O.O I am soooo going to watch this! Our crappy local TV stations only broadcast American junk, unfortunately... But at least it served as an advertisement for the proper version ;D. British. TV. Is. AMAZING!!!1 <3
Life on Mars UK was the best. The American version sucked! (I'm from the USA btw.) The actors were horrible and the re-writes to the scripts were terrible. No one could hold a candle to Philip and John. Loved this show tons. Only saw the first two series/seasons of Ashes to Ashes here on BBC America. Hope they bring the final series/season over soon or at least put out a Region 1 DVD Complete Set out.
I watched the American version of this and I couldn't get into it. It just didn't quite draw me in like the UK original. (Thank goodness for PBS. Otherwise I would have never known how good this show really was). I wish it would have lasted a bit longer. I miss watching it. Definitely one of my favorites.
John Simm, you adorable, elusive bastard! If you had ended the show with him jumping off the roof, I would've booked a flight over to London pronto, come over, stamped on all your toys, and maybe a few body parts. My mom and I screamed at the TV during the 11 seconds between the two scenes...the directors were damn sneaky! But best payoff ever.
Also, one annoyance I have with this. 2:07. That's not why he goes back. Its because one of the people says to him "its not real if you can't feel anything." when he's in the conference room he cuts his hand and can't feel it. so he decides the 21st century is the fake.
I don't know. When Tennant and Simm were doing Doctor Who I wouldn't agree, they gave it a lot of depth... but recently I would have to agree. I love both either way
I loved Life on Mars, ending was superb! But the ending for The Office (the original UK version with Ricky Gervais) was brilliant too, in fact I think it should be first!
hold on 0:49 thinking man's dr who, this is no way more a thinkable show tehn Dr who, if anything dr who is a much more thinkable show then this grrrrrrrrrrrr im pissed at that fat dickhead
This is the best ending of all time, but the ending for A2A was on a par with it as well. You finally found out everything about Gene's world, with drama, suspense, emotions and the long-awaited Gene/Alex kiss. It was beautiful- I actually cried, and believe me, takes a lot for TV to make me cry. Two amazing TV shows, two brilliant endings.
I was just saying the other day how I think this is the best ending ever in a tv show. It would be very hard to beat in the future. A wonderful show, and Ashes to Ashes completed the circle and gave us an explanation that was quite fitting, though not quite as satisfying as this finale.
@DealFret I see where you are coming from, but I don't believe that is the moral of the tale at all. I think there are a whole raft of possible morals that could be derived from the whole series, not just the ending, but the one you've arrived at I don;t believe was intended at all.
@MyRomany1 you have to admit, our hero commits suicide to escape his drab, depressing existence. May be there's some other more subtle, nebulous implications that I haven't detected, but the direct one is that: suicide is the answer.
" It's great to have the Country talking ! " . John aint wrong , after all , look at bloody Eastenders with the " Everyone's talking about it " line . Not everyone talks about Eastenders , either because you live in a Country where Eastenders is not shown abroad , or because you watch something decent and worth watching like Doctor Who or Life on Mars , or if you are talking about Eastenders it's because your saying just how shit it is every flipping Week each Year .
I just finished the final episode....it was so fucking fantastic. I was actually tearing up because that was the last we were ever going to of Sam Tyler.
This is the best ending I have ever seen, best series I have ever seen, and totally wildly insanely brilliant and unpredictable ending. IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE THE SERIES.....DON'T WATCH THIS!!!! It's not much of a thrilling ending if you don't want to see it and watch this though. It's kinda pointless actually really.
Is he only taking into consideration the finales from English series? Because if he's not then I'm very disappointed at the fact that he did not include Frasier in it. If he is,then I agree with the spot he placed OFAH in.It truly is a great finale :-)
A little insulting to Doctor Who fans to call Life on Mars "the thinking man's Doctor Who," isn't it? Especially since the audiences for both shows overlap significantly? I know I love both.
@LadyTinidril82 To be honest, I don't really thing they were slagging off DW, just pointing out a key difference. Doctor Who certainly isn't for stupid people or anything, but to be honest there aren't really too many underlying themes and the story arcs are a bit basic. (I love Doctor Who by the way! I just think it works on a different basis from LoM)
@blu3j4yw4y Oh, I totally agree about Doctor Who and Life on Mars working from different bases. Doctor Who draws you in with its characters, but Life on Mars' premise is much more philosophical. I love them both. The way the guy's comment was worded sounded vaguely uppity, but you're probably right! :-)
@LadyTinidril82 I know! 'The thinking man's Doctor Who'? The bloody cheek! Plus, Doctor Who's plots are a little more intricate and developed than Life on Mars' were, especially with its story arcs. You really got a sense of things building up to a finale. With LOM it did the same thing, but the stories didn't feel as linked. I love BOTH shows though and Ashes to Ashes.
I like Russell T. Davies take on the end as related in the book Dr Who: The Writer's Tale: "...well, going out on Sam's suicide would have been such a downer and wasn't the point; he died so so that he could live. For ever. In his dreams. The fanboy part of my mind sort of quibbles that the fall would kill him, not put him back in a coma, therefore the fantasy life would stop dead. But that's me being too atheist. That ending is saying that an afterlife can last for ever - or for a split second"
@lostintimeline He was in a coma. So all the things he was hearing/seeing on radio's & TV's were links to the 'real world' (2006). Its a kinda Wizard of Oz scenario where real life things are linking into the dream world. Frank Morgan wasn't evil. He was just another life (Sams surgeon) / dream (Hyde dept) link. The girl was part of his imagination and helped the story along. You could argue many things about the true nature of his coma, but thats the basics.
@lostintimeline He committed suicide in the end. He didn't 'feel' alive in the real world when he returned. So decided to jump off the building to get back to his imagined reality, which he preferred. To truly understand it, you have to watch everything from start to end. I've only started ashes to ashes, but im sure they'll change it around... I don't know.
1973 was all in his head, but when he returned to 2006 after his operation, he realised that the mundane grey life that was real, was nothing compared to the life inside his head. And so he jumped off the roof to die and go back to 1973 for good.
is your intepretation mate, its what did you think it happens, theres no full explanations to this ending, because is completely open to interpetations and thats the magic of it
"Like Doctor Who" is that show on every onces mind? I bet in a few years, Simm will be remembered for the Master, and not this guy... specialy because he is comming back for Christmas

