  • just listen to those chords........ such harmony.... makes your head swim.

  • BEST SONG ..... EVER !!!

  • My favorite band of all. When I was a kid in the 80s and first heard this and their other early songs I thought it was the greatest sound I had ever heard. I still do. Also, I was searching something to express my identity as a person, specifically through music. I was a fan of a lot of different types of music, but none really defined me as a person. When I heard REM I thought "This is who I am".

  • I expect this REM video to be in 1080p if i have to watch 30 seconds of a vevo advert before hand.

  • What annoys me is that the Alternative/Indie youth of today who supposedly know music dont listen or rate rem at all. Never have I heard rem played in any Indie bars or clubs Ive gone to. They really need to wake the fuck up and listen to some brilliantly crafted melodies that their shitty little indies bands could only dream to aspire to.

  • @Noeladishi this is true

  • @Noeladishi Indie bars/clubs. Do those even EXIST? What are they like?

  • @Noeladishi Every generation says why doesn't the younger generation listen to my great music. Those clubs and bars probably only play newer music. That's how it always has been.

  • Howard was the man! Miss him!

  • Primeira musica deles

    E ja chegaram arrasando !!!

    eeeeeeeeeeita !!!! *-*-*-*-*-*-*

  • love my europe :') ...

  • This song reminjds me a forest by the cure

  • Peter Buck was a hottie. Just sayin'.

  • Thumbs up if you consider REM and the Geto Boys as favorites...

  • with out R.E.M ,we would have never had Radiohead. amazing

  • Back then I was young and thought He was saying...."calling out in the trenches"

  • is this the Arthur Pierson video?

  • Everything I know about Europe I owe to this song.

  • it's not curious that a song with the word Radio in it make the way pf alternative rock easier to the mainstream

  • 12-17-2011. He's full of glee at 53. Happy Birthday, Mike Mills.

  • I discovered R.E.M. as an 12 years old teenager in 1993. Two years later, I owned all their older stuff, inclusive Chronic Town. Now I'm 30 and I'm proud of myself as a teenager.

  • @itsneverbeenlike1 same here bro

  • @itsneverbeenlike1 I remember listening to this song while playing ultima underworld.

I would listen to the entire album over and over and enjoy it very much.Since the music of ultima underworld can get tiresome to hear,i put on philadelphia and greatest hits albums.

  • WONT EVER BE FORGOTTEN!

  • Murmur has been in my top 10 lp's ever since about 1986 or so....there's such a magic and atmosphere to this record.

  • thumbs up who is listening to this in 2011

  • gotta love what was once considered alternative rock. long live free spirit radio in free north america!!

  • REM AND B-52's........Athens G-A all the way!!!

  • Man oh man, I played the Murmur cassette in my Walkman over and over again until it fried.

  • and god said "let there be R.E.M.!"

  • So sad so few views. People are missing out.

  • Are they FINALLY gone? YAY!

  • So, it's pretty safe to say any "official" video will have a commercial in front of it.

  • REM AND THE SMITHS THE BEST BANDS OF THE WORLD ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • @dxrkogreen I was going to back you up all the way, with your comment there. I absolutely adore The Smiths and don't mind a bit of REM but then I clicked on your profile and saw that you like Coldplay. And, hence, I lost all respect I had for your musical tendencies... Just saying.

    Much Love.

  • @dxrkogreen: You stole the words from my mouth! Anyway, don't forget Joy Division, too!;)

  • @dxrkogreen LOL

  • @dxrkogreen radiohead too!

  • One of their best songs and least played!

  • This song ROCKS!!!!!

  • i believe people should take a look at Midnight Oil.... if no one knows wwho that is.. their an aussie band WHO I believe midnight oil did take a bit out of... R.E.M. is still AWESOME!!!!!

  • This video was filmed in my hometown of Summerville, Ga.. If only Paradise Garden's still looked like this :( R.I.P. Rev. Howard Finster

    andrea uruguay

  • GREAT BAND! YOU'LL NEVER DIE! MISS YOU!!!

