  • Swedish Military!

  • hey, this would make a goood snow fort!!! lol

  • Im just messin with ya good Job!

  • I built a better one in my backyard.

  • love the way you say you'll wait to be be rescued when theres a house at the bottom of the hill ;) Nah awsome vid :P

  • Looks brilliant! would love to try this with our scouts :)

  • Good sensible video. I really liked the sticks trick! I'll be using that one. One thing you probably know: the smoother the inner curve of the roof, the less chance of water dripping from points and down onto your sleeping area. Oh, but I see someone else commented on that. Do you find the air vents *below* the bed area are sufficient? I've always put at least one overhead.

  • I am going to be going out camping next week and me and my mate are going to be building one of these. Any tips for snow removal when digging?

  • what u could also do is prop up some of those branches against the door, so all the heat doesnt get out, other than that great vid

  • @sneakyninja273

    Cheers bud, appreciate that! ;-)

  • best vid i've seen!!!!!

  • COME ON THE IRISH

  • i tryed doing this in mud, it is harder than i thought! im using the same shovel as you, any suggestions?

  • @TheGeraint123

Mud would be a tad heavy and takes a long while to set. Try looking up an igloo design online where they go up in a spiral, but leave loads of time for each few feet to harden. ;)

  • @irishventurer Ok, thanks for your help :)

  • @TheGeraint123 don't use mud. XD

  • Respond to this video... so, were were you are holes? they were at least somewere above you, right? ive heard that you need one above you so your breathe can escape, instead of killing you...

  • Thank you for sharing. Excellent video...the real deal.

  • roof as smooth as possible so you don't get ice crystals that form from your breath and then melt and drip on you making you wet and thereby cold during the night

  • @maninred007 very true, roof needs to much smoother to stop dripping and also helps strenthen it. Great video tho , good work lads!

  • where is ur emergencie whole??

and why is the snow no pattern at ur ciling on the inside

water is running down there tipping down on u making u wet and cold

  • @maninred007 also very true , needs an air hole / vent . very important!

  • @rossdburke You got it having a hole is important, ask your mom. . .

  • If I could add one thing is to have the roof as smooth as possible so you don't get ice crystals that form from your breath and then melt and drip on you making you wet and thereby cold during the night. Also arc your roof into a dome shape as best you can for if you do get condensation it will run down the sides of the walls instead of dripping down onto your face. Great video over all and you guys did a bang up job. Cheers

  • Thanks soo much! very helpful. cant wait till the winter to try it myself. :D

  • If I could ask, why did you put the branches inside the shelter?

  • @ShakedXsin The branches are to insulate me from the ice/snow shelf that i was sleeping on. It would not be very comfortable sleeping on the cold ice! I also had a sleeping pad over the branches for some more comfort. Thanks for the question!!! ;)

  • Couldnt it collapse?

  • @airman355 : Hey, thanks for the question! Nope, it would not collapse if you use the method of using the sticks to ensure you do not hollow it out too much. After one night it freezes solid anyway!! If you live in an area with big snowfalls, you should try it. Enjoy!! Adrian

  • @irishventurer Wow thanks man, sounds sweet! Could save a life! Ima try it next snowfall!

  • I also use this type of shelter! I think you will be able to inspire many more people to make this also!

  • very cool!

  • how long dose that take to make?

  • i am from sweden :)

  • Comment removed

  • That was really good I'm 13 and in Bandon Scouts i.e 3rd Cork

and I have to say the shelter looks awesome well prepared

  • Dude this is what I do! I didn't look at this vid but i found it, and it is EXACTLY what I do...I'm 12 :) Thanks haha

  • Well done bud! Keep it up!

    Adrian

  • @Mattoo0oo0oo i do it too lol

  • im trying to me same beside me house

  • Cool!! Best of luck! Let me know how u get on?!

    Adrian

  • Great video!!! Good points

  • Cheers bud!!

    Adrian

  • Great shelter guys but one small complaint. At around 0:40 you took your gloves off and chucked them on the ground, followed by your rucksack. In a real situation it would be safer to stuff your gloves inside your jacket and pin your rucksack to the ground with an axe or pole. If these went skittering off down the hill it could be disastrous.

  • Good point and fair comment. Cheers buddy.

    Adrian

  • on 8:49 it seems like a thick chemtrail hanging up there in the sky!

  • excellent guys! lol reminds me of something id do as a kid. however im older now and big into the outdoors. building shelters is an important skill to have if venturing into the great outdoors. this shelter is simple, warm and all around quality. probably better than something you would be able to build in the woods. keep spreading the knowledge.

  • Cheers for the cool commet buddy!!

    Adrian

  • the heat is supposed to happen

  • True, but hard to believe till you experience it!! Thanks for the commet.