As much as I love this show does anyone else think it is also somewhat flawed?
They could have done so much more with the premise of a 2009 copper doing a dayjob in '73. I mean it didn't really shine through if Sam was in '73 or in '93. 30+ years of policing knowledge should have been contrasted more than what we got. Also the Gene Hunt character receded after midway, he should have been written a lot more central with more dialogue / rants.
One of the best ever. Was totally hooked to this for weeks back when it came out. Still like Ashes to Ashes Philip Glenister is awesome..first it was as you got a glance into what happened to Sam after the ending of Life on Mars and after that just a good show.

My name's Connor, I'm 14 years old, and I've just been on a driving test with my grandad in a written off Rover 420d which saw me crash into a wall and break a fence. What this has to do with Life on Mars is up to you.
The ManU/ManC episode was terrific! Football fans walking to a match together - fans were the important people in those days - not players and agents +media moguls. In so many waysfootball and life in general were so much better in 1973 ( Remember Sunderland v Leeds U?!). Lets put the brakes on this oh so right-on world we now live in!! Gene Hunt is a social hero and reflects some of our inner beliefs that so many people are now frightened to talk about and agree with but deep down.........
Ashes to Ashes really upset me because I like having the idea that he goes back and stays with Gene and everyone and is happy. I don't like the story they added on it on the spinoff.. it's depressing.
It didn't for me. I see Ashes to Ashes as a whole different show, not as a continuation. So even though I watch A2A, in my mind Sam and Gene are still nicking scum and having a great time up in Manchester. : )
It was and while I liked the UK version better, the US version was coming into its own when it was canceled. Then the writers decided to take all that away by making it all a dream.
It turns out he's in hibernation on a trip to mars to cure cancer using martian DNA, and the computer was giving him a simulation to keep his mind happy, but a meteor storm causes his simulation to get jumbled up making him a 2008 cop in a 70's world. Then it goes wizard of Oz, you were there, and you were there, now lets venture off into the unknown........the end.......... not kidding, youtube it.......
no offence 2 those who like the american version but it can never compete with the proper 1. If you like the american ending more than the original then you are completly deluded..it sucks so badly
I totally agree with this being number 1 it was brilliant loved every minuite of it, aparently the Ashes to Ashes ending is even better that'll take some doing!
I have seen some of the American one and I have to say the original is better by far but thats only because Philip Glenister IS Gene Hunt for me, and John Simm is incredible, in fairness you can't compete with that level of class!
I loved the ending, even if I didn't expect it. And, I've been waiting for that kiss through all the episodes. Adorable! And Gene Hunt is my favourite police officer!
I loved it. I watched the American version series finale last night and it was COMPLETE AND UTTER CRAP! Why did they have to F**k with such a brilliant ending?
I enjoy both the UK and USA Life On Mars shows. But they just prove that 1973 isn't really that different from 2009 except for technology and political correctness.
the song they actually play in the series (not in the clip above) is Life On Mars by David Bowie. But I'm not sure what song they used in the above clip, though, sorry.
Just read in TV Guide that the US version will have a different ending. Producers said, no coma, all questions will be answered and Sam saves his younger self that allows him to return home. WTF? Come on. I love both versions, but there better be more to it!!
O.O I am soooo going to watch this! Our crappy local TV stations only broadcast American junk, unfortunately... But at least it served as an advertisement for the proper version ;D. British. TV. Is. AMAZING!!!1 <3