  • but the beauty is, is that their music will always live on.

  • GOODBYE

  • I always thought that Michael sounded like Neil Diamond in this video.

  • thanks to all!

  • REM defined alternative rock... Thank You!

  • @hotwater220 First heard this great song on 80s comedy the " The Party Animal " It had a brilliant sountrack

  • R.E.M. Free the World. Thanks for the music!

  • thanks r.em. for all of that great music.

  • Thanks for all the great music, guys.

  • This comment is in Honor of REM. I wish I could have saw you live but never did. I'm gonna miss you. Happy retiring.

  • Thanks Guys for making the best music of my lifetime. the worlds gonna miss you.

  • Hey, who's that guy with all the hair singing?

  • Ithaca mall parking lot. I still got your REM tapes, although the notebook about your European vacation is long gone. End confession.

  • Ithaca mall parking lot. I still got your REM tapes, although the notebook about your European vacation is long gone. End confession.

  • Thank you R.E.M. for thirty great years of music. Enjoy Rock & Roll retirement.

  • Good bye, REM...

  • there's still good alternative music coming out today... but trying to find it on the radio, is probably a bad idea.

  • @chris92w Exactly. While there are still goood bands coming out every year, what has become "popular music" and therefore gets the airtime has gone downhill quite a bit. I do think some of us that were the 80s generation hcan get stuck in the 80s, but then that happens with every generation. My dad thinks music stopped with The Eagles, Doobies, and Simon and Garfunkel... I think a lot of us stick with the music that was our "coming of age" music, and some stick ONLY to that music.

  • @timecowx god there are some boring old farts on here lol. it's a bottomless pit discovering music. all you have to do is get a turntable and go to any used record store, i keep finding all sorts of odd things i never knew existed.

  • whoa he had hair.

  • Who's to say what alternative rock is "supposed" to sound like? Move along people, great song, plenty of great new stuff too and there was great alternative type music which preceded REM also...

  • This song was the game changer and I wasnt even born until the late 80s LOL

  • No me gust escuchar una canción y entender cada palabra.

    Michael Stipe.R.E.M.1983

  • 30 seconds to mars is not really alternative. More emo, progessive and hard rock.

  • where does REM find their sets?

    lol

  • Vevo is the anti-Christ

  • fawk you with da passion vevo.. -.-

  • Commercial Free YouTube

  • fuck you vevo, i'm here to hear music and put me lady caca? ¬¬''

    baka!

  • This song is too short!

  • @ilovewalruses84 The video edits the album version by a minute

  • The American Smiths

  • @soldat182 this

  • @soldat182 REM sound nothing like the smiths :S

  • Seriously, just get AdBlock Plus if you use Firefox or Chorme. All I see on Vevo videos are people complaining about the ads. Whining to everyone else won't get you anywhere.

  • For people nagging about all the ads and bullshit, etc. that Vevo put next to their videos, get Ad Blocker Plus for Firefox... I've got it myself; it has made me a happier person ;)

  • who/what is vevo?

  • Love REM!

  • I saw these guys on their very first national club tour of the US, summer of 1984, at The Metro in Boston. It was a free event sponsored by WBCN in the middle of a weekday afternoon. This song was, of course, the "single" that they were promoting.

An up-and-coming band who'd just signed their first record deal on their first national tour? A special event regardless of the music!

  • Still just as fresh as the day it was written. One of greatest alt-rock songs ever recorded. Thank you Buck, Berry, Mills, Stipe (and Jefferson, too).

  • great song, this song representives all that rem made on that time.

  • This must be the Hib-Tone recording because Micheal's vocals are clearly understandable as compared with the Murmur recording. I like them both equally. This for it's pop sound veiling the poetry of the lyrics and the Murmur recording for the "what in God's name is he singing??" factor. Top band of all time in my book. I have grown up listening to them (envious that I am just a tad too young for experiencing them earlier) and have loved everything they're ever done.

  • Heard about this from the art history podcast called the Art You Missed...

Had only heard about REM from the ninties... this is awesome!!!

