Add me to the list of passionate Gillian Welch and David Rawlings fans...one of the Greatest Duos ever...their voices blend perfectly...excellent songs...David is a master of his instrument...a style so unique and distinct...these guys are brilliant...thanks for sharing the clip.
@wankatronic Not sure about that wank. Most fans of trad. folk and bluegrass have always known what a brilliant guitarist Rawlings is. Mainstream, well: Whatever. I heard his soloing first on Annabelle in the late '90s on their first album and there was no doubt I was listening to a guy who'd absorbed everything great in bluegrass flatpicking, but with blues and a modern take... And that Epiphone has that lovely, biting, woodsy tone of those early solid-spruce Gibson archtops.
As an amateur soprano singer, I know how difficult it is to nail a duet like this. I have sung this in my house so many times and never get it right. They are magic.
You can tell that Dave really, really loves those tight harmonies on the chorus. Every time he brings his voice closer in pitch to Gillian's, he gets this amazing, authentic smile on his face. Their chemistry is 'lectrifying!
@mikeb23ft It's from the "Down From the Mountain" concert in the Ryman in Nashville. The concert celebrated the music and musicians from O Brother Where Art Thou.
My feelings exactly! Shall we take music from the master Lucifer and claim it as our own...with Gods permission. I think its possible...but i defer to God.
Such a beautiful tune (written by the performers). What sets them apart is their subtle arrangements and perfectly balanced harmonies. This track appears on Time The Revelator, one of the best albums of the decade.
Love the way he brings his guitar to the microphone for just those 2 notes. He understands that those 2 notes are more powerful than an avalanche of unnecessary ones
If there is a heaven, if there is anything holy in this god-awful world: Gillian Welch and David Rowlings are first in line to a perfect place. Bless this duo. They have have got me thru hard , hard times.
I dont know anything about musical instruments but I never seen a guitar like that one! There's no hole in the middle (says he sounding very technical). It sounds almost like a banjo at times.
It's a '35 Epiphone Olympic archtop, which was a totally cheap-ass guitar in its day (Epiphone has long been Gibson's budget line). Nobody understands howthehell David does *what* he does with it, but lots of people are trying to find out; Epiphone Olympics today cost three-four times what they did ten years ago.
err... silvertone makes one that is. i see your question has already been answered, i have a better question, why are the oldest comments displayed first?
The guitar is a 1935 Epiphone Olympic. It has beened tuned for/by David. for the great tones. Also notice a very even volume up the neck. Great sound.
omg, just saw these 2 lovely performers at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. They totally rocked the house. Very generous performers. Just 2 people and a couple of mikes. Lordy. Their last encore was a stunning rendition of 'White Rabbit.' Felt like I was back in Isla Vista, Santa Barbara.
to sneezy, interesting point, they are the same performance, but I'm guessing in the mastering process, or the conversion to youtube that it got skewed. It isn't a total half step off.
and I LOVE gillian Welch. one of the few that I have not seen live that i feel is a MUST
This performance seems so obviously to be the same that was included in Time (The Revelator) - why is it that this video is about a half-step higher than the album recording??!
They also performed this song along with "My Dear Someone" on the "Down From the Mountain" DVD. That particular performance was done in Nashville prior to release of the movie, "Old Brother Where Art Thou."
this is from that "down from the mountain" dvd which was like a documentary of a concert that they put together at the ryman (sp?) auditorium featuring the artists from the soundtrack of "o brother where art thou"
gillian is all over that dvd, if you're a fan its a great buy
Such a great song!

@abluedude Yes and user producers wanted to split them up??? But Gillian saw them coming and wanted nothing to do with it. And are we all glad.

it's called an archtop guitar. they have f holes like a violin or cello... really big in the 20's and 30's... also called a parlor guitar.

This is what a true artist does, compensates for anything, uses flaws to their advantage, explores the full range of possibility in their instrument.
