I had this done to both of my ears about 14 years ago and it went great....I have a certain amount of hearing loss in both ears from the damage prior to the surgeries but since then I have had wayyyy less ear infections...I used to get them constantly wich is why my eardrums were bad and needed this surgery. It wasnt painful but the stuff they pack your ear with drives you crazy because when it starts to heal it itches as the packing runs out!
I had this done 22 years ago (holy crap) I went from no in ear hearing (although I could 'hear' through the vibrations of the bones behind my ear) to have 30% residual hearing after surgery.
I had a rupture and complete loss of the ear drum 27 years ago, and we tried various things, to no avail. The surgery was successful, and as I have had hearing loss for closing in on 30 years, don't notice it at all unless I have a cold. I do only talk on the phone on my 'good' ear though.
may possibly getting this procedure done to my left ear....watching this probably didn't help the decision process has anyone had great success with this surgery? i've been even more nervous to get it cuz A: i've got tinnitus (ringing in ears...prob caused by the hole) and B: i'm deaf in my right ear (so they'd be operating on the ONLY good ear i have and if something went wrong...) so if anyone has had this procedure done can you tell me if you've had great success with it?
This is soooo epic to watch! I just hope I will never have to get this surgery. I've gotten a hole in my ear drum before, and the last time it happened to me, I was in intense pain.
So far I've had two of these done on my left ear to repair perforations, and lemme say it's really weird watching this and knowing this was my ear at one point. Neither surgery hurt afterward, I just couldn't hear well because of all the packing. My hearing is just about normal now though.
Funny thing is, the doctor who operated on me spent like 20 yrs operating on my dads ears, so he had a lot of time to work on this procedure. Haha.
I'm having mine done on my right ear in the middle of May. The hole in my ear drum is about 50% of the entire thing. My tiny ear bones are also disconnected from one another and corroded. So I will be getting prosthetic ossicles in place of those as well. I'm not too concerned about improving my hearing, I'm ok with getting a hearing aid if I have to, I just don't wanna keep getting ear infections. I've lived w/this for a long time, I'm used to not being able to hear much outta my right ear.
To be honest, I'm glad I'm getting a tympanoplasty. I've had a perforation in my ear for years, and of course, going underwater is a pain, literally, so I'm getting it done. Whether it takes or not, it's a %50 better chance of having a new eardrum than not getting it done, right? :) I hope I get a general anesthetic instead of local, I'd probably freak out being awake for it.
@ImmyMacKay hey man,did you took the operation? how does it feel? im having it in a couple of weeks...im nervous..did your ear hung after the surgery?i have a chronic perforation in both ears when i was a child and now im 23..i have an echo in my right ear..how did it go for u?are you listening better after the surgery?
@ImmyMacKay I don't go underwater PERIOD. I'm no stranger to getting ear infections, and water, it seems to always give me swimmers ear. I know how it feels to live with a perforated ear drum for many years, and if I have to get a hearing aid even after the operation, well, that's ok...it's better than getting infection after infection. My ear bones are also not attached to one another, so I'm getting those repaired as well. I'm so scared, never had anything like this done b4.
I'm having this procedure done in April. Can anyone tell me, the drilling at the beginning, is that the removal of the piece to be grafted over the hole?
@LaRyanita I had this done 4 wks ago. I had chronic ear infections. If I had a choice I would have elected not to have it done. I'm now 4 wks post surgery for the first 2 weeks I had a really bad headache which they insisted was not from the surgery. Now 4 wks post surgery I have no hearing in my right hear...and there is bloody drainage...which I'm assuming means the draft did not take.
@rangertab21 I just had this done...4 DAYS ago. I'm having bloody/watery discharge from it and the doctor said that that's normal for a couple weeks. It doesn't mean it didn't take. The whole no hearing thing...not sure about. lol Hope it get's better.
They take a piece of ear tissue out of your ear and put it on the eardrum to make it heal. I have had a single tempanoplasty and a double tempanoplasty and none of them were succesfull and now i have a permanent broken eardrum.
no it doesn't hurt but the reason it didn't work for me was that I get ear infections all of the time so it just blew out the tissue...And yes my hearing is noticeably worse..On a scale of 1-10 my hearing is probably about a 4 to a 6.And whenever I go into water i have to wear an earplug to keep water from getting into the ear otherwise I get an ear infection. But all of that wasn't from the surgery it was from my ear being screwed up before hand..It was just an unsuccessful operation.
Just had this surgery 3 days ago!
