  • he might have to eat his shoe in september 2012

  • Take a look at Hugo and say 3D is a Fad Both Avatar and Hugo use 3D as part of the films artistic direction in storytelling I have seen Hugo in both 2D and 3D and there is a huge diffrence in the fillms look and artistic imersive experence

  • @123allrock yeah but thats only 2 films by 2 great directors can you name anything else thats been better by using 3D ?

  • The good doctor will be right.

  • 3d doesn't work very well imo

  • Comment removed

  • Ive seen these films in 3D

    Gullivers travels (2010)

    Narnia 3 (2010)

Pirates of the Cairbaen 4 (2011)

    Harry Potter DH part 2 ( 2011)

    Thor (2011)

(3D is Useless and Pointless and gives he a headake which lasts the rest of the Day) Mark Kermonde you Rock

  • i saw no 3d effect in toy story 3.

  • @BRm2008 Me neither. and to be honest I found the whole movie rather underwhelming. Can't understand all the great reviews it got. Don't get me wrong. Its a decent little family film, its just a bit overated in my opinion.

  • i think 3D is already on the decline and it has only been 10 months since this prediction.

i actually think that the film in the clip probably did benefit from being in 3D (or at least it looked that way) so i am not a foaming at the mouth anti-3D person, but in general. 3D is a gimmick and i don't want it to stay in the mainstream.

  • i'm sure that 3d will become industry standard, but not in 2 years....one thing is the pricing for replacing ppl's 1080p Flatscreens(or less) and their DVD-Blueray players....its too soon for that IMO..

another thing is the frigging glasses...they're basicly stupid, and they shouldn't have tried to create 3D before they could do it without them.

  • Thing I find is the 3D is hit and miss some films have aspects that look really good in 3D others I think what the hell is 3D about this, Tron had 1 moment that stood out for me, so despite seeing 5 or 6 films in 3D I still don't know if it's worthwhile.

  • problem is if avatar is out in 2 years then there'll be a billion dollar 3D movie at number 1.

  • toy story worked because it was reversed 3D

  • yes IT IS the worst resident evil movie

  • @MarMM13 thank you for agreeing i hated it, i saw wistler (cant spell sorry) and thought one person i want to talk but no,just alice and god shes dull

  • It won't happen Dr Kermode, 3D is here to stay..

  • @grindhouse74 I think he knows more about that tan you.

  • @Regenmacher175 Realy?? So why has all the big studios already invested in many 3D films to come out over the next 3-4 years? And alot of the cinemas all over the world have been converted.. Mark Kermode is a film critic that is all, he expresses his opinion in the films he likes or dislikes, that does not make him an expert in the future of 3D movies...Trust me, 3D is here to stay...

  • @grindhouse74 3D will be gone because most of the 3D films coming out are retrofitted. You heard that Harry Potter 7 part 1 will now be in 2D right? it's that simple. they all say their films in 2012 or later are gonna be in 3D but you can e sure that, as soon as the gimmick's over, they'll change their statements. It's just to go with the flow. 3D will be gone (if not in 2 years) in 3 years from now.

  • @Regenmacher175 Yes i heard that Potter 7 part 1 will be in 2D thats because they don't have time to convert it properly however they will release part 2 in 3D did you know that? Also Titanic and the 6 Star Wars movie will all be converted in due time. All the big directors are imbracing 3D like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, George Lucas and even Quentin Tarantino was toying with the idea of doing the next Kill Bill in 3D. All i'm doing is stating a FACT...

  • can you imagine arthouse films in 3d? no! because it's just for children & for adults who have the mind of a child. even if it is the industry standard in 2 years time it will still be a gimmick in my eyes because that's all it is, it has nothing to do with serious adult high quality film making whatsoever.

  • I saw toy story in 2d and I didnt even realise it was meant to be seen in 3d. And you mentioning about the picture being not as bright and vibrant is interesting because one of the things that struck me when watching toy story 3 in 2d was just how beautiful it all did look. Was this lost someway in 3d?

  • Kermode I hope your right.

