The two shorter ropes only serve the purpose of making it look like there are three ropes tied by 2 knots... you can see this pretty well at 2:14.

Good instructional for this rope trick. This trick is often sold as the partiotic ropes or rainbow ropes at magic stores. Were 3 different color ropes become one solid rope colored all three of the colors. If you like this trick I recommend you get one of the patriotic ropes or rainbvow ropes. It is pretty cheap online. Great for entertaining children and it fools adults too. good luck.
