I'm welling up with tears. I watch these Half Dome videos because one day I hope to try it, but Lord knows I am accident prone. I'm so sorry this happened to her and all the other accidents in the park this year. Thank you for sharing the video.
Nice backpack, I have the same one. I give you credit I probably still would of gone up there. Cool that you did that for your 31st birthday, I'm 31 as well. I went up there in 2005, hopefully I'll get to go up there sometime again.
We also share the same Birthday. I climbed Half Dome on July 19th of this year; which was the same day the three people got washed over the edge of Vernal Falls. You guys certainly made the right choice. I hope you get another chance to try again.
Hey -- we share a birthday, though I've got 35 years on you. I spent a lot of time in the Valley back before you were born, and a lot of things like this happened. The rock will be there after the rain stops. It'll be there next summer. It'l be there long after we're both gone. RIP Hayley.
This is really sad and I,m glad you took the rangers recommendation not to go further, If it was up to me No One Would be Allowed To Climb Half Dome! I was once speaking to a friend of mine and she once said, Always say a Prayer when you got to a sacred site.
I've done the hike to the top of Half Dome 7or 8 times now, never in wet conditions. It must have been a panic situation up there because of lightning to prompt them to descend in the rain. I'm all for two sets of climb cables on Half Dome- one up and one down. That would lessen some of the traffic jams and would probably be much safer. Harnesses and laniards for some would help as well.
Just curious, but why were you also relieved? Was it because of fatigue or fear? I'm not criticizing, heck I'm not in enough shape at the moment to attempt this myself... and maybe you're birthday present was the presence of mind to simply make a life-saving decision and get a second chance...
I'm from the bay area and we have lost many people this year in yosemite. She sounded like the sweetest and best person. I hope she's at peace and the memories for her family and friends outweigh the sorrow.
@JNBchick13 : I remember; we were all looking at eachother amazed that people were still opting to head up the dome...unbelievable isnt it? So sad what happened to Hayley...
Me and my girlfriend had the opportunity to work with Haley. She was great, funny and nice and we all will miss her very much. She was turning 26 later this month. She had climbed Half Dome before and was really excited to climb it again this past weekend.
It still doesn't feel real. It caught us all by surprise and we are all still trying to cope with her being gone. Her family are in out thoughts and prayers.
We will always love and miss you Haley, may you rest in peace.
In the outdoors, a willingness to move to "Plan B" is probably your biggest safety asset. I don;'t know enough about the fallen hiker to be critical, but I'm proud of you, 1rootube1. John Ladd (co-moderator John Muir trail Group on Yahoo)
omg so sad :( i hiked at midnight to the base of half dome to watch the sunset with friends just a day before the 3 people plunged over vernal falls just a couple of weeks ago. i was exhausted, dehydrated and completely dizzy and opted out of climbing up the cables. i watched horrified as one woman coming down literally lost grip and slid for a good 10-15 feet. i thought for sure i was going to watch her fall to her death. i have never been so relieved to be at sea level EVER!

@sunstarsmoon The cables are seriously not that bad... ive seen 9 year olds climb it with ease. Try climbing the regular northwest face :)

This is a beautifully done film-noire. Who directed this? The pathos in the male narrator's voice is unimaginably moving.

I am one of the girls sitting at the base of the cables with you while we all ate lunch together (1:29 minutes into the video)!
