Found this when I went looking for Cal's "Ritmo Caliente" and cuts from his "West Side Story" album. These were part of my introduction to jazz in general and I've missed them over the years. Thanks for posting.
Different strokes for different folks. lol I love Cal's light touch, and his pauses, the way he let's it breathe. I respect that you like Mike Dillon, but for me, he pounds the sh*t out of the vibes. My ears don't like it.
The live version of Los Bandidos that appears on Verve's Compact Jazz series (Cal Tjader compilation) credits the great Armando Perazo on congas. The full credits is as follows:
Cal Tjader: vibes
Armando Peraza: congas
Stan Gilbert: bass
Chick Corea: piano
Carl Burnett: drums
Recorded live at El Matador, January 1967 in San Francisco, CA
Definitely an essential composition in latin jazz!
brilliant.

When the record was first released I bought it at King Karol records in NYC.for $3.84
(stereo).I would play it day and night and when I learned the chords, played it on the
piano whenever I had access to one. Playing Los Bandidos on the piano opened a lot of doors socially for me.Women
especially liked to hear it,they thought it was very sexy, and I would always oblige them.

Cal Tjader was kissed by the music gods. Nobody can come close to what he did on vibes. His touch, his timing....impeccable!

Yeah! Latin Jazz of the 60s and 70s were the two best decades of Latin Jazz and what they call nowadays Salsa which is actually mambo or Latin Jazz.
This song really kicks with licks and flair. I love the Guanguanco sound with 6/8 rhythms such as this tune here. Best rhythm there will ever be.
