Certainly. Take a right at the first roundabout after you leave the M18 motorway onto the N19 heading towards towards Shannon airport and town (signpost for Newmarket-on-Fergus). Immediately, you will come to another roundabout. Take the second exit from this roundabout following the signpost for Shannon Aerospace. Go past the end of RWY 24 and take a left into the Shannon Aerospace anf another left almost immediately. You will see the car park at the threshold to RWY 24. Enjoy!
There is a two houses on the right hand side very close to the runway. This video was shot from the car park. The road continues through the car park inside the airport perimeter fence so it is closed to the public. There is a large gate at the far end of the carpark separating it from the airside. There is another spot at the end of RWY 06 but you rarely get to see much as RWY 24 is more often than not the active runway.
@weeminnie it's Obvious that you have the mind of a child with a comment like that, just whish you could say it to my face, did you open your blue card eye's and read my comment......IDIOT!
They are indeed. From what I remember, this video was made the Saturday before the Salthill Airshow the last time it was held. The Thunderbirds were performing so I presume that the C17 Globemasters were there as support. They were based at SNN as the runway at GWY would not be able to cope with such a large aircraft.
I was there when my BA flight got deviated to shannon because of snow storm. My original flight was mexico city to london. I stayed in the auburn lodge in the town of ennis.
Every airport is open to a terrorist attack and anyone who thinks that if terrorists couldn't get through standard airport security screening any any airport of their choosing is in complete denial about how the world works. Anyways, why are you picking on me over this? I simply love planes and SNN is my local airport. It is a great airport for spotting unusual aircraft so that is why I make videos and post them here.
Have a good trip. I'll be heading to the US later in the summer myself from SNN but I will be glying with CO, who I must say are also a fantastic airline. Definitely the best of the US carriers I've flown with.
Was it easy to get ATC on the sca'nner?....Aer Arann are going to operate Irish internal flights now using the Aer Lingus livery, marked as 'Aer Lingus Regional'.....i really hope we don't lose our national flag carrier....it would be a SHAME......with all the shit going on in this small nation of ours....we need some semi-big international airline to make Shannon a hub for Transatlantic flights to help us keep Shannon OPEN....i mean who likes travelling to Dublin from the western seaboard??..nil
Too bad Aer Lingus doesn't make the trip to Toronto, Canada. It's heavily populated with immigrants from Ireland and this would be my airline of choice when going to visit my family in Dublin.
Geeez, this argument is a bit silly, dont us think? Dublin is not the worst airport i have been in but needs to be improved which in fairness, DAA is currenty doing. Quite frankly I don't think any airport is great to be
I know they are doing their best and yes, it is starting to show. This time next year, Dublin will have one of the best airports going. Right now and for the last few years, it is definitely the worst airport I've ever been through. I've never seen such a disorganized maze of corridors in any building I've been in and I'm not just talking about airports. I worked as a structural engineer for 3 years so I know a badly designed building when I see one.
ok guys, Lets end this arguement Cork and shannon is for flying the boggers, dublin is for the southeast, tony go fly 4m knock and waterford if u wana c prefabs. dublin is our chief airport and busiest thats why t2 is being built. now drop it
And you wonder why the rest of the country doesn't like ye with an attitude like that. No on is questioning the status of DUB as being the countries primary airport and so it should be. As far as prefabs go, one of the DUB piers is a giant prefrab and you sir, cannot deny that as a fact. NOC just got a new terminal so I presume that all the prefabs have been removed at this point.
P.S. The last time I looked at a map, Dublin is in the East, not the Southeast. If fact, the Southeast is as close to ORK as it is for DUB. As for dropping it, I didn't start this argument. I just uploaded videos I took at SNN for everyone to see and someone attacked me. I am just defending myself the same way anyone would when they are attacked.
Dublin is better than both of them. Dublin's Europe's 12th busiest airport, Cork is Europe's 96th busiest airport, and Shannon is Europe's 99th busiest airport. See? Dublin by far!
No one is arguing that DUB isn't bigger or more important but you cannot seriously say that in its current state that it is a better airport. Maybe when T2 and the new runway opens but not now. It is more like a rundown subway station than an airport. Dirty, dingy, overcrowded and an all round unpleasant place to be. Don't take anything personally, but I would gladly make 5 or six connections and originate/terminate at SNN than fly direct from DUB.
You make it sound so bad. It's actually not! Ok Shannon and Cork may be nicer but seriously, it's not that bad! It migh have it's ups and downs but it is nothing like what you called it!
It is exactly the way I describe it. It is hands down the worst airport I've ever travelled through. As I say, I expect a huge improvement when T2 opens but as it stands, no airport should have a giant prefab as a pier. I don't blame the DAA as such and I do know that the SNN lobby did their very best to stunt DUB but they are only protecting their patch which is the role of any local interest group. It is the people who listened to them who are really to blame.
Oh ok well then It's just my opinion and that's yours. I'm not going to start an arguement when everyone has a different opinion which is the simple answer.
ok people live there duh but there's no need to get this worked up about it.just5 for the people who were fighting about cork airport being better han limerick.
