thanku...... it will deff b cheaper than buying one

  • hey, could you put the wick inside the stove before you bang it together?

  • Where did you get your pipe cutter, and how much did it cost? How well does it cut tin aerosol cans?

  • Get it from a tool store

It cut pipes, copper, spraycans up to 2-3 mm

  • What's a good price for one that can cut up to 2-1/2 inches like this guy's can?

  • from a hobby tool shop you can get a OK pipecutter for 3. Inche cutter for 15$

It cut metall up to 3 mm

  • u can get them at any hardware store..... about 5 bucks and they will cut almost any round metal object

  • great video!

I always say the trademark of a great homemade alcohol stove is if it can be lit with only one match, and your is one of the first I have seen that does that upfront with no second try. Great job!

    *****

  • dude, thanks so much for this!

  • i shoud of done this for sicen fair

  • What should be used as a wind screen? I'm thinking about a piece of aluminum duct, but haven't tried it yet.

  • Thanks!!!

  • I will try this again, how many holes how far apart?

The tool you use is simply a pipe cutter.

great video along with the other by "the koreanguy" This is simple to make.

If you use 2-3 rivets you do not need the JB weld at the top.

  • For those having difficulty finding the "stove rope", I use "welding cloth" found at any Home Depot, etc. It's the perfect thickness and can be cut into strips using scissors. Makes the perfect priming wick since it's fireproof.

  • I like how sturdy this is compared to the soda can stoves. Does anyone know how much weight this would support? like a potful of water??

    ty

  • Make it right, you can stand on the thing. Seriously.

  • Btw thats a pipe cutter lol but yeah works great on cans and stuff also lol.

  • I was wondering, is it possible to make a 1 port stove?

I ask cause I want more of a blue candle type thing that's fun to screw with, or will the flame go out?

  • Very inventive. I'm thinking put the whole thing in a coffee can not only for wind block but to keep the pan off of the flame. I'll try it and let you know. I'll prolly cut holes in the can so as not to starve the stove for oxygen.

  • I'm such a party pooper, but this is seriously not the best design for a penny stove knock off. Some interesting ideas, but the point of this stove is to make it in a "minimalistic" fasion. All you need is a coke can and a razor, maybe a thumb tack and a marker if you wanna get super fancy. Look up coke can stove. You won't need your jack hammer for these models lol sorry

  • Or this is just a different concept that wasn't trying to compete with the can stoves. There's no reason to not accept this one for what it is (a good video and a good stove) just because there is a different stove out there. He didn't preface it with anything that would imply it was supposed to not require any tools, so really your comment doesn't even capture what the video is looking for. This stove is convenient, fast and very sturdy (much sturdiar then an aluminum can stove).

  • Actually, this stove allows you to sit the pot right on the stove and there is no need for a pot stand... When you set the pot on top it pressurizes the stove and makes it more efficient. It depends on your situation ... I like both but you do need a pot stand for the penny stove.

The wick isn't necessary, a primer pan would work also, but the wick is a good way to incorporate priming into the design... good job.

  • could you make th same thing out of a lynx/axe can?

  • Yes.

  • how long do they burn?

  • Depends on how much alcohol used.

  • You should sell me one, I am fifteen so I currently do no have acces to any beear cottles.

  • how you gonna get access to the alky-hol?

  • Buy it at any gas station in the world... Heet.

  • D'uh, forgetting that some yanks don't get sarcasm OR irony.

  • sorry for the terrible spelling of "beer"... I hit post before I read it.

  • that is really cool

  • Very cool, Russell. You know, you probably don't even need the outer priming wick. Just ignite the vapors at the top of the reservoir (in the center), and the aluminum will quickly conduct the heat to the fuel in the shell. +5 in any case. :)

  • I just tried this with a bottle I got at the fireworks show last night. I used a miter saw to make the cuts. Then I made 8 radial cuts with a hack saw on the 3/16" or so of the top part that stuck up over the base after I banged it in. Then I took my multitool and folded that 3/16" of material down over the joint between the top part and the base and crimped it a bit. I still need to get the JB and the wick, but I'm super impressed so far. Thanks, Russell, for a great video and concept!

  • It burns beautifully!

  • Also, what about making a video on the popular penny stove? You could maybe experiment like you did with the Super Cat. However, I ask this because I find your videos very understandable.

    Thanks

  • Props to all of your videos, they have been fun to watch. However, I have some questions concerning stove: would you say this stove would be ideal for a 4.5" diameter pot? Or would your modified Super Cat work as well? Do you have any recommendations to other neat pressurize ("blossoming") stoves that would work well with a narrower pot and that are fairly simple to build?

I'm still having trouble looking for those types of bottles for the stoves in this video ...any suggestions?

