PK is probably the Japanese translation. 

Here, the people who did the translation probably needed the room.

All Offensive PSI was all ways called PK, but the translation of EarthBound made a screwup. Ness and Lucas in SSBB always call out their Offensive PSI attacks "PK (Freeze,Flash,Fire & Thunder).

Seriously though, just like EB there's two versions of the rom. One has the antipiracy methods crippled. You got the one that didn't have them crippled and fell afoul of the Antipiracy.

There are some Earthbound Zero cartridges for the NES that were never released, but can be found on Ebay.
