I dont see why people argue whether it is not goth or not. Goths listening or playing non-Goth music doesnt prove they are not Goth. We(goths) are individuals representing a culture with love in the dark, with different taste on bands. But two things i know of , Goths love the dark and we exist before music does because we are (human)Goths and not the reason that goth music exist XD if you are not agreeing to what i said. Gothic Metal is an unrelated music genre and is not part of the Goth subculture. There are newer Goth Rock, Darkwave and DeathRock bands really worth checking out. A newer Goth Rock band really worth checking out is Solemn Novena; they're great!
Just wanted to say that while I do love most of these bands, none of them are really goth. Some of them have some gothic influences, but I would call this ethereal metal. Great list anyway! :)

Dark Funeral is black METAL and how often do i have to say that gothic and metal are two different things, since their musical origins aren't the same?
There are no "real" gothic metal bands, just some metal groups who adopted gothic rock elements into their music, like Paradise Lost, Anathema or Type O Negative. I can accept people calling these three gothic metal but any other bands compareable to Nightwish, HIM or Cradle of Filth aren't.
Type O Negative definitely have (post)-punk elements in their music, if you are referring to this. But they never claimed to be goths or punks though and they never called their music "gothic metal" it was named that way by the media.
And the problem is, that there's actually not such a thing like gothic metal, it was just a label the media gave to "creepy looking" metal acts like Marylin Manson with the hope to sell them better within a big "gothic-hype".
Despise the name, Gothic is an adjective though. You do know there is a difference between Goth and Gothic? ''Gothic'' can be anything related to Gothic literature. ''Goths'' on the other hand, is a term created by Ian Astbury who described ''The Sex Gang Children'' fans as ''Goths' '- initialized in a subculture called positive punk during the end of 1983. (That was probably way too deep) lol. Anyways, I don't listen to metal, but thanks for the comment. :)

And the term gothIC Rock was already used for bands like Joy Division (although they never really were goth) and Siouxsie and the Banshees before The Sex Gang Children became popular. It's just that goth and gothic became used for the music and subculture much more later, at the end of the 80s. Gothic can be an adjective, but we are referring to gothic rock and that's the same as "goth music". At least they make none in my country.
But, the fact of being goth doesn't limit you to hear only gothic music , for example i like all of those bands, and, there're bands that i like and they dont have nothing to do with the gothic, but i like'em.
it's common to hear the posers to talk about our culture or its music only cuz they think they know but the reality is that they dont. i dont know, i wonder if you have ever read something about the gothic culture, its music, and its division in genres?.... maybe you think some of those bands are gothic becouse of their cloths or i dont know... im not criticizing you, but maybe to avoid that someone call you posser or make fun of you...

holy crap! you think the rasmus is gothic? like Liv Kristine said; not because a band is dressed in black and the lyrics talk in a "dark" way it means they are a gothic band
and in my opinion evanescence is also not a goth band, hell! I think neither of these bands are 100% goth music

@NothingButDead how do you know the maker of this video knows nothing about goth history...and as far as i know, the real goths had nothing to do with black clothes, white make-up, and depressing music so anybody (including you) are not truly goths...by the way gothic rock music doesnt reflect anything about true gothic culture...if you really want to get technical, none of you guys are really "goths"...and you could call people posers all you want but thats like the pot calling the kettle black

i think the guy in the video just calls these bands "goth" because theyre dark and melancholic...hes probably attracted to the subculture of today and not so much to the subculture before it...in the conventional sense you could call thee bands "goth" because thats the word most people use to characterize this type of music today...i dont really see a problem with that

The only acceptable gothic metal band is Type O Negative, because their music has some post-punk elements (and even they aren't in this list!). Dear... did the gothic scene of today really forget about the offspring of their music? It is sad to see so many goths calling (symphonic) metal, ebm, rave and wannabe dark rock like HIM "gothic"...

Dark Funeral is black METAL and how often do i have to say that gothic and metal are two different things, since their musical origins aren't the same?
There are no "real" gothic metal bands, just some metal groups who adopted gothic rock elements into their music, like Paradise Lost, Anathema or Type O Negative. I can accept people calling these three gothic metal but any other bands compareable to Nightwish, HIM or Cradle of Filth aren't.

Type O Negative definitely have (post)-punk elements in their music, if you are referring to this. But they never claimed to be goths or punks though and they never called their music "gothic metal" it was named that way by the media.
And the problem is, that there's actually not such a thing like gothic metal, it was just a label the media gave to "creepy looking" metal acts like Marylin Manson with the hope to sell them better within a big "gothic-hype".

Despise the name, Gothic is an adjective though. You do know there is a difference between Goth and Gothic? ''Gothic'' can be anything related to Gothic literature. ''Goths'' on the other hand, is a term created by Ian Astbury who described ''The Sex Gang Children'' fans as ''Goths' '- initialized in a subculture called positive punk during the end of 1983. (That was probably way too deep) lol. Anyways, I don't listen to metal, but thanks for the comment. :)

I know what the history of goth and post punk is. And the term gothIC Rock was already used for bands like Joy Division (although they never really were goth) and Siouxsie and the Banshees before The Sex Gang Children became popular. It's just that goth and gothic became used for the music and subculture much more later, at the end of the 80s. Gothic can be an adjective, but we are referring to gothic rock and that's the same as "goth music". At least they make none in my country.

But, the fact of being goth doesn't limit you to hear only gothic music , for example i like all of those bands, and, there're bands that i like and they dont have nothing to do with the gothic, but i like'em.

it's common to hear the posers to talk about our culture or its music only cuz they think they know but the reality is that they dont. i dont know, i wonder if you have ever read something about the gothic culture, its music, and its division in genres?.... maybe you think some of those bands are gothic becouse of their cloths or i dont know... im not criticizing you, but maybe to avoid that someone call you posser or make fun of you...
