Landed on Blind Sodus Bay, Wolcott NY. Found it to be a little tricky with a little snow in patches with glare ice otherwise. One wheel goes over snow and slows, the other on glare, goes like heck, wanted to ice loop the aircraft. Brakes are agreeably more of a liability than an asset!
A few weeks prior, abrasive ice surface, excellent way to go !
After the recent write up in AOPA, 4 of us in 2 180's flew out there today (1-17-10) from Williamson, NY, KSDC. Great 2+ hr. flight, had the $200 omelette! Wish we had the same blue skies though, cloud cover was dropping and we barely got out of there. Really nice day trip for something different.
Pretty much exactly the way it looks in this video. Just land slow and short as your brakes are more a liability than an asset...as you probably know. We came in with airspeed pretty much the bottom of the white arc, only used 1/2 the runway, worked fine.
Would love to use this video on my real estate website. I sell waterfront real estate in Alton Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee. I would give you credit of course...

I got to land on this runway over the winter as a student. Was a lot of fun. Approached it like a soft field landing - low, slow and dirty. no brakes! :)
I lived in New Hampshire for 15 years and always wanted to do that. Never got 'round to it. Now I'm motivated for next winter - I'll fly up from New Jersey!
This runway was about 2,500 to 3,000 feet long - and the airplane can land in less than 800 feet on a day like this. So there is plenty of space to allow the airplane to roll to a stop. If you look carefully, you will see that I kept the nose all the way up as long as possible for maximum aero braking.
i like swimming there in the summer : P

thts cool, how long is tht iceway about?

I think it's somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 feet... it's plenty long enough for most light general aviation aircraft.

Yeah. Do it. We have a bunch of Piper's and some Cessna's that go up there every year and have lunch at the restaurant.

.<b>Nice landing, it's all about speed control for successful landings like this :-))

Thanks. The landing was actually a little hot, but there was plenty of runway and we had to roll to the taxiway at the end, anyway.

that is insane! no wheel brakes?! wow you do NOT want to overshoot that landing... hahaha, i'd have to go around like 4 times to get that perfect
