I actually just read about these rockabilly recordings, and I see why they were never considered anything to write home about. Sorry, George, but this is horrendous! lol
@SuperAmos31 you are right, I used to work for him. He wasnt crazy bout this stuff then, he may have changed his mind since, I dont know. The internet exposed it to the world. I love it and George.
G J's origins were obviously in rockabilly music up to white lightning in 59. he didn't sound too bad at all here, but that one and only "tear-in-his- voice" was made for country blues. and who has ever topped him?
Yeah...... I agree with hortonfanatic....This AIN'T the released version.
I don't have the record anymore, but years ago, I had it on a Satrday-Dixie compilation album. And no, the version I know is spot-on, no dropped time or anything.
There is an alternate take that Ace Records in the UK put out on an LP. I don't know if it's still available but it's well worth a listen with quite different guitar fills (also from Hal Harris, I believe). There is also an alternate take of the flip 'How Come It'. Having said that I think Starday definitely made the right choices in terms of which versions they issued.
Honestly I dont see why he'd be so against this stuff....really, its not much heavier than the early incarnations of white lightning...well, other than the jerry lott or johnny burnette trio style yelling, which in my opinion is a good thing.
Allegedly changed his name from 'George' to 'Thumper' on this one because he was a little embarrassed in front of his country pals to be doing Rock and Roll. Having said that there aren't too many better than 'Rock It'. Hearing it makes me want to take that lawnmower cart out of the drive and head down the freeway looking for a bottle of whisky.
There are some outtakes existing of this song, but they're all by George Jones. Maybe you've heard a cover version of a newer group.. In the 50's only Jones recorded this one.
Tyrone - Thanks for posting my favorite Rockabilly tune... BTW - As of today (4/20/09), George "Thumper" Jones is still alive and well and "rockin"...
awesome !! sounds like art buchanan's - only time will tell

Goerge did a great job on this, but it wasn't his style. Country was his style.

Could be an outtake, but Jones is the only one I've heard.
I also read that if he finds these 45s, he buys em and breaks em. Hates them that much lol. It's not that bad for a '50s cut.
