distortion back in those days was a completely natural process that happens when amps are played above full volume. go get a cheap 10 watts, put it on teh clean channel, and turn it up to 10 and you will hear it

The distorted guitar is not credited to Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry played very clean. The distortion is usually credited to Ike Turner ( Rocket 88) and Paul Burilson ( Train Kept a Rollin) Both gor the effect accidentally, as the amps were either damaged, or a tube came loose. Link Wray has a big hit with "Rumble" in the 50s using distorted guitar.
