some of them are clever, i'm sure it was a roar in 1919. one i don't get. "japanese scientist says he can grow wings on men, he starts july 1st - grape juice junction." huh?!
This was the equivalent of a newspaper editorial cartoon/topical satirical column for movie theaters; it touches on labor leader [and presdiential candidiate] Eugene V. Debs about to serve a prison term; the coming "Prohibition" era [it lasted 13 years] which gave rise to illegal "hooch" and bootlegging and racketeering enterprises (especially in Chicago); the defeat of the U.S. joining the "League Of Nations" by Republican senators against President Wilson and his visions of world peace, etc.
I was trying to figure out the year from events mentioned during the film, then it clearly says "1919" at the end. OK then!
Most of the headlines are pretty much the same type of cracks that are now heard in the opening monologues of late night tv talk shows. That style of US topical humor seems to go back a ways!
Thanks for posting this interesting bit of history.

The United States should have joined the League of Nations. I don't know if that would have impacted what happened in the 1930s,however.
