I remember having to go look for a car for my sister while this was going on. I got so sad by all the nice cars being traded in for shit for good cars. People were trading in 2005 Ford Explorers and Chevy Trailblazers. Like WTF people?!?!?! I think really the only cars that did not get traded that much are Toyotas.

False, I got an NP231 from an 1994 jeep cherokee XJ that was a clunker at the local pull it yard.... they sell everything off of them except the engine... at the yards in the phoenix "u pull it" yard they mark the clunker cars and then engines with orange spraypaint so you wont end up pulling the engines. Everthing else is fair game and gets recycled into other vehicles

It makes me happy, lots more cheap parts in the yard for my vehicles, that wouldn't be there otherwise !

If you find a 500 dollar vehicle today, it has no engine or tires and cfc will make it even more difficult for those who really can't afford a new vehicle because the cash specials were all junked. This is just as bad as the federal farm subsidy program where the government tells farmers what crops to grow or not grow.

Bales of cotton, potatoes, and silos of corn sit idle and rot away because of government interference in the free market.

FDR started the program in the 1930's, and no president since has had the balls to put an end to or at least overhaul a program that gives farmers taxpayer dollars to waste valuable food and textile crops.

Yep.When I got my F100,it needed a new oil pan.A brand new one was 90 dollars.I went out to the junkyard and got one for 40 bucks.If they destroy these vehicles,then it'll be harder to find parts,and it'll cost alot more for parts too.Not alot of people can afford 100 dollar car parts.

Well, supposedly only the drivetrain is going to be scrapped, but seeing as I've already seen some "clunkers" crushed, I bet more often than not the whole thing is going to be crushed. I guess the somewhat good thing is that the more common vehicles are the ones most traded in, so hopefully there will still be enough of them to supply the scrapyards after this mess is over. I usually buy new OEM parts, but there are some non-wear parts that are just WAY more expensive than they should be!

I agree.The thing is,there's alot of Ford trucks being destroyed,and that's the kind of parts I need.When it comes to major replacement parts like alternators,I usually buy new stuff,but things like oil pans and intakes,are what I get at junkyards.If they scrap the engines,then I won't be able to get these parts.Even though they're supposed to junk the engine,they end up junking the whole vehicle for even more money.Money in there pocket is all they care about.

our Aerostar has more than 600,000, our Explorer had 221,000, both of them are In great shape. Cash for clunkers is the stupidest idea the goverment has ever had, and because the Presedent is new, and Black, they jump and agree with his every decision

79Datson: Also, a lot of these clunkers aren't going to live on as parts. Salvage yards have 6 months to part out the clunkerr, and then by law the clunker must be smashed. 6 months isn't enough time.

There's still a tremendous amount of waste involved when destroying a car. Cash for Clunkers isn't as "environmentally-friendly" as they're trying to make us believe. The plastics (dash) and fabric (seats) can't be recycled.