  • nintendo are releasing a new hand held which is said to be in 3d without the need for glasses so its only a matter of time before it goes onto the big screen if thats the case I'll reserve an opinion for then but for now 3d is near pointless i will say this i will be watching Saw 3d as it is a film in which bright colour isnt one of its themes so the glasses wont be ruining anything visualy

  • I agree that 3D will be on the decline soon, if only because they're flooding the market with this material--without thinking of story or reason for the technique. It will lose its novelty. I mean, Saw 3D!? If any movie should just go away by now. They ran out of ideas at Saw3, and kept going anyway.

  • I thought Mark was going to 'quit' again for a second there!

  • I would love to see those hands in 3D, but I don't even have the glasses at home.

  • Enough with the 3D, I can't take it. Jaws 3D and F13 in 3D were enough to put me off the format as a kid.

  • whoa! you are brave dude! :)

  • God I hope you're right Mark. I work in a visual fx house. 3d, makes our lives harder, ruins our work (especially conversion) and I feel adds nothing. Instead we should be raising resolution if anything. Until 3d can can be watched without glasses, through your own eyes and with no colour changes and keeping the picture just as sharp, I will never be a believer. If only Avatar had flopped.

  • I've never seen a film in 3D, and in all likelyhood I never will. It doesn't appeal to me in the least.

  • Interesting Proposition. It does seem that people are going a bit gaga over 3D at the moment not just in movies but in games and television. I tried out a 3D television on demo in an electronics shop the other day and I was puzzeled to see the point of it all or what differerence it made. Especially for prices near £1000. I guess we will all have to see. See you in two years Mark.

  • I wanted to see Toy Story in 2D... but Cineworld didn't give me a choice. 3D or nowt.

  • So far I have seen only two 3-D Movies.

AVATAR- because it was an event movie.

PIRANHA 3-D- because it was a fun, trashy throwback, exploitation- cheap Jaws 3D piss take.

BUT I will never watch 3D ever again. The already expensive cinema ticket are £13 a piece, I felt sick- the picture was out of focus, I hate those glasses and Kernode is right. The old 3-D was just a fad as is current 3-D technology.

  • Kermode should promise to eat his shoe.

  • Nice review Doctor :)

  • Why does everyone from the BBC feel they have to constantly wave their hands about in the air? Is it part of their "mission to explain"? Won't us poor plebs understand without the sign language?

  • If 3D is a new standard why isn't Tamara Drewe being given a 3D release? Because as you say 3D is a gimmick that only appeals to the audience for action adventure like the new Resident Evil. I am a fan of the 'video game franchise', I found the 3D an annoying distraction after 10 minutes.

BTW am I the only person who thinks this 3D system doesn't actually work that well?

  • @BettyBoolean NO! Avatar's 3D wasn't anything like Toy Story's and that STILL wasn't good enough.

  • I'm waiting for the revivial of VistaVision.

  • @fieldingmellish44 That was AWESOME!! They only use it for special effects now but I do genuinely think Christopher Nolan will be taking a step in that direction very soon. Have you seen the prints of 'Inception'? They're IMPECCABLE - I've NEVER seen 35mm perform that well before.

  • 3D is living proof of something we've all suspected for a long time; that writers, directors, producers have officially lost the ability to tell a story effectively. It is a cynical gimmick they use to compensate for this, and whatismore, they're expecting you people to pay extra for it. They'll flood every damn cinema with it. The sooner you all wake up and boycott cinema until this wretched, pointless, assinine gimmick is abandoned, the better off cinema will be.

  • @sulijoo I think it's even deeper than that - filmmakers have been forced into this groove of poor storytelling by the 'big guys' for so long that, though they have indeed begun to lift their thumb a bit, we're now left with filmmakers too deprived to know the difference between good and bad.

P.S. Simply boycott 3D screenings. Boycotting cinema will deliver too much damage for them to recover from.

  • 3D allows studios to charge higher prices for film and make more profit. That is the major motivation to have so many films in 3D.

  • @DodgerRiley And to also distance cinema from TV in the same way that Widescreen was introduced.

  • @ehansen3 That all seems like a pack of piss now, James Cameron himself was sticking his big head into the launch of 3D technology for television. The world's all inside-out now.

  • @Raymint I'm sure big Jim only moved towards TV when he failed to corner the film market. As I'm quite sure (apart from the rumoured Del Toro film) only Resident Evil 76 or whatever it's called has used Jim's technology so far haha

  • @ehansen3 He moved their before 'Avatar' was even released! In fact I think it was his warped attempt at promoting his film.

