hi, awsome job, just wanna know if you'd carried on with the black would it have been as good a quality finish, can you get the same results but in black?
Beautiful. I'm doing that with my Pearl EXR drumkit. 16x16 bass drum out of floor tom, 10 and 13 toms, and a 14" snare. I want a fully natural wood color, that's under the wrap. So, is it necessary to stain the shells? I think that only varnishing them would be enough. I really need the answer, please. Thanks a lot.
@jonovaz Staining them looks great. I did it with my old TAMA snare after I got a 14x8 pork pie. I guess if you want to keep the color really light, that's fine but I would stain them to make it look richer. It's really simple. If not, just polyurethane and complete.
This will save me soo much... Instead of paying 680 for a Ludwig drum set I can get an almost identical Pearl set, or an identical Ludwig set, for $500. The Ludwig set isn't as appealing because I'd have to paint the hoops too.
I recently painted my drums but I have a question. A friend wants me to stain his drums but he already has a stain, much like your's. what should i use to remove it? like should i use an electric sander to remove the paint, or wood stripper? please write back
you did a beautiful job i plan on refinishing my drum shells any tips before i start like any certain stain i should use or sand paper comment back please :)
beautiful job smiley. I like the first black stain and then sanding before the blue stain to give it depth and the final wet sand and polish to get the glassy final coat. I've already sanded my shells, thanks for the vid
very nice, but how did you do it...I dont understand it with so many pics. Im trying to refinish my kit, but cant find any useful info. Any tips man, I just wanna strip the old wrap, and then stain it and have it be nice smooth and glossy, like your kite here. Any tips please.
@ComputerHax1343 : it's (how to) repainting drumshells you crackhead. did you notice that the newspaper and the tools in the video are from the far east. do be so critical.... 100bux you are a yankee :)
@maryou93 you only have to sand polyurethane between coats and it's because the adhesion in polyurethane isn't very strong so you sand to make the coats stick to each other better.
Any1 think it unwise if I wanted to black stain only my innards? Will that B equivilant to eating hair dye?

This is by far one of the best DIY drum refurbishments I've looked at on youtube, I plan on doing my own with a Tama Rockstar Pro Birch very soon.
There are two things I would like to know.
1. Did you sand the original lacquer coating off?
2. What type of clear coat did you put on it, and how was it applied?
PLEASE ANSWER you'll be my saviour! :)

@littlegldgti
1. Sanding by Hand.
2.Oily Urethane Varnish by Brush Paint.
Thank you.

You know, if you don't have the time to go thru staining... but this way is definitely good too.

I hate to be a total bitch, but i bought enamel spray from Ace Hardware in my town...
And no matter how thick the coat is, it still shows the wood grain. I'll post a video when I'm done. I had no idea enamel is translucent.

why do people sand the varnish or laquer every time they apply a coat?
wouldn't the final result be a glossy surface with "scratched" coats of laquer/varnish under it?
