Yes, John and Robby write all of their own music and John has written/co-written with other artists too (ie. recently David Cook) Trying to compare the classic style and music of Goo to Miley Cyrus is like comparing an expensive wine to Boones Farm.

A Boy Named Goo and Superstar Carwash are awesome as well and rock more. Never listened to any earlier material though. Just think how big of a hit "We Are The Normal" would be if it were released today.

Zac6230: The studio version of the song is actually a little rougher from what the fansite exclusive video showed. The guitars have more of a crunch and the bass is more prominent. Should sound amazing on the disc, though it's still solid live.
This sounds a lot like 19th nervous breakdown by the rolling stones, check it out. Great song though. The 'oh oh' bit reminds of the bit from U2's vertigo.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
However, music absolutely can be judged to some degree objectively.
Some music is better than others.
Its just that not everyone is going to recognize that say superstar car wash and a boy named goo are better albums than LLI.
Goo Goo Dolls are a great great band and i would never slag them. But not all goo goo doll songs are equal.
Example. The song Name is without question better than anything on LLI.