  • @Raymint Haha was this also before he denigrated studios for retro-converting films to 3D while talking about his upcoming Titanic re-release in 3D. The man is warped for sure.

  • @ehansen3 OH YEAH! I remember thinking about that when I read the article. The guy's all over the place. I mean I guess he means well but that's just about it - he hasn't a clue otherwise.

  • it's about to end, but not that soon, after some big und succesfull releases of the two last harry potter movies, tron: legacy, the producers will make even more shitty movies in 3D and that's the point where the 3D dies!

  • 'Everyone' hasn't embraced them Mark; I've not embraced them and look at the comments below.

  • i agree that 3d will decline, as it did time and time before now.

the technology used in these films isn't anything new, just a slightly more refined version of what has been around for nearly 20 years.

go to disney land paris and see michael jackson's thriller in 3d and you'll probably find the quality surpasses most 3d films that have come out in the last few years.

but it'll fizzle out again, like old 80s 3d games as well. short lived.

  • What next??? Windows 3D.......Mac3D... You stick your finger in the air for your mouse and point at the screen!

  • i hope 3D is gone a lot sooner as im getting sick of every movie being in 3D

  • Is it really going to take 2 years?

  • I hate 3-D.

  • Can't wait till 2 years time when you'll be regretting making this video Mark! Only a fool would ignore the inevitability of IMPROVED Digital 3D implementation and less intrusive glasses/projector technology.

Don't expect to be seeing the same 3D we see today in the cinemas of tomorrow.

  • @Foebane72 As long as you buy me dinner first.

  • @LePierre I kinda agree with you. I'm against 3-D films in every possible way, but .... the technology is still very primitive. I hope it gets better and soon enough we can witness the glory of Star Trek 2 and Pirates 4 in the newly wonderful 3-D. As for upcoming films like The Master and the Hobbit, I don't think they'd need to be in 3-D. Only certain films should be in 3-D; the blockbusters. Star Wars may be better in proper 3-D, but I don't think There Will Be Blood would.

  • @LePierre 3D sucks. it is simply a marketing tool to draw more people in. 3D does not determine the brilliance of a film.

  • S.A.T.C 3-D

    the stuff of nightmares

  • if every film is 3D, then where's the attraction?

  • It might be around in two years but only because Hollywood is slow to get the message that something is over.

  • I don't mind 3D, I can take it or leave it. Avatar in 3D I thought was good, but I hated Clash of the Titans in 3D. Is this because of the quality of the films or quality of the 3D?

Filmmakers should know that the strength of a film is in convincing and immersive stories, excellent acting and excellent directing. Inception is a film that marries great acting with top special effects. Clash of the Titans is a film that is dire in all aspects except for some decent effects.

  • Unfortunately, it will be a standard :(

    Money rules.

Hopefully there will be a v2 or something with vivid strong colors and lots of light.

  • Lucky it will be in September, the world will be over in December so it won't really matter anyway.

  • No more 3D!!! I am sick of it. As someone who wears glasses, it makes my eyes become strained, they're somewhat uncomfortable, 30% color loss (I mean come on!!) and it's just unnecesary. Although I thought Avatar and How to Tame your dragon worked well in 3D, I'm getting tired of it.

  • Inception made a good amount of money in return,

a film that had the potential to be in 3D yet it was'nt. Could it have made more given the change, possibly but then again it's the sort of thing you go and see to give your brain a work out, not your eyes.

Though it was pretty too :D

  • Indeed. Fuck 3D

  • I agree with Kermode's assessment, but not for his reasons.

I do not think that 3D increases tickets sales across the board.

It costs more to make a 3D film than a 2D film.

So, a slim increase in sales meets a fat increase in cost.

    ...

Hollywood is a business, and lower margin is bad for business.

That's why 3D will die off as anything but an occasional novelty.

  • Ever since Avatar, people have been going to see films in 3D less and less. Actually, I don't mind one 3D film once and while coming out like Avatar or the upcoming Tron: Legacy; I like the idea of them as events. But not every film has to be in 3D. Not by a long shot.

  • People will miss it when it's gone.

Technically, you probably get a better viewing experience in a cinema than at a drive-thru but man I wish drive-thrus were still around. Same case IMO.