  • I built a few of these and have begun modifications 1 of which made the stove burn 33% longer, brought water to steam in half the time and cut 2 minutes off a rolling boil time

  • you should make a video. id like to watch it. thanks

  • I will as soon as I can figure out how to get the sound to work when transfering a file from my camera to my computer lol.

  • Great Design!!! I´ve taken it from the mountains of Mexico to the forests of Panama. Easy to use, sturdy. I use 96% potable sugarcane ethanol in an old campsuds bottle and burns hot. i´ll love to learn how to simmer, but for now: coffe, ramen and soups heat up fast.

I loose the wick, an extra few seconds to blossom don´t matter.

    thanks russell

  • miter saw is the fastest way but be careful

  • Wow, thanks a lot, that's just amazing.

  • very nice i never would thought of doin that if i had never seen this thanks

  • what was the point in cuting up the whole bottle if he only used the bottom?

  • oh, right

  • Did you actually watch the video? He uses the top, inserted into the bottom.

  • what feul works.

  • Nice design, well explained, great vid!

  • Its a pipe cutter if anyone is looking for that tool comes in all diffrent sizes

  • I used lantern wicks on my first 2, but found that the wick wants to smolder. On my 3rd I took and cut the silver bottom off of a soda can with scissors. Smash the bottom of the can down with ur fingers then it's ready poor some alcohol in the can bottom, pour some in ur stove, put the stove in the can bottom and light her up. No spillage, but the can bottom gets hot enough to scorch wood, but on the pluss side it primes the stove in seconds

  • If you can't find anything to use for the wick try using a tiki torch wick. They're fiberglass, and don't even need to be cut (the length is exactly enough to wrap around the bottle once). A bit thick, but that just makes it easier to avoid spillage when priming.

  • And for the kids that want to make one you can also use the mountin dew bottels with the cool writeing on them. And This is the best one i have seen on youtube thanks.

  • The priming wick is a great idea.

  • clever bastard...nice job.

  • useful video

  • very impreaive

  • Very impressive!

  • awesome

  • that is really kewl. i always bring a bottle of 180 proof everclear when i camp..... or when im home.... or pretty much anytime im awake ha ha. will everclear work 4 this?

  • excellent vid! thanks

  • nice mate :)

  • Instead of slots in the bottom drip two 1/16th inch holes 1/8th from the bottom now the alcohol will equalize inside and out. Now you can drop a match which will start a small preheating fire inside. no need for the wick. I love the stove I hope I can find these cans as I have not seen them here.

  • me likey

  • Thanks for the video! Very nice.

  • That was very educational.

it was also very well produced.

    Thank you

    Nice job

  • I prefer a smaller diameter hole for the jets.

  • LOL ! "a lot less craftsmanship then it is brute force". My last Ford was made with that philosophy(last ever Ford).

Thanks for my new stove. I followed your directions. Took me 2 days to find the bud bottle. No town with a high income/education level carries them. I had to drive far to a red neck town obsessed with watching football at stadiums to find those bottles.

Kind of scary though, parking in a dirt lot with only F250 trucks with gun racks, inside the store was a fog of cig smoke.

  • VERY NICE...........

  • Thanks, using your vid as a guide I made a similar stove out of a Venom energy drink bottle (steel wool took the paint off). I used a press fit, no JB weld. Also I used a push pin to make the holes, if you have a reasonably strong grip you can just push the pin through the can wall no pounding. I might add a wick at some point... kind of optional I think. As others have said, great design, and again thanks!

  • woah... almost like a gas stove

  • Your hack saw blade is in backwards , it cuts a lot easier when the the teeth are facing forward.

  • were do i get that type of alcohol , please reply

  • in the USA you should be able to get denatured alcohol at any camping supply store. in a pinch you can use the stuff they sell in drug stores too.

  • Lowes or Home Depot in the paint section...or at least near the paint section with paint thinner and stuff. It will be in a metal, rectangular container...they will probably have two sizes, small and large. And its pretty cheap too..."Denatured Alcohol"

  • Thanx!

  • Hey bird

Camping stores do not carry them.

Lowes and Homedepot only carry the alcohol cleaner, which does not burn cleanly.

Go to a automotive stove and get HEET or a air brake antifreeze. You can also get pure ethanol or methanol, it will comes in huge drums.

You can also distill pure alcohol using a second step distillation procedure using benzene at low temperatures, but its not recommended unless you have knowledge in chemistry and a lot of common sense.

    Also try Everclear alcohol.

  • thanx!

  • Lowes and Home Depot do carry Denatured Alcohol which does burn cleanly. I have a couple of videos up, one of them shows some D.A. in use. burns great, and yes, perfectly clean. Take care...Great Video Russell.