    Adrian

  • 5 Stars from eastern usa. Well done!

  • Cheers, thanks for that!

    Adrian

  • Great shelter good job, One question though. Is there any chance of a cave in while you are sleeping?

  • Not if you pack the snow hard and follow the stick system shown in the video. There is a risk of cave in if you hollow the shelter out too much. Less space is more heat in these scenarios. Thanks for the comment!

    Adrian

  • my questoin is why fight gravaty and throw snow... f**k that, wouldn't just be better to get on top and toss DOWN and go below the hill and start the process?

  • Yeah, in some situations you are right. In some places its so cold that the snow doesn't bond well, however we made use of gravity in this shelter by making huge snow balls further up the slope and rolling them into position. Thanks for the comment.

    Adrian

  • Outstanding job. Thank you very much for sharing this very well done video with us. It is a great example of the old saying:" Knowledge is Power."

I live in Maine, US and we usually get an impressive amount of snow. I am looking forward to building a few of these and sleeping in them this winter. Maybe I'll post a reply for you.

    All the best! Milad

  • Thanks for that and good luck with the shelters. Do please let me know how you got on. I appreciate your comment, cheers!!

    Adrian

  • Great Video, you realy know what your doing. last year, my friend and I slept out in a shealter like this one. I just have one thing to add, make sure that the roof or celing is smooth. The reason for this is so that there is no un even spots causing drips and wetting you. Once again, great video, thanks

  • Sorry about delay in responding. You are dead right! You should smooth the inside. Thanks for the comment! Cheers!

  • come on ireland!

  • It looks like a lot of fun, I built something sort of like this (not as good, yours was brilliant) and took a nap in it but my mother came out and told me to come in :p it is quite an expierience, I hope I could do something like this some time.

  • Excellent Video!

My friends and I used to build this type of shelter as kids living in the midwest USA. Yours is much more refined and professional...One thing we used to do was make a big hole in the roof on the downwind side and we would put a small fire there inside. We sometimes would cook HotDogs and such. Sticks for thickness = Brilliant!

  • Cheers for the kind words! Much appreciated! Hot dogs in a snow shelter? How much better can it get!! That sounds so cool!

    Take Care!!

    Adrian

  • alberta is alot colder then that

  • thank you.very informative.

  • thanks enjoyed the film

  • This time a year ago you were making the film!

  • very cool...the accent just makes it better :)

  • Very interesting Vid thanks

  • Cool stuff man, but im wondering why you guys did not smooth the seal of the cave in order to prevent snow melting (water drops) and annoys you while you are asleep?

    Thanks for the video mate!

  • It doesn't really snow in Ireland right? too warm there. I know up north, the Loften Islands of Norway(?) in the Article Circle, it never goes below 45*F.

  • if the snow isnt deep enough and u pile it on top of the shelter...do u have to pack the snow on top of the shelter so u make a hard roof?

  • Hey there! Yes, its easier to roll the snow in big snow balls and pack it together. Everytime you add more snow, pat it down. If the snow is very fine, best thing is to leave your hill of snow "set" for an hour or so before hollowing it out. This allows it to harden. Thanks for the comment!

    Adrian

  • thanks alot ^^

  • nice adventure scout leader

  • dude! that is awsome! and its big! I-i-i dont have any words cuz its so cool

  • i started to build a snow cave but we onley had about a ft. or 2 of snow so but im working on thax for the tips and such looks cozy i gotta finish building

  • My pleasure! Best of luck! Let me know how you get on!

    Adrian

  • lol It looks cozy :D

  • i say, you just go home =]

  • Thank goodness for affordable video cameras.

  • A shelter for two? what about teh cameraman? lol

    Thank you.

  • Ha ha! Very good! Barry, the camera man is made of tougher stuff!! He got to sleep in a 400 yr old timber hut for the night!! Thanks for the comment!

  • hey man, cool video guys, that was an awesome shelter. I love watching this type of stuff, keep up the good work!

  • me too!

  • i make these for ice fishing to w8st time and then wen its really cold or dont feel like doing it i go into the shelter( and its easier to do with a plow infront of a ATV)

  • I love it thanks for sharing. Also to help prevent cave in try putting up some supports.

  • WoW very nice, i live in quebec and we had 8 ft of snow for the winter... i made a great cave, but i Caved-in and the roof fell of xD its a good thing i had made the roof rly thin

  • Hey there! Thanks for the cool comment! Wow, 8 ft of snow! In Ireland we don't get any snow anymore thanks to good old global warming, hence why we needed to go to the Austrian Alps! You could have a lot of fun with 8 feet of the stuff!!

    Thanks again! Adrian

  • Hi Adrian, nice snow hole - luxury! Must have taken ages with the entrenching tool!
