  • "sometimes means we have to cut down trees." That's an understatement since the mountain tops are totally denuded of trees and wildlife.

As to this video---it would be nice if the mining companies did more than throw out seed for scrub grass, but most manage not to do ANY reclamation at all. Zeb Mountain is an abberation. I wish them luck with the chestnut trees but there would be no reason to restore if the mountains if they weren't ruined in the first place.

  • Did you even watch the video? Do you know anything about the industry?

Lumbering destroyed most of WV's forests long ago. Now we're famous for our forests.

  • I watched the first time and then again today. I'm not sure that you did tho! This is a good thing but it is an aberration. Most MTR sites are planted with scrub grass. Until all MTR sites are replanted this is nothing more than an experiment. I wish them luck and hope the idea spreads to other coal companies but since replanting trees costs money that isn't very likely. Lots of coal companies don't even bother with the scrub grass and the government gives them a pass.

  • If Showalter Micropower gets its start in WV, it would grow native trees to be replanted for FREE. SMP would make grid grade power for any mine for 1/2 price (up to 8.5 megs per hour) and use the off gases from natural gas gen-sets to fast grow trees in greenhouses. Trees can grow up to 130 times faster in this way (F.A.C.E. project). Know any mines that needs 1/2 price power and free trees?
