I have been shipwrecked and the first rule is to stay with the ship.The ship was aground and was stable,not going to sink and is probably there now.If you are going to venture ashore you must go ASAP as hyperthermia and lack of food reduces your strength.There is always plenty of rope on a ship like this and the first strong swimmer who decides to have a go always takes a rope with him and the rest go along the rope.Sadly there was no-one with knowledge aboard.

It sounds counter-intuitive but there is stong evidence that teaching people to swim increases their risks of drowning, because swimmers go in the water, while non-swimmers do not. I would stay on board until the last possible minute. In this case, the ship is being driven on shore by strong winds onto sand. It is unlikely to be ripped apart for at least a week. My priority would be 1) obtain shelter on the bridge 2) drinking water 3) food 4) flag or other signal-device 5) await rescue.

We saw one person begin floating from the ship towards us and only the life jacket landed up on the shore. I looked into the eyes of the survivors, and no, they were not "crazy monkeys". Regardless of who the ship belonged to, what nationality the crew was how different you "think" you would have handled the situation, human lives were lost and that is the sadest end to any event.
