  • why is a 'pool shark' called a 'pool shark', when a 'card sharp' is called a 'card sharp' ??? why not call it a 'pool sharp' or a 'card shark' ??? I'm confused.....!

  • to chandler, "shark" comes from the german word "schurke" and a shark is literally a parasite that preys on others. thus pool shark as anglo saxon. the term "card sharp" derives from the word shark for english or a prefigures the variant "card shark". card sharp is more negative for the reason that it swindles or cheats rather than playing as a shark that beats straight up with skill.