  • Honestly the melodies that Michael Stipe sings and his voice made the band. The rest I could do without. He should have done his own thing and stuck it through and not been so Attached to his band.

  • @skeloguy, are you one of those grouchy old guys standing on his porch with a rake and a waterhose yelling, "Pull up your pants and turn down that music you are scaring my poodles"

  • In the early days it was the best

  • i know where this was filmed i live very close by

  • Thumbs up if you agree that music was best when you were between the ages of 12 and 22.

  • lol i see no ads... i just hear great music

  • I think there's another version of this video and song, which runs for about four minutes and doesn't feature any footage of the band in concert or any slow motion takes in Rev. Howard Finster's garden. Still, an excellent song.

  • IMO, this was there greatest song ever, Orange Crush, South Central Rain might be a close 2nd...

  • I miss real music. The last 20 years have been terrible and now we have 'artists' like Lady Gaga, Bieber, Jessie J, The Wanted... honestly my ears bleed listening to the trash that gets played on the radio today. What I wouldn't give for some more REM, Dinosaur Jr or Sonic Youth.

  • @duffybear1988 There has been tons of good music in the last 20 years...it's just buried under the garbage played on the radio.

  • wish old rem would reappear.

  • Get over the whole vevo thing if you want to listen to it somewhere else go ahead just know that this is the best quality

  • This was what was called "progressive new wave" back when it was new, Though some soon began just calling it "progressive".

Personally, I liked their later stuff MUCH better.

  • Vevo, the ads are effing enough, but you had to put a goddamn justin bieber next to an REM video???

    Screw you, VEVO

  • @4tlus5o1idu5 Heck, this song is older than he is....

  • @4tlus5o1idu5 would you rather pay for youtube, or have vevo? Because paying for it is the alternative

  • @4tlus5o1idu5 On mine right now is a very unflattering pic of Steven Tyler. I guess it beats JB. But compared to the talent of Michale Stipe, all those 70s era Camaro rockers were shit! At least Bieber will be forgotten about in a few years.

  • @4tlus5o1idu5

    this isn't vevo, you dumbfuck.

  • @4tlus5o1idu5

Well... It's not VEVO, it's EMI. And I've yet to spot Emperor Beebertine

Although, putting Liz Phair up here like she means anything anymore is a bit too much.

  • @4tlus5o1idu5 do you think that, selena gomez is the worst

  • damnit vevo

  • This is what alternative rock is supposed to sound like. Its not supposed to sound like 30 Seconds to Mars or whatever new shit that is called "alternative rock" today. Now if more people (mostly teens) would listen to this......

  • @Skeloguy Alternative bands these days dont really go for this sound. The folk guitarist like Buck and Marr is long dead.

  • @Noeladishi They didn't really go for "this sound" back then either, hence why REM has such a unique sound...

  • @Noeladishi Wrong, lots of bands went for this sound, the smiths, the cure, the replacements, whipping boy, into paradise, the stone roses, etc etc

  • @Skeloguy more teens are starting to listen to the old stuff I think. It's the same thing as in the late 90's when Creed and Limp Bizkit took over and we started dragging out our parents' Stones and Zeppelin albums; when new music stops being good, kids who give a shit about quality will turn to the old stuff.

  • @Skeloguy 30 Seconds to Mars: "Hard rock, emo, new prog, post-grunge, progressive metal" - Wiki

  • @Greeb17 Why is My Chemical Romance labeled Alternative Rock on Wikipedia if they sound nothing similar to R.E.M., Nirvana, The Cure, Foo Fighters or Weezer?

  • @Skeloguy The term Alternative rock was never meant to describe an actual genre. Alternative rock meant music that was literally an ALTERNATIVE to the pop radio station which played music with no substance... just like they do now. Some people use the term to describe a certain sound but those people are using it incorrectly.

  • @Skeloguy and pixies and sonic youth

  • @Skeloguy what would happen if i or some of my fellow teenagers listen to this?

