  • Such a great song!

  • Add me to the list of passionate Gillian Welch and David Rawlings fans...one of the Greatest Duos ever...their voices blend perfectly...excellent songs...David is a master of his instrument...a style so unique and distinct...these guys are brilliant...thanks for sharing the clip.

  • David Rawlings is so completely underrated as to be ridiculous.

  • @wankatronic Not sure about that wank. Most fans of trad. folk and bluegrass have always known what a brilliant guitarist Rawlings is. Mainstream, well: Whatever. I heard his soloing first on Annabelle in the late '90s on their first album and there was no doubt I was listening to a guy who'd absorbed everything great in bluegrass flatpicking, but with blues and a modern take... And that Epiphone has that lovely, biting, woodsy tone of those early solid-spruce Gibson archtops.

  • Some music puts a big smile on your face, sometimes makes you giggle and sometimes even laugh out loud... this is one of those magical performances.

  • love their sound--just down home music

  • Check out CBE new recording artist Sabrina Antoinette at youtube/sabrinadivarock

  • As an amateur soprano singer, I know how difficult it is to nail a duet like this. I have sung this in my house so many times and never get it right. They are magic.

  • You can tell that Dave really, really loves those tight harmonies on the chorus. Every time he brings his voice closer in pitch to Gillian's, he gets this amazing, authentic smile on his face. Their chemistry is 'lectrifying!

  • @abluedude Yes and user producers wanted to split them up??? But Gillian saw them coming and wanted nothing to do with it. And are we all glad.

  • I like Dave's 7th in his vocal harmony on "..lectrify.."

  • Gillian Welch and David Rawlings go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

  • Does anyone know if this was at the Fox in Atlanta?

  • @mikeb23ft It's from the "Down From the Mountain" concert in the Ryman in Nashville. The concert celebrated the music and musicians from O Brother Where Art Thou.

  • That guitar solo makes me want to hollar!!!

  • Yep, me too!

  • Doesn't get much better than this...

  • I love this. I love this. I love this.

  • spine tingling harmony - they belong together.

  • My feelings exactly! Shall we take music from the master Lucifer and claim it as our own...with Gods permission. I think its possible...but i defer to God.

  • I will love this forever! Those two voices were made for each other.

  • goddamn...love it

  • I want to sing the Rock n Roll too!

  • Dave sounds a bit like George Shuffler there!!

  • New record! I have now listened to that guitar solo 100 times in a row!

  • Absolutely stunning and amazing!

  • O Brother, where Art Thou was the first time i heard this style of music.

It's not very popular in Austria, but i am a trusted fan of Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss since then :)

  • oh man!!!!! that guitar solo is really something else

  • Comment removed

  • Such a beautiful tune (written by the performers). What sets them apart is their subtle arrangements and perfectly balanced harmonies. This track appears on Time The Revelator, one of the best albums of the decade.

  • Very good harmony between the voices. The rythmical treating of the piece is skilfull too.

  • You can tell EVERYONE at that gig has taste!

  • One of my favourite performances ever...they are incredible.

  • Wunderbar!!!

  • Love the way he brings his guitar to the microphone for just those 2 notes. He understands that those 2 notes are more powerful than an avalanche of unnecessary ones

  • Wow. Great observation brother! You are right on with that.

  • @Crewmannumber6 and then just for good measure he does a solo with an avalanche of notes too ;)

  • love that b7 rawlings hits in the first chorus vocal harmony! wow, amazing!

nothing quite like playing around one beautiful large diaphragm microphone!

  • If there is a heaven, if there is anything holy in this god-awful world: Gillian Welch and David Rowlings are first in line to a perfect place. Bless this duo. They have have got me thru hard , hard times.

  • Amen

  • Love Gillian and David!!

    Fantastic.

  • good

  • oh the smile on that dave, kinda matches mine.

  • I dont know anything about musical instruments but I never seen a guitar like that one! There's no hole in the middle (says he sounding very technical). It sounds almost like a banjo at times.

    Anyone know anything about it?

  • it's called an archtop guitar. they have f holes like a violin or cello... really big in the 20's and 30's... also called a parlor guitar.

  • It's a '35 Epiphone Olympic archtop, which was a totally cheap-ass guitar in its day (Epiphone has long been Gibson's budget line). Nobody understands howthehell David does *what* he does with it, but lots of people are trying to find out; Epiphone Olympics today cost three-four times what they did ten years ago.

  • This is what a true artist does, compensates for anything, uses flaws to their advantage, explores the full range of possibility in their instrument.

  • what flaws? seriously?

  • err... silvertone makes one that is. i see your question has already been answered, i have a better question, why are the oldest comments displayed first?

  • sorry to be redundant sorry to be redundant...

  • The guitar is a 1935 Epiphone Olympic. It has beened tuned for/by David. for the great tones. Also notice a very even volume up the neck. Great sound.

  • omg, just saw these 2 lovely performers at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. They totally rocked the house. Very generous performers. Just 2 people and a couple of mikes. Lordy. Their last encore was a stunning rendition of 'White Rabbit.' Felt like I was back in Isla Vista, Santa Barbara.

  • David Rawlings Guitar is the voice of an Angel

  • he rocks...she stomps...its awesome up close

  • Can't touch that! They Rule!

  • love

  • Good stuff. just got a paycheck....part of it's going toward one of her cds!

  • Replay....Replay....Replay

    Classic!

  • Absolutely delightful.

    thank you!

  • I like the faces David makes when he's singing and when he's playing the guitar. Excellent SONG!

  • worth it just for david's solo. but what a pair.

  • You guys are the best.............

  • amazing.

  • david rawlings guitar solo=perfection. i've seen them live twice and they were amazing both times. so cute on stage together!

  • Love you Gillian. I could listen to you all day long.

  • Omg, they are amazing!!

  • I HATE today's country music, but I love Gillian Welch.

  • Gillian Welch isn't really "Country", she's more of a folk singer

  • not even so much folk as a special variant of bluegrass.

  • Amazing guitar...how does he do it? Genius!

  • practice

  • Selective ears. Not often granted.

Practice counts only if you're talented, or else you become a technician/teacher which is not bad either.

  • What a couple on stage. Love this clip!

  • Born musicians.

  • I love that solo, every time I play it I fell like I'm some David on stage.

  • That solo makes me smile every time I hear it. Freaking awesome!

  • wonderful solo

  • to sneezy, interesting point, they are the same performance, but I'm guessing in the mastering process, or the conversion to youtube that it got skewed. It isn't a total half step off.

and I LOVE gillian Welch. one of the few that I have not seen live that i feel is a MUST

  • This performance seems so obviously to be the same that was included in Time (The Revelator) - why is it that this video is about a half-step higher than the album recording??!

  • They also performed this song along with "My Dear Someone" on the "Down From the Mountain" DVD. That particular performance was done in Nashville prior to release of the movie, "Old Brother Where Art Thou."

  • Wonderful fun song, fabulous musicianship.

  • Down From The Mountain is a must-have DVD. In addition to Gillian and David, I love the Cox family. Check out Billy Bob in the audience.

  • Great post. Love this cut.

  • this is from that "down from the mountain" dvd which was like a documentary of a concert that they put together at the ryman (sp?) auditorium featuring the artists from the soundtrack of "o brother where art thou"

gillian is all over that dvd, if you're a fan its a great buy

  • woohoo...what harmony!!!!

  • Wonderful live clip. Thanks.

  • My favourite of Gillian and David's, Fab!
