how much money must i spend do build one of those? i drafted (a smaller/little different) one and now i am wondering myself how realistic it is to build it on my own, because as a student i have a limited budget^^.

The total cost of the project was around $400-500, mostly spent on nitrous oxide ($8/pound). As I have no machine tools, the chamber was built from a hydraulic cylinder and all other parts are from the hardware store. A local automotive speed shop loaned me the nitrous tank, which greatly reduced costs. Such stores are great resources for this kind of work.
