@lyue1996 Dude, no need to be rude. There are times where Japanese animation can be decent, but they're rarely better than Western animation, this is a fact. Is it because of a lack of skill? No, anyone can be good. Why Japanese animation is usually inferior? Because they focus on producing their cartoons with limited animation to save time and money. Meanwhile Western animated films have a very high budget and are produced over a long span of time, hence why their animation is usually better.

@lyue1996 Yeah, you're right. The reason why is because it actually had a decent production. Usually Japanese animation is known for being cheap, limited and thus quite static compared to Western animation which is usually more fluid. But for this film, they went for a more traditional approach similar to American animated films with decent frame-rate, more cels drawn and actual lip-sync. I hope more anime in the future are produced this way.

@lyue1996 That's because it's a film with a larger budget while that Mario cartoon was obviously produced cheaper, it was just a television show after all. But in comparison to other Western animated films, even Akira's anime is ultimately slightly inferior and less fluid.

When it comes to Western animated features, because they're high budget films, they obviously would have decent animation, and Akira is one specific anime that is animated traditionally like them, hence why it looks so amazing compared to other anime which look static in comparison.

This is a technical fact, not because we're better, but because there's more time and money put into it, it's not like Japan can't do it themselves, they just choose not to. And Studio Ghibli is one of my favorite anime studios, but even they have their limits when it comes to animation(although their art is fantastic).

How about Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, FLCL, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ghost in the Shell, etc. There's a lot of anime that has decent production. Read the book Little Boy by Murakami Takashi. You have to also remember that Akira was also made in 1988 and was hand-drawn.

Having seen both FF: the spirits within and Akira, I must highly recommend both movies with extreme praise. FF: The Spirits Within is definitely more straightforward and "American", and it's storyline, while completely different to that trailer, is badass. But Akira...wooah. If you can understand everything, I guarantee that the movie will both shock you and leave a lasting impact. BTW, Akira is more graphic, but both involve copious amounts of death, so have fun.
