I don't care who was the first punk band. But what most people don't think about is what punk really is. It isn't fast guitars and leather jackets it's about the message. The sex pistols were punk, they didn't have crazy fast guitars, but they were punk. Why? Because of the message in their songs. Ramones, they were punk, they had songs where they had political messages such as bonzo goes to bitburg (my brain is hangin upside down). And this is gonna piss people but, but green day is punk.

actually in a recent interview he said he considers themselves punk as a basis, but not in any pure sense and all of his influences come through, so of course purists are going to be mad, but they don't claim to be fully punk. i agree with the rest of ur comments tho.
