in the great war the germans called them "ladies from hell" im proud to say that my granddad fought with the royal newfoundland regiment at vimy ridge..as i recall though the continentals gave the black watch a bloody nose during the battle of long island ..but probably one of the most famous regiments in the world..

@theolliepotter "and in the 18th Century" If you are talking about the 18thC then can you give figures for how many Welsh and Englishmen were in the regiment at that time? I suspect it would be hardly any, if any at all. At first the regiment AFAIK was made up mostly of Highlanders though it is a long time now since they recruited the bulk from the HIghlands. So yes it is a regiment of the British Army but that doesn't mean it is in any way an English regiment. It is and has always been Scots.

As I said AFAIK the regiment was almost exclusively Highlanders in the 18thC never mind Scots in general. And certainly there wouldn't have been many English or Welsh in the lines - if any at all!

I presume you're once of the insane worshipers of the denomination of the antisemitic Mel Gibson and a supporter of the SNP. Can you speak Gaelic too? Nah, didn't think so, you're the same as most of the SNP then. Funnily enough, there is nothing in the video description to say that the Black Watch was not a Scottish Regiment, so what's the harsh language for?

Well, yes and no. They were originally raised by the English to keep the highland clans under control. As a result they were despised by their fellow Scots and earned the nickname of The Black Watch.

say what you like about the british but we didnt give in until we were at the last city, with no ammo, surrounded by thousands of enemies, blocked from reinforcements by the sea and hundreds of nautical miles from our home.
