@southerndrumming Hey there to you! JR's kit is a Candy Black Burst over Heartwood Curly with Black Nickel hardware. All are maple shells. Specs are below. Have a good one!
8x12, 9x13 - VLT with 3 ply hoops
13x16 - X with 3 ply hoops
14x18 - VLX with 3 ply hoops
18x24 - VLX
6.5x14 - 10 ply with 6 ply hoops(our standard for the Collector's Series)
I don't buy this shit. Just played a tour in Australia with a hired DW kit and couldn't wait to come back home to my Gretsch. I'm no JR, not anywhere as skilled os seasoned, but I do know DW is very good at marketing.
@DrumWorkshopInc i thought i read that John was a "wood" guy i know with his past sig snare he had a birch shell with copper nails in the shell does he really use the DW copper snare?
Amazing drums, guys! You do a fantastic job! I'm a Starclassic Bubinga guy myself mainly for the reason that I do find DW's lacking in tone, the tone bubinga gives you. If you one day use all bubinga shells, like TAMA does, I might switch sides but until that day, I'm sticking to my guns.
I'm after a collectors series, black ice finish with satin chrome hardware,
8" 16" 22" (X shells)
10" 12" (VLT)
(All FAST toms)
Not sure about reinforcement hoops, would you recommend them (how many of your artists use them)? and can you buy dw direct or do you have to go through a shop? can you quote me for these drums?
@rjproud that sounds like a killer kit. I like the size SSC combos. This will be a very versatile kit. I would definitely recommend the reinforcement hoops. They give that focused tonal sound DW's are known for. It's hard to describe sound with words, but I think if you like the trademark DW sound, you should get the hoops. Try a PDP Platinum or DW Performance Series kit. They both use the same wood and construction, but do not have reinforcement hoops.
@rjproud we do not sell direct. You can find the nearest authorized dealer by visiting dwdrums(dot)com and clicking on "Dealer Locator" in the nav bar. The dealer will be able to give you accurate and official pricing. Happy shopping, and thanks for choosing DW :)
JR changed to DW mainly because Yamaha sacked their Artist Relations team in the US. This caused a big stir among Yamaha artists and JR decided to leave.
I've recieved the same feed back regarding the toms when doing sessions. DW has great customer service as well. They really helped me out of a situation involving a 13 pc exotic kit not being exactly to my specs, and totally went above and beyond to make it right. And I'm nobody. Every time I'm on a job, I'm thrilled to hear what the drums are putting out!
@Gunnershaun1380 thanks for your interest in building a DW kit! Unfortunately, Kitbuilder is long overdue for an overhaul (which is currently in progress). Until then (probably October) I suggest you print out the specs and/or take a screen shot and call up your local dealer. The quote feature would basically do just that. Sorry for the hassle...but the new Kitbuilder will be worth the wait ;)
OK. Some of his statements are laughable. BUT, the guys at DW- hands on, in the factory- have an attention to detail that is second to none. ALL of the drums are, in fact, made to order. All of the names he mentioned: Don Lombardi, Chris Lombardi, John Good, Garrison... They ALL want to provide drummers with as many options as possible. With all of these options, the drums can be nothing but custom. I've seen this with my own eyes. Anyone to dispute this, simply doesn't know.
chad smith was makeing fun of dw kits being not custom which is true because if i orded one the shells would be already made and hanging on a shelf but pearl dont make shells till you order them and they more then 2 wood selections
@colinhammond2k7 Gotta clear up this rumor. Chad Smith is a funny guy. I know him personally. I can assure everyone that ALL DW Drums (Collector's, Jazz, Classics) are made to order. There's no way we could stock shells when we offer SSC. It would not be cost effective. Besides Maple, we also offer Birch, Gum, Poplar, Mahogany, and even Bamboo. Of course we have a huge variety of exotic veneers, and we've tried using them as inner plys, and just because it looks good, it doesn't sound it.
@DrumWorkshopInc sorry looks like chad dosnt know whats hes talking about , the reference series by pearl is stupid they say there no one wood kit that sound better,it weird if you have clear head because you see lovely maple but then the floor toms have a dark mahogany
I LOVE DW AND I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY AND THINK. I LIKE DDRUMS, SONOR, BUT I LOVE DW THEY ARE THE BEST. THE SOUND THE LOOKS AND THE HARDWARE I JUST LOVE IT DW FOR EVER
I'm listening to Stomping at the Savoy by Rufus and Chaka Khan with the incredible J.R. Robinson on drums. I was thinking about some of these posts where it seems like J.R. needs to stay with Yamaha. First off, J.R. could play cheap CB700 drums for all I care, this man can make any kit sound great. J.R. Robinson will forever hold reign as one of the best, standard setting, groove masters of all time. His touch, finesse and taste are unmatched.
Yamaha doesn't pay their endorsers either. In fact you are expected to return the equipment when you are done with it. I can tell you, I worked in a music store for 20 years, I've owned an early 80's Tama Superstar kit, a mid 80's Yamaha Recording Custom kit and the PDP CX kit I currently own is the best sounding kit I've ever heard. I tune it too high, it sounds great, I tune it too low, it sounds great. I imagine that a similar DW kit would be great too.
If it were not for Tama being as good as they were, then DW would be the drums I would play. There is not much compition for my drumming. But after Tama, DW comes a very close second.
So you have the folks jumping ship (can't believe he dumped Yamaha, but hey, whatever). That's got to say something I suppose. Is the DW "Custom Shop" kits that different from a kit I could buy at say my local Guitar Center, etc.? Unfortunately the area I live in doesn't have much of a selection of DW (nor much else in the upper end drum selection).
@TheJDog2112 good question. Every DW kit is made to order (custom). The ones at your local GC are just custom ordered by GC, guessing what people want. You can order your own custom kit through any authorized DW Dealer (like GC). That way you can order YOUR custom kit and decide every little detail down to the direction of the grain on each ply of each shell (SSC). Of course, there are size, color, and finish options too. happy shopping!
If you are a decent player.. you can play any kit ...but ....a great skinned and sounding kit bring the fucking player out in you ..for sure!
I am giving DW there new Catchphrase -
" DW - Brings the player out!" "DW - Just add ability " , DW - Find the Player within !" , DW - Release the inner drummer" , Dw - WE made the KIT ..You bring the HIT!"
JR is a fantastic percussionist, and by all accounts I've read, is a gentleman of the cleanest integrity. To me, he was the logical replacement for Jeff Porcaro of Toto, due to his incredible feel, his hi-hat technique, and his song-first approach. There are a lot of hip dudes playing DW. Loved his work with A Bridge 2 Far. Rock on JR.
I had DW's and sold them, I hated them! I think these guys do this to get back in the headlines because they are past they're prime. My kit had no real tone, no attack, I couldn't find a way to tune them well, I personally don't get it.
JR is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Don L. and John Good are some of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. If JR wants to say something you think is dopey, it's fine with me. His career speaks for itself.
I toured DW and they treated me like a VIP. The drums sound amazing: every drum had a perfect sound! I couldn't get over it...
Fair enough...but keep in mind that we didn't feed these endorsers any lines. No one bribed him to come over to DW. We don't pay our endorsers, just give them drums. He's just speaking his mind about his experiences. So it begs the question...why would he be lying? Could it be possible that he's actually this excited about his new drums?
