Cam Fella was a great horse. No doubt. And he was very determined. But in this case, Its Fritz spit the bit out and quit. Ideal Tanner passed him like he was tied to a tree. Still a great race and memory, but Cam Fella didnt race that great. He beat a horse who made his move too early. Crap drive on Its Fritz. He should have stayed in the pocket much longer.

Yes, It's Fritz spit it, but 1:25 2/5 was a very fast three-quarters in 1983, something would change just a year or so later with improvements in equipment that have continually made the sport much faster over time.
I hear what you are saying about Pat Crowe, but how do you knock someone that won 28 in a row! I had the honor of speaking with Stan Bergstein, and when I asked him who was the greatest ( about three years ago) he did not hesitate and said "Bret Hanover". I'm sure he was being honest about it because this man had seen nearly every horse up the point that I askes him. BTW, I do not put much into times,since the BIG M made the mile oval into asphalt in 1985 and 20,000 claimers ran 1:52 miles.
@funshipM174 That has more to do with MAJOR equipment improvements than the racing surface, though banking the turns also contributed some to the fast times we saw in later years.

I was at that race. The Big M was giving each patron a button of their choice of which horse you thought would win. I had my Cam Fella button,ut even better was the $42.00 Exacta that I ad when Ideal Tanner finished second!
i still think The Beach may be the best of all time but Cam was my hero....different era of course but he was the horse that got me hooked on the sport....
@funshipM174 Neither horse had time(understandable) over Cam BUT~BOTH were, in my opinion as good as Cam(Breeding)~BUT 28 straight with Pat friggin Crowe?!?! ps Nihilator+,tons of Hanover and Revonah(Hanover backwards) offspring from Niatross and Bret Hanover. I have seen all three at Roosevelt Raceway MANY time. I am going to go ahead and sort of agree with you.2 Exquisite horses.