  • The only 3D that really hit the mark for me was Captain EO at Disneyworld.

Alll the new 3D films just look like very flat 2d images stacked on multiple layers. This just gives off a wierd & unrealistic fuzzy image and a woozy headachey feeling in the old brainium.

  • I don't like 3D, but I have a sad feeling it might be around for the long haul this time. Not particularly because of cinema... but because of the way they're targeting homes now. 3D TV's are here and here to stay (annoyingly) and with Sony pushing it hard with their range of said TV's AND their Sony PS3 (which I am a big fan and avid user of)... we might have to endure it for quite some time. I just hope it remains an option rather than a necessity.

  • The decline of 3D is definitively something kermode wants to happen. I didn't think it was something he actually thought was going to happen.

People want crappy movies like avatar in 3D. The money it made proves this.

  • Stop me if you've heard this one, but.

If you want to watch a regular movie in 3D, close one eye.

  • I agree with the good Dr about 3D.

But have you considered this, that unless a regular film is made with a camera with a very large F stop the movie WILL be in (close to) 3D. This is because there will be areas of differing focus. Our brains interpret these areas such that the greater the difference in out of focus, the greater the distance between them.

Also, size differences, perspective, etc. give distance clues.

  • it'll be certain types of films. most of your favourite genres will prob be best in 2d

  • He's right. you can't fool the audience forever - this has been a crappy development in film technology and people are going to get bored with it sooner than you'd think. of course if a better 3D tech comes along in the meantime - one that doesn't drain half the colour and brightness out of the picture - then things may turn out differently...

  • Although I do agree that 3d doesn't add anything to film, apart from dimming the brightness and the occasional headache, it must be said that it is an semi-effective way of combatting piracy.

With the rise of downloading movies, it's nice to know that if you want to watch a 3D movie, then the only place you can do that is in the cinema.

  • @oliverlester

This is not the case. There are lots of 3D TV's out there. Obviously the pirates will have to wait for the 3D movie release, but that was also the case with high quality video content.

  • Id love to see 'Dial M for Murder' in 3D at the cinema, they should do screenings of old 3D films.

  • Careful Mark - you have to account for all the movies that are being Green lit in 2010 for 3D release in 2012. I agree there will be a decline, but by 2012 we're likely to see that decline in movies being green lit. The theaters might still be packed with 3D movies that were green lit in the current climate! So I'd say it'll be 2013 before we see this fad drop of the edge of a cliff.

It'll be interesting to see how Avatar 2 is marketed once people get sick of this tosh.

  • I completely agree. I am in the industry, in fact i am selling 3D technology, but as far as i am concerned, in my last 15 years in manufacture this is the most expensive distraction I have seen. It will last in industry (architecture, oil and gas etc) but for the media market it currently only serves to drive new TV box sales.

  • is there a shitter film franchise than resident evil?

  • I wonder what Mark thinks of the new that his old chum Guillermo del Toro has announced his directional project as being 'At the Mountains of Madness' which is going to be in 3-D

  • @owdl114 Appologies for how poorly written this comment is. Should be 'News' instead of 'New' and there should be a 'Next' in there. Sorry again.

  • Mark is completely wrong here. Within a year every new large TV will have 3D capability and we are soon gonna have an explosion of 3D video games. Its here to stay.

  • @Jellyform

Who is buying it? That's my question. Just two years ago the industry was pushing HD tv. People wasted thousands of dollars on big ugly hd televisions. You really think that they are going to be eager to go out and buy a brand new thousand dollar 3d tv? With what money? There's a recession on if you recollect.

3d videogames might catch on, in the handheld market, but I don't see any serious consumer interest in the console market.

  • Mark, I hope to GOD you're right about that! You're the ONLY film critic I actually respect, I may disagree with you quite a bit, but you I respect the ever livin' shite outta you. 3D is a pain !!

  • Thank god for some common sense here. Films like Avatar put everything else to one side just to embrace the 3D effects, and it's even worse when films tack the effects on as an afterthought. I hope it does die out, even though TV makers like Sony seem determined to put it in every single screen they make now...

  • If it is the standard in Sept 2012... according to Roland Emmerich, we'll only have a few more months to suffer through anyways... ;)
