Now fire departments can handle fires on the 9th floor of a building.
To claim this is just corporate greed is nonsense. My grandparents suffered far worse as Jews in Eastern Europe. Those who stayed were wiped out in 1943. My grandfather figured out that if he did one part of the shirt while the next person did another part, they could speed up the process and get paid more (an early production line).
According to my grandparents they didn't feel exploited. They were happy for the opportunity
The ninth floor is where the bulk of the people died. The fire started on the 8th floor and those folks escaped. The fire escape collapsed from the weight of the people escaping. The fire prevented the use of the open doors and the freight elevators.
It was a tragedy, but even my grandparents did not entirely blame the owners. One-way locking exit doors, sprinklers, and much sturdier fire escapes have practically eliminated this kind of tragedy.
My grandparents were there. Sorry but the facts as they can best be determined don't add up to the tale as told by the video. Both owners and their children were there. The fire marshal determined it was a cigarette butt in the scrap bin that started the blaze.
Only the door to Greene Street was locked. The person who had the key escaped but did not unlock the door. The door to Washington Place was not locked. There were two freight elevators and a fire escape. The fire escape collapsed.
unions are outdates. unless the union can keep the jobs from going elsewhere there should be no union.
teachers unions are just stupid. the kids are more important than there degenerate teachers who became teachers because they failed at their first attempt in colledge. or they just didnt know wha to become.
@geneco "Many of the company owners" -- you mean "both", right, but oh no, that would make "all" of the company owners Democrats.... Regardless of their political affiliation, they were rabidly anti-union. Tool, you were saying.....?
It could be like this again, if we let the Republicans and their corporate handlers get their way. The Republicans have never cared anything about people...they are total capitalist and all they have ever cared about is money and the bottom line.
i think we all know that a tragedy has to occur before changes are made and the owner of the shirtwaist factory didnt care about the workers, his only concern was making more money than he needed but what the hell do i know its just my opinion, and locking the doors so the workers cant go outside sealed their fate, this is sad and should have never happened...
@rhoadsrules1 I think it was sad to i mean those workers worked under cruel conditions and most were kids and immigrants working for less than minumum wages.
Locking the women in, was NOT accidental.....t When you lock women in and give them no escape route from being burned alive, that is the same as murder. These women were mistreated, abused and murdered....and that was not an accident.
Is there any footage of what the former Triangle Shirtwaist Factory interior looks like now? Even pictures? I'm a history buff and love to visit historical sites. The Triangle building still stands and is now used by NYU, but I would love to see the inside of that building now.
@literisfrenchfor The building belongs to New york University-renamed the "Brown Building" There are science labs there now. You can go online to Facebook-"Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition" and click on to pictures posted when the building was being renovated. There are annual commemorations at the site of the building-The next one is on March 25,2011 at 12pm-(the centennial)
@literisfrenchfor Hello-No, I'm sorry-I can't with any certainty-You might be able to find out via that site "Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition" by posting this question on the wall or the "comment" section directly under the photos-
that is one reason we need labor unions! to protect us from things like this

de uma certa forma
as vítimas são os piores carrascos
são carrascos de si mesmas
nunca esperem que os favorecidos favoreçam aos desfavorecidos
esses terão que lutar
se não por si mesmos, por seus filhos
assim
pode ser que alguma coisa mude
os poderosos, nunca, lamentaram às vítimas
mas sim à repercussão
