APUs are surely not built the way full size turboshafts are. They are designed for a precise number of startups of a certain duration. Though, if you only run at a fraction of its original power, it is not a safety concern. Of course, pulling 160 hp out of a t62 will cause short term failure. But with less than 100 hp, you are good to go. Anyway, no purpose built turbines of such size exist. Got to stick to what is available, just ensure it is well over-dimensioned.
I suggest you to take that turbine off and replace it with a real aircraft engine if you really want to fly the heli. APUs are not designed as prime mover engines.
@Aviator168 APU's are real aircraft engines and the aircraft they are in rely on them as much as their "mover engines". What power takeoff turbine is built currently to power a ultralight heli? I say right on 75LS1vega anytime your ready to hand over the stick I'll take that thing for a hover
@TheMaxxyasgar Sorry mate. APUs are not real aircraft engines. You might get a way with in a heli. Anyway, if you want to read more. h***ttp://home.provide.net/~pratt1/ambuilt/turbine.htm
Wow! Amazing! I guess, there is no throttle correlator. Maybe, you could try getting 'light on the skids' to feel a neutralize for your yaw moment and feel a neutralize your cyclic before lifting into hover. ... I bet that is real tricky without a throttle correlator. GREAT WORK!!!
too much power to be a Ultralight in the US but you know what he has some amazing control over that.
Very very smooth i have watch some videos of these things almost shaking themselves apart. I would say the tail boom mount could be a bit strong saw a bit too much shaking when torq started to be transfered to it
yes a hair cut could be on the cards , maby with a body , a little larger in the frame . tail rotor blades are to big so its very twitchy to hover .and two seats , and a little bigger it may go into production . but very good attempt it sounds the part , watching him in the cycle ,the heli is very tender .
there are people who have been flying helicopters for 40 years, this is how you stay safe, practice at low altitudes in varying conditions, make it part of you.
any turbine is 1000X more reliable than a piston engine

@Aviator168 APUs have been used in rotorway helicopters for years with a flawless record. I suggest you study before you flap.

It looks like the designer didn't take gyroscopic precession into account on this design.

Wow, ... most awesome! Congratulations - great job! What does it weigh? Can it be a ultralight (254 pounds) ?

Great little chopper but the engine can be seen to overheat during satrt up due to the rotor inertia load, should have a clutch!

This is cool looks like you were fighting some wind and having fun.
This doesn't look like the original A/W-95 plans with the belt driven tail rotor.
What is the solar T62-16b75 off of.
How did the turbine hook up to the main driven shaft(through a gear reduction box).
Do you have any close up pics of your A/W 95
aw95goodtimes 1 year ago
@aw95goodtimes
The Solar turbine was an APU for smaller jets like Lear, etc. They also made APU's for military applications like the Chinnook.
