i saw the musical with this song in it. yes, i do admit it was a LITTLE scary, but it did get the message and it was my favorite part of the musical. so sad it is out of the musical now :(

This is really good music-wise, but I can understand why it was taken out. I've never seen the play, so I can't picture the scene. However, this song freaks me out, and I'm not exactly a little kid. "Children who refuse to learn will not return," is kind of nightmare fuel-ish to me.

@imafan25 the reason y they put it in was to scare the Banks children not scare the kids in audience so much that that's all they'll remember. I agree it is a loss but Playing the Game is still good

@imafan25. It's one thing to include scary segments in something that parents will expect to be scary. However, if you don't do research on the play itself and take your four year old to see Mary Poppins as their first Broadway show, you will be quite surprised, shocked, and upset to have a segment of nightmare-fuel right in the middle that forces you to leave when your kid won't go back after intermission because they are scared of the giant toys.

Oh my gosh! A group at regional acting competion last year performed this... SO FREAKY!!!!!!!!!!! I understand why they took it out. It's disney... People expect it to be child friendly. But this is a flipping amazing song!

@emopinata12345 I doubt they'll ever release the rights. The production in New York and On Tour sells out nightly. But I would love to see an amateur company do it. Hope they release the rights but I seriously doubt it.

@theaterlover20 In the UK, the shows rights have been signed to Josef Weinberger, who licence a lot of shows that MTI have in the US... won't be long till their available over here. Am going to do it as soon as they're released!!

I adore this number, and can't believe they've removed it from English versions.

They've kept this number in the 2010 Copenhagen production at Det Ny Teater, however, and I absolutely loved it!!

They took Temper Temper out because fucking parents were complaining that it was too scary for kids and demanded to have it removed.

They DID warn them about this and obviously they didn't listen!

I was so angry too!! That's what made it great because it was close to the original story by PL Travers!

"Temper, Temper" is more frightening for children because they can relate to Jane and Michael. Whereas with "Brimstone and Treacle" it's not the case.

However I think this song should have stayed. If the child audience understand what's going on it will teach them a lesson. If they see someone getting punished for something when they're young it will cause them to not want the same thing to happen to them. Thus reminding them to hold their 'temper'