i didn't say cork airport is better than shannon you idiot.if aer lingus did introduce long haul flights from cork it would really bring more money to the south.oh and whats in cork that isn't in shannon? only cork city, blarney castle, kinsale and a few other places.also it would be an excellent decision since it has a big city near the airport unlike shannon which is in the middle of nowhere.
you really don't get it do you.cork airport is located next to cork city (which is the republics second bigest city and has a lot of amenities) which is located next to blarney (one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world).and did u know that shannon isn't even a hub for aer lingus? our national airline? case closed.
You do realise that Cork does not have a turning circle capable of accomodating an A330 without overstretching the nose gear. As for Cork taking more passengers, explain exactly why that automatically means Cork should get all of EI's TA flights that currently operate to Shannon?
for gods sake,i didn't say cork should get ALL of EI's flights. and obviously cork's runway would need enlarging.i just think that aer lingus should consider starting long haul flights from cork since it now takes more passengers per year than shannon.its just an idea.
The compulsory SNN stopover is gone now but I honestly can't be 100% certain either way. One thing is for sure, pity is a feeling EI definitely don't have for SNN. EI are a fully private company now, which means their sole purpose is to make money for their shareholders so I doubt they would be running services for pity's sake but rather for profit's sake. Just my opinion though
I would have loved to get a go on the EI MD 11. The MD 11 is one of my favorite AC. I would also have loved to get a go on the EI L1011 they had leased for a while to fly to EWR.
Sweet! Last time I flew from Shannon, it was EI 111 using an MD-11 a/c in September 1999. The other times were an A320 from GLA to DUB, Bae 146 from LHR to SNN, and A330's from DUB to JFK and DUB to ORD.
i work in shannon airport and loosing one of the london flights is a downfall but the airport is managing like it always had with it, we still have all the trans-atlantic flights and europe and ofcoarse the soldiers aswell, the summer sees atleast 5 planes at the gates at anyone time
Glad to hear SNN is still doing well despite loosing the London route. I frequently fly TA from SNN myself so I would be very disappointed if they were to go. At least, EI have committed to the Winter 08/09 period so one can only assume that summer 09 is reasonably safe so hopefully, that will get us past the initial OS shock.
I have a question for anyone who wants to awnser it did aer lingus stop all flight to shannon or just shannon-lhr? if someone could awnser that would be great
just seen the news about the last Aer Lingus service to Heathrow. quite sad actually.although i am delighted they now fly from Belfast I really hoped they would re-consider and still continue with the route. I think they will reinstate it at some stage in the future when they realise it was a mistake. apparantly load factors for belfast are only 35% on the route so far as opposed to 80% on the SNN-LHR service. they may regret the decision yet.
Well it is the availability of slots at LHR that is the issue so hopefully when LHR converts to mixed mode then maybe a new carrier will open up SNN-LHR. I doubt EI will be expanding SNN services anytime in the near future.
God the good aul Ei doing the Stop in shannon to pick up the bogger, god i'm sure my friends at Ei love stopping in shannon( ehhh NOT ) i love it when passengers ask why the plane is so dirty) cracks me up all the time
Yes, it was in fact 23rd of June 2007 & the flight you see in the video is Flight # EI111 so that normally departs abour 14:00. Were you on that flight?
Personally, I am just happy that Aer Lingus is now flying a route from IAD into Ireland again, so I can fly non stop. Sad partis it flies into DUB. Where I am going most of the time, Galway and Clare, it was nice to fly into SNN. I love that airport. I will miss not flying into there next week.
The North and North West of Ireland are the most geographically isolated parts of Europe. In SNN you have loads of trans-atlantic flights and Ryanair has you well connected with the UK and Europe so stop you're whinging. We're delighted that the shamrock is coming to Belfast.Maybe if you had more people using the service then Aer Lingus wouldn't have pulled the service out. And if it wasnt for the american military you'd be closed at this stage now.
Were not whinging about BFS getting a LHR serice. What we are unhappy about is the fact that all four slots for the BFS-LHR service were taken from SNN rather than taking say one from SNN, one from ORK & two from DUB. By the way, EI carries over 300,000 pax a year on the SNN-LHR accounting for 10% of the total annual SNN pax & DM has admitted that the loads were good & the routes were profitable so you can hardly accuse us of not using the service.
i'm quite confused, why there's an airport like SNN in that region? Okay, i know there's Luimneach nearby, but If I am god, I would swap it with ORK since Cork is the second biggest city in Eire and that would provide big market for an airport like SNN. For me, it was totally misplaced.
SNN was originally built way back in 1936 & opened as an airport in 1942 back in the day when transatlantic flights were still operated by turboprops that just didn't have the range to fly non-stop from the US to mainland Europe. Hence, SNN was built where it is purely because its location was a good place to land & refuel.
Nice to see the US Air Force there in the background.

i'm quite confused, why there's an airport like SNN in that region? Okay, i know there's Luimneach nearby, but If I am god, I would swap it with ORK since Cork is the second biggest city in Eire and that would provide big market for an airport like SNN. For me, it was totally misplaced.

SNN was originally built way back in 1936 & opened as an airport in 1942 back in the day when transatlantic flights were still operated by turboprops that just didn't have the range to fly non-stop from the US to mainland Europe. Hence, SNN was built where it is purely because its location was a good place to land & refuel.

That won't achieve anything other than further jeopardising EI's future at SNN.