What this has to do with Life on Mars is up to you.

cracking show.
soundtrack was like someone rifled through my music collection & played it back to me (even in the trailer)
the song 'life on mars' makes me tear up even now & the show finished 2yr ago.
seen part of US version to see if it really was that bad. it was !!

Absolutely mind blowing that this won. I can only assume 99% of viewers switched channel after Sam jumped!
To me it was the worst possible ending, completely against the grain of the entire series, and premise, screwed up the continuity, just awful.
A happy ending was very possible without this - have a look at the US series, Infinitely better.

Not at all.
Who says when he woke up in 2009 that it was real?
He was told that he's only real if he can feel something and couldn't feel cutting himself.
Survived a leap off a building (hence the leap of faith)
So in my mind, he wasn't really in 2009. He's probably still in his coma and his mind gave him 2009 but his mind wanted 73.
So he went back.
Even the radio continued to talk to reaffirm that he still isn't in his real timeline, thus in a coma.
He's just turned it off.

Absolutely brilliant ending!
Leaves so much open and so much to explore.
And continue with, since we also have Ashes to Ashes, the spin off series which can answer even more.
The US ending was crap and they obviously didn't get what Life on Mars was about.

Oh, you're not stupid. I cried, too...
Or that means, that we both are stupid.

Samesame... it ruined the whole legend of it really :(
TBV06 2 years ago
It didn't for me. I see Ashes to Ashes as a whole different show, not as a continuation. So even though I watch A2A, in my mind Sam and Gene are still nicking scum and having a great time up in Manchester. : )

Good grief, the american ending sounds dreadful. Too complicated!
miss0mayonnaise 2 years ago 12

Yep, Life on Mars was brilliant..Ashes to Ashes isn't as good
DavijoBoy 2 years ago
I totally agree with this being number 1 it was brilliant loved every minuite of it, aparently the Ashes to Ashes ending is even better that'll take some doing!
I have seen some of the American one and I have to say the original is better by far but thats only because Philip Glenister IS Gene Hunt for me, and John Simm is incredible, in fairness you can't compete with that level of class!
Glad they left the kiss in! :)

WhoLetYouGo 2 years ago 2
Because they probably didn't want to have the same exact ending.
From what I read, the ending was crap.
I really liked that show and I wish it didn't have to end or I could get my hands on the original series.
allforyouz 2 years ago
I enjoy both the UK and USA Life On Mars shows. But they just prove that 1973 isn't really that different from 2009 except for technology and political correctness.

the song they actually play in the series (not in the clip above) is Life On Mars by David Bowie. But I'm not sure what song they used in the above clip, though, sorry.

Just read in TV Guide that the US version will have a different ending. Producers said, no coma, all questions will be answered and Sam saves his younger self that allows him to return home. WTF? Come on. I love both versions, but there better be more to it!!
