If you have Vista you won't get the pulldown for Stereo Mix. Do this:

In Audacity, click Edit, Preferences, Audio I/O. (you might have to arrow-left to see Audio I/O). In Recording click Audio Sound Mapper. Make sure "Software Playthrough" is unchecked or you'll get echo.

In your computer's Realtek you must have "Stereo Mix" working. Right click on the speaker icon on your bottom tool bar. Click Recording Devices, disable everything except Stereo Mix and enable it.

audacity is so awesome i use it to record music off of sites and then being able to do whatever you want with it it is just so cool instead of downloading everything and risking the computer for viruses and spyware and getting crappy quality songs and being able to record music that you wont find on a download is so sweet and also being able to find out that knowing that the song is high quality or not before you record is real cool