  • @Skeloguy i totally agree. im 14 this guy at school yesterday said he didn't know who the beatles were at first i didn't believe him but then i realized he actually had no idea who they were, so i whacked him in the face.

  • @understated2010 Yeah same here! I'm 14 and I met a kid once who said he never heard of The Beatles. I thought he was high on some drug because even 8 year olds know who The Beatles are.

  • @Skeloguy yeah. and that's the way it should be.

  • @Skeloguy old R.E.M. is the best, but there's no need to put down today's band. Today's R.E.M. is also a pale shadow from Murmur days.

  • @Skeloguy 20 year old reporting in. Venturing into my morning of great music discovery

  • @Skeloguy and who ever said 30 seconds couldn't be alternative rock, TOO?! nobody has to be stuck listening to one thing even though R.E.M. is undeniably great!

  • @Skeloguy

Alternative rock has morphed over the years my friend and is constantly changing, not to say that it's a good change. I'm just saying shit doesn't have the same sound forever.

  • @Skeloguy who r u to say what alternative rock should sound like? ppl can listen to whatever kind of music they want. and 30 Seconds to Mars is new prog/ emocore, not alternative rock

  • @Skeloguy If you really knew what alternative rock was you would not look towards such a mainstream band as 30 seconds to mars to be your example of modern alt rock. Instead, listen to some indie music and you will find your alternative rock.

  • @Skeloguy Oi, don't diss 30STM. First of all, it's not a "new" band as it was formed in 1998. It's all music, there's no "bad" music or "good" music. I'm a huge fan of both bands and neither of them is wore or better than the other. They just don't sound the same, they are different. I think it's quite important for music, to stay original, don't you think? :)

  • @Skeloguy haha totally agree, i'm 19 yrs old, fuck.... I hate 30 seconds of shit, the first time I ever heard radio free europe I was 15, my world changed forever. PD: FUCK YOU VEVO

  • @Skeloguy rem is a realy good band lots of talent and lots of good songs they have put out over the years

  • @Skeloguy 30 Seconds to Mars are not "alternative rock", they have gone down a prog/hard rock direction, and in the process have lost alot of their more shameful, shallow teenage fans (thank god)

  • @Skeloguy What's wrong with 30 Seconds To Mars?

Jared Leto is a very talented man.

Just because music sounds different doesn't mean it's bad. It just means it's music, and music changes.

I love The Pixies, The Cure, The Smiths, etc.

But that doesn't mean I don't love Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, etc.

If music didn't change, we would still be listening to big band.

It's 2011. Get the fuck out of 1983, pudwhacker.

  • @manchildisfag you are so fucking right dude...

  • @Skeloguy dude, your so right,30 seconds to mars sucks so bad

  • Not all alternative sounds the same it has evolved over time. When this song came out Alternative music was still in its infancy. If bands sound like this today everyone would be complaining about how there copying R.E.M.@Skeloguy

  • There was a time when radio music wasn't generic and boring. That time was the 80's decade.

  • @skankler if you don't want their fanclub stuff then don't join it....... it's pretty simple.

  • Don Dixon and Mitch Easter deserve equal billing here. This sacrifices none of the energy from the Hibtone version. A great song lovingly produced.

  • Great song but I much prefer the hib tone version on Eponymous.

  • Who is that fucking moron that didn't like this song?

  • @dakarlion1 And he called a friend!

  • What does EMI have to do with this song?

  • who the fuck is Jessie J?

  • The fuck? I read all this stuff about how R.E.M.'s vocalist is famous for his indeciphrable 'mumbling' vocals, but I haven't heard him do anything but sing normally in all the songs I heard.

  • God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health, through the purity and essence of our natural bodily fluids. God bless you all, and good night. Base Commander Jack D. Ripper

  • @nicholsjoshua15 one of the best-contrived personages in film.

  • 1981 ALTERNATIVE/INDIE ROCK

  • Some of the best of the early 80s New Wave.

  • @theseether This isn't new wave, it's college rock.

  • @0987cheez Whatever it is i like it :)

  • First time hearing this. I like it!
